Anthony McGill's list of credentials is exhaustive. In addition to holding


positions of principal clarinet with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra
and the Cincinnati Symphony, he has been a sought after chamber
musician performing at the Marlboro, Tanglewood, Mainly Mozart,
Music@Menlo and Santa Fe Chamber Music festivals.
In January, 2009 he was a guest performer at the inauguration of
President Barack Obama.
Mr. McGill is currently on the faculties of the Juilliard School, the
Peabody Institute, Bard College Conservatory of Music, Manhattan
School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
McGill is a much sought after teacher and has given master classes
throughout the United States, Europe and South Africa. It is with great
pleasure that we now welcome him to Canada.

New York Philharmonic Orchestra as our
guest artist and Masterclass instructor.
The Masterclasses will take place this
afternoon in Walter Hall and all are invited
to attend this exciting and informative
event.

presented this morning as well as the Clarinet Marketplace in the
lobby of Walter Hall.
On behalf of the clarinet faculty of the University of Toronto, I would
like to extend a warm welcome to you on
Clarinet Day, 2016. We have put together
what we think will be a day of interest and
enjoyment to all those who play the
clarinet. In addition to various
presentations by our faculty members we
are very pleased to have displays of
Toronto's leading retailers, manufacturers,
and distributors of clarinets and related
accessories. We are also pleased to have
representation from various local
ensembles, which make up a crucial part of our growing musical
community.
As well, I would like to thank the Faculty of Music for the use of the
facilities which have been graciously provided to us today. Without the
generous donation of spaces, equipment, and support staff, Clarinet
Day would not be possible. Thank you.

Finding the Perfect Reed

Its All About Line

How to break in, scrape, give reeds longevity and always have reeds
that play in dry and humid climates.

The Art of the Bass Clarinet

The only thing that the bass clarinet


and the clarinet have in common are
some (not all) ngerings. Embouchure
and air are two things that are not
common to both instruments. If you can
play the clarinet, it is remarkably easy to
play the bass clarinet very well. Find
out how.
David Bourque played in the Toronto
Symphony Orchestra from 1983 to 2011. He has held academic
appointments at Indiana University, Mount Alison University and the
University of Prince Edward Island and has taught classes at major
U.S. music schools, including Eastman, De Paul and Northwestern.
David has taught at the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and has
coached the wind section of the New World Symphony, one of the
premiere pre-professional orchestras in the world.
Mr. Bourques work in sound and lm recording is extensive including
TV (Road to Avonlea), feature lms (Moonstruck), chamber music
recordings (Festival Winds), orchestral recordings (Toronto
Symphony) and hundreds of TV and radio jingles.
Davids published works include rst editions of Harmoniemusik
attributed to Mozart and he is the author of the popular DVD tutorial
entitled Working The Single Reed. He is currently writing The Bass
Clarinettists Workbook: Annotated Symphonic Excerpts for Bass
Clarinet and has been a regular contributor to The Clarinet, the
Journal of the International Clarinet Association.
Born and raised in Toronto, David is a graduate of the University of
Toronto, Faculty of Music. He can be reached through his website

Ill undertake a step by step practice session on unaccompanied


repertoire as I refer to Rose 40 studies #1-10. These are my go to
etudes for assimilating the techniques I use in professional practice.

Max Christie is the Principal


Clarinet of the National Ballet
Orchestra in Toronto where he
is also a member of the new
music collective Continuum; he
also performs frequently with
New Music Concerts both as
soloist and as an ensemble
member. He is often heard on
CBC Radio's " Two New
Hours", and has recorded the
music of Michael Torke,
Rudolph Komorous, Melissa Hui, Harry Somers, R. Murray Schafer,
and MC Maguire. Mr. Christie has performed across North America
and Europe, and has appeared as a soloist with the Toronto
Symphony, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, the Calgary
Philharmonic and the Esprit Orchestra.

The Legato/Staccato Connection
Clarinetists are encouraged to come ready with a Rose Etude or
a solo that can be used as a means to work with articulation and
legato.
Joseph has been a member of
t h e To r o n t o S y m p h o n y
Orchestra as second clarinet
since 1988. Joseph has acted
as Principal clarinetist with the
Canadian Opera Company on
several operas between
seasons from 2000-2003.
During the years 1998 and
2000, Joseph was the Associate
Principal Clarinetist with the
Montreal Symphony Orchestra.
His previous positions include
t h e Va n c o u v e r S y m p h o n y
Orchestra and the National Ballet
Orchestra.
Joseph is active in chamber music throughout Ontario. His
performances include the Festival of the Sound,the Ottawa Chamber
Festival, the McGill University Chamber Series and solo recitals in
northern Ontario.
He teaches at the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of
Music. Joseph is also a Certied Personal Trainer, focusing on injury
prevention and strengthening for professional musicians.

How to Ace your Entrance Audition
"Tips and inside information on how to prepare for a university
entrance audition, and what to expect in the audition room.
Topics will include researching schools, investigating teachers,
choosing repertoire, nding a pianist, and preparing for all the
components of the audition and interview."

Chamber Music and Performance
Studies at the Faculty of Music,
University of Toronto, Peter Stoll
is known for his virtuoso energy
onstage, as well as an easy and
entertaining way of speaking with
the audience. He rose to
prominence as solo clarinetist
with the Jeunesse Musicales
World Orchestra, performing in
Vienna and East and West Berlin,
during the period of the Iron Curtain. A prize-winner of numerous
music competitions, he now teaches at the Faculty of Music,
University of Toronto, and is a member of the College of Examiners of
the Royal Conservatory of Music. Performing frequently in Toronto
with many different orchestral and chamber ensembles, hes a
member of the vibrant Talisker Players. Peter's ensemble, the Trio
dArgento recently recorded an album with members of the Canadian
Brass. He has performed around the world with ensembles such as
Ergo and Continuum and gave a premiere performance of Canadian
composer John Hawkins' concerto in Saratov, Russia, where he was
also asked to give a master class at the State Conservatory.

Walter Hall- Richard Thomson


The Art of Doubling

A demonstration of the different playing characteristics of the various


members of the clarinet family, including the Eb, C,Bb, Basset Horn,
and Bass Clarinet, as well as a discussion about the advantages and
challenges in learning to play each one.
A native of Saint John, New
Brunswick, Richard Thomson has
been an active freelance performer in
the Toronto area for 30 years. He has
performed with the Canadian Opera
Company, The National Ballet of
Canada, Toronto Operetta Theatre,
Canadian Stage Company, Toronto
Symphony, Hamilton Philharmonic and
Toronto's Talisker Players, and has
toured with the Charlottetown Festival Theatre Company, Canada's
Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and the Broadway productions of The Secret
Garden and Beauty and the Beast. Mr. Thomson has recorded with
Glenn Gould, Henry Mancini and Placido Domingo, and played over
50 musicals for Mirvish, Livent, and the Shaw and Stratford Festivals.
He is a founding member of the King's Square Saxophone Quartet, a
member of Toronto's Esprit Orchestra, and is on the clarinet faculty of
the University of Toronto. Other teaching credits include The Royal
Conservatory of Music as well as summer camps at Mount Allison
University and New England Music Camp. In addition, he adjudicates
festivals and conducts wind instrument clinics and master classes in
the greater Toronto area. He is a member of The Society for Music
Perception and Cognition, which researches music and language
processing in the brain.

Ellen Meyer - Masterclass Pianist


Ellen Meyer is one of Ontarios most in-demand collaborative pianists.
Possessing a large and varied repertoire, she has performed as a
soloist and chamber musician throughout North America and Europe.
Ellen has performed with notable artists such as Ricardo Morales,
Julian Bliss, Peter Sheridan, David Hetherington and Peter Stoll.
She has also collaborated with participants in masterclasses
conducted by Karl Leister, Sabine
M e y e r, J a m e s C a m p b e l l a n d
Christopher Millard, among many
others.
She can been heard on more than 15
CDs with the Riverdale Ensemble,
Cantores Celestes Womens Choir,
and Mit Ausdruck with Ossia on
historical keyboard.
Ellen has recorded for feature lm
and documentaries and has been
broadcast on CBC, CTV, MuchMusic,
Bravo, TVO and WNED.
