The final (30%) =

presentation (5%) +
answer (two) questions (5% x 2)
+ design (one) question (5%) +
essay (5%) +
peer-review (5%)

Regulations I
!

The students will be put in 11 groups:

12 min presentation + 3 min Q&A

The presentation will be stopped if it takes longer than 12 min.

No one is allowed to interrupt the speaker during the presentation

2 questions will be raised after presentation. 1.5 min will be

allocated for answering each of them. If it takes longer than 1.5
min, the answerer will be stopped.

The first question will be raised by the TA. The second question
will be raised by students from one of the other groups.

Regulations II
Assume group B designs questions for group A and group C designs
questions for group B, how to grade the presentation of group B?
slides and presentation (5%) + Q&A (5% X 2; if group B answer the
questions designed by the TA and group C correctly) + Q&A (5%; if
group A fails to answer the questions designed by group B)
! All slides and essays need to be submitted no later than 11:59pm,
Dec 11. A submission after that will lead to a loss of 5% X # of days
! The slides and essays are accessible to everybody. All designed
questions (including answers) must be based on the slides and the
essays, and be submitted no later than 11:59pm Dec 16.
! If the designed question is not qualified (e.g., irrelevant to or not
based on the essay or the slides; or can not be finished within one and
half minutes), the group will be required to resubmit a new question
and its answer ( + 2% loss) no later than 11:59pm Dec 17; if the
3
resubmission is still not qualified, then you will lose all 5% of the
question design. The TA will design the question instead.
!

Regulations III
The essay should be written in latex and in the format of APS journal
(template will be provided)

The essay should contain all necessary elements in an article: title,

authors, affiliations, abstract, main context, references, etc.

The length of the essay should be two and only two pages (including
references).

The topics of the essay and the presentation for each group should
be the same.

The same scores will be given to the members from the same group
(presentation + essay). So collaboration is very important

The peer-review scheme will be introduced.

Grading your teammates performance (5%) during the preparation

for the final, and send the score to the instructor by email no later 4
than 11:59pm, Dec 18. Late submission will yield 2% loss in your score.

More Comments
On each topic, you may find a huge number of papers. The suggestion
is:try to catch a global picture on your topic first and then focus on
one or several specific cases, in your presentation and essay.

As a reminder, it is important to write your essay in the format of

latex (i.e., using the template that I send to you)and thencompile it
to a pdf file. We need to beprofessional in writing after taking this
course.

Both the slides and the essay should be pdf files. If you write the
slides using ppt, you need to convert them to a pdf file before your
submission
