Assignment #3: Digital Citizenship E-Portfolio

Value: 30%

What is the Purpose of this Assignment?

The purpose of this assignment is for you to create an E-Portfolio that demonstrates your
mastery of the nine elements of digital citizenship. This assignment will provide you with an
opportunity to collect and select meaningful artifacts that provide evidence of your learning,
reflect on learning that has resulted from these experiences, and present this information in an
organized and meaningful way.

What is an E-Portfolio?

In general, an E-Portfolio can be defined as an electronic collection of evidence that is gathered

together to document a person's learning journey over time (Butler, 2006). E-Portfolios are
designed to showcase progress toward and achievement of specific institution, program, course,
or professional competencies. In the case of this course, you will be using your E-Portfolio to
demonstrate mastery of the nine elements of digital citizenship.

What are the components of an E-Portfolio?

E-Portfolios typically include two main elements: artifacts and reflections (Lorenzo and Ittelson,
2005). Artifacts are the pieces of evidence that are used to demonstrate mastery of the specific
competencies. The artifacts in your E-Portfolio can be from your academic, personal, or
professional experience, and may include, but are not limited to: assignments, certificates,
presentations, blogs, web pages, journal entries, summary of work experience, summary of
educational experience, photos or videos of skill demonstrations, feedback from peers, faculty,
or employers, etc. Artifacts can be produced in a number of formats including audio, video,
graphics, and text. If you want to use an artifact that is less tangible; for example, your work
experience, you can document the experience in a summary table, journal, story, photograph,
slideshow, or film.

Each artifact in an E-Portfolio is accompanied by a reflection which describes the artifact,

explains how it demonstrates mastery of the competency, and describes learning goals for the
future. For this assignment, the artifacts that you choose to include in your E-Portfolio will link
to the nine elements of digital citizenship and will demonstrate that you have knowledge, skills
and attitudes related to each element.

What does the E-Portfolio for this assignment need to include?

For the purpose of this assignment, you will provide one artifact for each element of digital
citizenship that demonstrates your progress in achieving this element. Your artifacts can
include any piece of evidence from your academic, personal, or professional experience that
showcases how you are developing each element of digital citizenship. You can include existing

artifacts that you have produced, or you can also create your own customized artifacts to
document an important event or experience that you do not already have an artifact for. For
example, you could create a summary of your experience in a group activity, volunteer work, or
participation in an event. You should only include artifacts in your E-Portfolio that you have
created or developed. If you are including artifacts that were created by multiple people, then
you need to give appropriate credit.

For each artifact you will write a 250-300 word reflection which summarizes the artifact and
explains how it provides evidence of meeting the digital citizenship element. Each reflection
should include the following:

• Identification of Digital Citizenship Element - Identify the digital citizenship element

you are you reflecting on
• Self-Assessment – Explain at what level you have achieved the digital citizenship
element. For example, is it “emerging, "in development”, or are you “competent,”
• Description – Provide a brief explanation of the artifact (where, when, why, with whom,
and under what circumstances the artifact was produced)?
• Rationale – Explain why you chose the artifact as evidence of the digital citizenship
element and how it demonstrates your knowledge, skills and attitudes related to the
digital citizenship element.
