1 SOME INTERESTING STORIES ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE TEXTILE

INDUSTRY

In

the 18th century the production of

textiles was the most important industry in
Britain. Most of the work was carried out in
the home and was often combined with
farming. There were three main stages to
making cloth: carding, spinning and
weaving. Most cloth was made from either
wool or cotton, but other materials such as
silk
and
flax
were
also
used.

Photograph of weaver and spinner in Wales.

The woven cloth was sold to merchants

called clothiers who visited the villages.
Some of the cloth was made into clothes for
people living in the country. However, a
large amount of cloth was exported.

2 JAMES HARGREAVES
was a weaver living in the village of Stanhill
in Lancashire. One day his daughter Jenny,
accidentally knocked over the family spinning
wheel. The spindle continued to revolve and
it gave Hargreaves the idea that a whole line
of spindles could be worked off one wheel.

The Spinning Jenny (1835)

In 1764 Hargreaves built the Spinning-Jenny.

By turning a single wheel, the operator could
now spin eight threads at once. Later, the
number was increased to eighty. The thread
that the machine produced was coarse and
not very strong.
Hargreaves did not apply for a patent for his
Spinning Jenny until 1770 and so others
copied his ideas without paying him any
money. By the time James Hargreaves died
in 1778, over 20,000 Spinning-Jenny
machines were being used in Britain.

The _________ len Industry in the Middle Ages used home-grown _________. Leeds in
Yorkshire became the market centre where the cloth was exchanged and finished. After the
invention of the Spinning Jenny some cloth merchants became factory owners. Several were
opened in the Leeds area but by 1803 only one piece of cloth in sixteen was made in a factory.
Power-loom weaving was introduced in the 1820s. By 1860s steam power was more
important than water.

The _________ fibre was first made into cloth in Ancient China.

9 THE WINTER 2002 ISSUE OF KNITTING NOW

The Shoestring Jacket, so called because it is laced

rather than sewn together, features deep turnedback cuffs, in-seam pockets and a collar shaped by

The Tam for our favorite doll completes her new

outfit perfectly.

Donna Kay has designed a dynamic duo; a

10 INNOVATING SHOE MANUFACTURING

This is an innovative plant for the production of customized shoes. This plant is located at the
ITIA-CNR laboratory in Vigevano (Italy) and is the pilot plant of a large European research
project called EUROShoe, which began in March 2001 and is planned to finish in June 2004.

The Innovative Shoe Manufacturing

Plant of the ITIA-CNR laboratory of
Vigevano (Italy).
EUROShoe is a complex project with thirty-five academic and industrial partners from ten
different European countries. It aims at a dramatic renovation of the concept of shoes as
products and of their production, based on a transformation from mass-produced to masscustomised goods. This product evolution goes in parallel with a transformation of footwear
companies into flexible enterprises which can handle such a radical change and the
technological challenges. This is a complete revision not only of the manufacturing process
but also of the tools used to analyse the innovative industrial system.

11 SHOE MANUFACTURING
Over Here, Over There
Not all manufacturing jobs are moving overseas.
In early 2004, Howard Shaffer began manufacturing
mens and womens custom shoes in Pompano Beach.
At Otabo Custom Fit Shoes, he employs 30 workers
making an average of $13 an hour at a high-tech
factory. Shaffer hopes to expand his workforce to 100
within a year.
Is Shaffer nave to think that a small Florida shoe manufacturing company can work? On the
contrary, he is probably savvier than most about shoes, manufacturing and competition from
the worlds largest shoe manufacturing center China.
For more than two decades, Shaffer lived in China and ran the operations for Nike and later
his own $80-million shoe business. When he decided to quit his globetrotting and return to
the U.S., in large part so that his kids could go to U.S. schools, Shaffer set up an
experimental factory in Florida that used robotics. He tried to compete with China in the basic
shoe business. He failed. Its hard to compete with 30 cents an hour, says Shaffer
So he decided to focus on a very specific niche and has found that we can provide a service
that China cant provide, the design and manufacture of custom shoes that are available to
the customer within two weeks.

13 THE FURRIER BUSINESS OF CARL F. SMITH

A recognized expert in making, mending and restyling fur coats, Carl F. Smith first learned
his trade at the age of 18 in the year 1919 at The Meng and Shafer Co. (see advertisement
at left), 182-186 Main St. East in Rochester, NY. In 1924, Mr. Smith opened his own custom
fur shop at 66 Clinton Avenue South in Rochester, NY. The fur shop was on the second
floor. The showroom was nicely furnished in the style of the time with black and chrome
upholstered chairs and a display of several finished coats.
Four women were employed as finishers, placing the lining in the coats, and two men were
hired to cut pelts. Carls wife, Marjorie, also spent long hours at the store styling coats.
Typically, hundreds of pelts were required to make one coat. Mr. Smith continued his
business at that location until 1941, when he moved it to his home at 1156 Culver
Road. Also, in 1956, Mr. Smith became the manager of the fur salon at Harry Levin Co. at
One Clinton Avenue South, Rochester, NY. In later years, the furrier business was operated
entirely from Mr. Smiths home until his retirement in 1972.

15 FOUR PAGES FROM A PATTERN BOOK, CIRCA 1641 KISSZEBEN,

HUNGARY
Part 1
I have a friend who is obsessed with Hungarian clothing of the 16th century. She herself is a
descendant of Hungarian Royalty and has quite a collection of specifically Hungarian things.
One day, while I was visiting, she showed me a little book she had picked up for a few
dollars. She was excited by the pictures (all black and white) of actual Hungarian clothing.
She turned to the front of the book and showed me the very first photo. It was of four pages
of patterns for coats.
The book itself is titled "Historic Hungarian Costumes" by Joseph Hollrigl and published by
the Officina Budapest 1939. The book was compiled from the material of the 1938 exhibition
of Hungarian historic costumes arranged by the Arts and Craft Museum. The four pattern
pages, according to the author, came from a pattern book containing eleven pages in
watercolor, bound in leather, of the year 1641, from Kisszeben, kept at present in the Arts
and Crafts Museum. The form of the jacket and of the dolman are already somewhat
modified; however, it clearly shows that the sleeves have not been cut separately from the
shoulders as in the present cloaks but they are cut from one single piece of cloth in a way
that the only seam is at the lower part of the sleeves continuing on both sides of the jacket, i.
e. when spread out the shoulders and the upper hem of the sleeves form a straight line.

16 DESIGN TIPS
Some advice on creating gorgeous dress
designs...

Bear in mind the dress will be on a body! If the design is for a particular person, think about
their shape. Doing so can result in a dress design that will be extremely flattering to their
figure. A design where the bodice and skirt designs come up to a point at the waist, using a
darker colour on the sides of the dress with a light or reflective colour down the centre, and
using central sleeve designs are all slimming. Filling the full width of the skirt at the top will
make the dress appear wider, as will all over sleeve designs, or horizontal lines. A border
around the bottom of the skirt will help a tall person play down their height if they wish, while
vertical lines will make a petite person appear taller by drawing the eye up and down the full
length of the dress.
Don't copy another dress. For a start, it's copyright theft. A design is copyright to the designer
the second it goes down on paper. You may see a gorgeous dress that you really love, but
using the design is illegal without the designers permission and paying any applicable fees.
And don't think that changing the colours or a few shapes is enough to get away with it. If you
have started with someone elses design as a base and changed it a bit, it's still a copy.

17 FABRIC GLOSSARY
PART 1

Silk, Silk Dupion, Silk Shantung - Silk is made from the threads spun into cocoons by silk
worms. The cocoons are unwound and the very fine filament wound onto a spool. Several of
these filaments are combined to make one thread which is then used to weave silk fabrics.
Dupion is made from irregular threads and as such often has a slightly bumpy texture. It has
a lovely shine and is available in many bright vibrant colours, as well as two-tone colours. It
is very popular to use as the base of dresses, as well as linings, due to the vast number of
rich colours you can get it in.
Metallic Silk - Metallic Silk is made by combining a metallic warp with a silk weft. The
finished effect is a very shiny smooth metallic fabric. It is very popular as a base fabric as it
gives a lovely shine on stage, without too much glitz, and is generally easy to work with. It is
wise to preshrink the fabric with a steam iron before use. The fabric is available in a wide
range of colours from silver and gold, through pastels and into rich jewel tones. Two
tone/shot metallic silks are also available where the metallic is a different colour or shade to
the silk.

Part 2
Velvet - The fabric of choice in the past, velvet can be heavy and hot, but the colours are
rich. Cotton velvet used to be very popular, however silk and synthetic velvets are now
available which are much lighter. Glittery varieties can also be bought.
Gabardine - A popular choice for both menswear and ladies clothing. It is available in a
wide range of colours including white, black, dark colours (burgundy, dark greens) and
neons. The fabric is dull with no shine, and the weave produces a texture of diagonal lines. It
wears well hence it's being popular for office dresses.
Satin - A soft, drapey fabric with a shine. The most commonly available (and the most
reasonably priced) are synthetic. Some of the readily available satins can be cheap quality very flimsy with little body. Purchasing a better quality slightly thicker satin is worthwhile.
Satins can be hot if used as a base fabric, particularly bridal/Duchesse satin. Good for
applique and linings.

Part 3
Lycra - A thick and very stretchy jersey fabric which is very popular for use in costumes, e.g.
for various forms of dance. It is available in many plain colours, ranging from the basics
through to vibrant neons. Many varieties of holographic and patterned lycras are also
available, and are becoming very popular for applique. They can also be used as a base for
a dress, or for lining, but they can be quite heavy (this can lead to "sagging" if used for a
lining). As the fabric is very stretchy it must be stabilised.
Pearl Organza - Highly popular at the moment, this fabric is sheer and has a pearlised
effect. It is most readily available in white, pink, lilac and blue, although various suppliers also
have it in orange and other shades. To be used as the base of a dress it must be overlayed
onto a fabric such as satin. Also suitable for linings, and lovely as an appliqu.
Other Organzas - Many other organzas are available. Twinkle or crystal organza is
commonly used in bridal and evening wear and has a subtle shimmer (it is not glittery). This
is due to the bibres being textured to reflect light. Others are available with flocked & glittery
designs, embroidery, and even sequins and diamantes. As with all other organzas they
require backing in a matching satin or similar due to their being see through.

18 LEARNING DRESSMAKING

When you are starting to learn dressmaking, you will need to find the simplest pattern you
can find. McCall's and Simplicity have several beginner patterns. After you become a novice
sewer, you can then purchase the more detailed patterns. Patterns come in a variety of sizes
and styles, so you will be sure to find one that has the right fit for your shape and style of
clothing.
Notions always needed for a woman's dress are a zipper, thread, buttons, eyehooks,
hemming tape, stick pins, tracing paper that comes in colours, tracing wheel, chalk and
sometimes interfacing and lining if the dress is very sheer or very flimsy. The pattern will tell
you if it recommends lining and interfacing.

20 APPAREL WORKERS
Part 1

Apparel workers cut fabric and other materials and sew it into clothing and related products.
Workers in a variety of occupations fall under the heading of apparel workers. Tailors,
dressmakers, and sewers make custom clothing and alter and repair garments for
individuals. However, workers in most apparel occupations are found in manufacturing,
performing specialized tasks in the production of large numbers of garments that are shipped
to retail establishments for sale to the public.
Fabric and apparel patternmakers convert a clothing designers original model of a garment
into a pattern of separate parts that can be laid out on a length of fabric. After discussing the
item with the designer, these skilled workers usually use a computer to outline the parts and
draw in details to indicate the positions of pleats, buttonholes, and other features. (In the
past, patternmakers laid out the parts on paper, using pencils and drafting instruments such
as rulers.) Patternmakers then alter the size of the pieces in the pattern to produce garments
of various sizes, and they may mark the fabric to show the best layout of pattern pieces to
minimize waste of material.

Part 2

Once an items pattern has been made and marked, mass production of the garment begins.
Cutters and trimmers take the patterns and cut out material, paying close attention to their
work because mistakes are costly. Following the outline of the pattern, they place multiple
layers of material on the cutting table and use an electric knife or other cutting tools to cut out
the various pieces of the garment; delicate materials may be cut by hand. In some
companies, computer-controlled machines do the cutting.
Sewing machine operators join the parts of a garment together, reinforce seams, and attach
buttons, hooks, zippers, and accessories to produce clothing. After the product is sewn, other
workers remove loose threads and inspect and package the garments.

21 SHOE AND LEATHER WORKERS

Shoe and leather workers are employed either in

manufacturing

or

in

personal

services.

In

shoe

manufacturing, shoe machine operators and tenders

operate a variety of specialized machines that perform
cutting, joining, and finishing functions. In personal
services, shoe and leather workers and repairers

perform a variety of repairs and custom leatherwork for members of the general public. They
construct, decorate, or repair shoes, belts, purses, saddles, luggage, and other leather
products. They also may repair some products made of canvas or plastic. When making
custom shoes or modifying existing footwear for people with foot problems or special needs,
shoe and leather workers and repairers cut pieces of leather, shape them over a form
shaped like a foot, and sew them together. They then attach soles and heels, using sewing
machines or cement and nails. They also dye and polish the items, utilizing a buffing wheel
for a smooth surface and lustrous shine. When making luggage, they fasten leather to a
frame and attach handles and other hardware. They also cut and secure linings inside the
frames and sew or stamp designs onto the exterior of the luggage. In addition to performing
all of the preceding steps, saddle makers often apply leather dyes and liquid topcoats to
produce a glossy finish on a saddle. They also may decorate the surface of the saddle by
hand stitching or by stamping the leather with decorative patterns and designs. Shoe and
leather workers and repairers who own their own shops keep records and supervise other
workers.

22 UPHOLSTERERS
Upholsterers make, fix, and restore furniture that is
covered with fabric. Using hammers and tack pullers
upholsterers who restore furniture remove old fabric
and stuffing to get back down to the springs and
wooden frame. Then they reglue loose sections of the
frame and refinish exposed wood. The springs sit on a
cloth mat, called webbing, that is attached to the frame.
Upholsterers replace torn webbing, examine the
springs, and replace broken or bent ones.
Upholsterers who make new furniture start with a bare wooden frame. First, they install
webbing, tacking it to one side of the frame, stretching it tight, and tacking it to the other side.
Then, they tie each spring to the webbing and to its neighboring springs. Next, they cover the
springs with filler, such as foam, a polyester batt, or similar fibrous batting material, to form a
smooth, rounded surface. Then they measure and cut fabric for the arms, backs, seats,
sides, and other surfaces, leaving as little waste as possible. Finally, sewing the fabric pieces
together and attaching them to the frame with tacks, staples, or glue, they affix any
ornaments, such as fringes, buttons, or rivets. Sometimes, upholsterers pick up and deliver
the furniture they work on. They also help customers pick new coverings by providing
samples of fabrics and pictures of finished pieces.

23 SHOEMAKING

Shoemaking is a traditional career/craft, mostly superseded by industrial manufacture of

footwear. Footwear created by individual craftsmen have included boots, sandals, clogs,
moccasins, and shoes. Typically they are made of leather, wood or other plant material, and
often consist of multiple parts for better durability of the sole, stitched to a leather upper.
Typically a shoemaker uses a last to form the shoe on. Traditionally it has been made of
either iron or wood, and can be straight, or used exclusively for left or right shoes.
The profession of shoemaking has had its own stories (Shoemaker's elves), patron saint
(Saint Crispin), and proverbs ("The shoemaker's children are often shoeless").
Some types of ancient and traditionally-made shoes:

Romans fighting in northern Europe: furs wrapped around feet, and sandals wrapped
over them

Clogs: wooden shoes, often filled with straw to warm the feet

Mocassins: simple shoes, often without the durability of joined shoes (although
different types of leather have different wear characteristics)

24 LEATHERCRAFT
Hugo Bosca Leather Accessories
Hugo Bosca was founded in Springfield, Ohio, in 1911 by the Bosca family. With strong
connections in the Italian leather trade, they import quality leather and leathergoods, as well
as manufacture items themselves to the highest European standards. Hugo Bosca is a
family-owned and run company with a reputation built on the quality of their products.
Old Leather
The leather used in most of the items we offer from Bosca is their oak tanned Old Leather -Bosca's finest bovine leather. Oak tanning requires a lengthy process, more costly than the
chemical tanning commonly used today. Oak tanning shrinks the leather, giving a tighter
more dense structure, which stands up to wear better. Cowhides are hand-stained in Italy
and brought to a fine finish to display the subtle variations in grain and color of the Old
Leather. The shine of the Old Leather is developed through polishing the leather itself, rather
than by applying an artificial top coat, and over time matures to a mellow matte finish.
