Fill bottle with warm tap water to

about 38C (comfortably warm on


the wrists).
While sitting on the toilet, position
the nozzle between your legs so that
squirts of water reach the perineum
(area between vagina and anus).

The postpartum period begins after the


birth of the newborn until the return of the
mothers reproductive organs to the prepregnant state. During this period, pain
and discomfort can be due to:
Vaginal lacerations / tears
Episiotomy surgical cut between
vagina and the anus to enlarge
vaginal opening for delivery
Hemorrhoids

any medications or solutions

Here are some tips to relieve theses


postpartum pain & discomfort associated
with lacerations, episiotomy, and/or
hemorrhoids.

Ice Packs

Apply a covered ice pack to


perineum from front to back
First 24 hours after birth: decreases
inflammation and increases comfort
After first 24 hours: provides pain
relief effect

Clamp tubing, fill bag with warm


water, and hang bag (should be
hung at a level higher than toilet
seat
Raise toilet seat and place basin
above toilet bowl with overflow
opening directed towards back of
toilet
Attach tube into groove at front of
bath
Holes near the end of the tube
should be facing upward to allow for
squirting of water onto perineum
Add warm water to basin

Loosen tube clamp to regulate rate
of flow and to add warm water as
the water in basin cools
Use at least twice a day for 20
minutes
