Reflections on Learning

Reflection

August 30, 2016 (Tuesday)

During the mock trial I learned how to create

claims and support said claims with valid
evidence. I was part of the jury. This taught me
how to compare evidence and choose the
strongest one. My work from before I was chosen
as a jury member was also used during the trial
for the prosecution of George. This assessment
also made me realize that how you speak and
word your sentences affects the how the claim is
received.

September 1, 2016 (Thursday)

While preparing the outline for the timed write, I

learned how to form a strong thesis, find
supporting claims, find valid evidence
corresponding with the claims. I also learned how
to find opposing claims against my thesis and
prove them wrong. While typing the timed write, I
learned how to supress my anxiety and type
quickly under stressful situations.

September 2, 2016 (Friday)

During the lesson on Weeds and Roses, the class

learned how to peer edit. The class also learned
how to write proper introductory paragraphs and
citations. The class also learned how to lead into
the quotes instead of instantly writing one that is
unexplained. This was a simple lesson. In
objective summaries you need sentences to
discuss WHO, WHAT, and WHY. In those
sentences you avoid the use of vague comments
and the use of, In this essay, we will. The reader
doesnt need to be reminded that they are reading
an essay, that is obvious.

September 6, 2016 (Tuesday)

During this lesson, the class started Unit 2. At the

beginning of class, the standards got
deconstructed. The reading standard was to
analyze the authors choices of how to put
together a text to create effects. The speaking/
listening standard was to come to discussions
ready and refer to evidence from a text to create a
good idea exchange. The class also learned C-PA-R-I-S (Connection, prediction, ask, reflect,
infer, summarize).

September 8, 2016 (Thursday)

The class began searching books for their SRC

lists. The recommended points for all the books

was 150 because some books would lose the

interest of their readers, so it would be good to
have a backup. The class also began reading CoA
and started annotating the text. The class also
went over Edgar Allan Poes life story and went
over the definitions of the 1.2 VA list.
September 9, 2016 (Friday)

Today we wrote a summary of the CoA story. We

then were to write 2 T-E-A-S paragraphs about
how Poe uses foreshadowing to build suspense in
the story. The groups then edited their classmates
paragraphs on google docs.I am proud of my
ability to edit ones paragraph easily and neatly,
and also of being able to write the paragraphs.

September 12, 2016 (Monday)

Today in class we started a group project on

which mental disorder montresor from CoA has. I
think its sociopathy because he is manipulative,
able to lie to achieve his goals, and holds no
remorse for his actions. I am the researcher for
this project. I am proud of the work I have done
today because I was the one who first found
sociopath.

September 13, 2016 (Tuesday)

The class continued to work on the Montresor

Diagnosis project. I started writing the three
diagnosis paragraphs. I am proud that I was able
to find valid evidence on the internet to support
the symptoms and idea that he was a sociopath.

September 15, 2016 (Thursday)

The class began silent reading for the first twentyfive minutes of class. Then, each table group had
ten minutes to work on the Diagnosis For
Montresor project. After the leaders and editors
of each group presented the project while the rest
of the group was theaudience for others. I am
proud of my ability to be a good audience.

September 19, 2016 (Monday)

The class did VA 1.2 and then discussed how the

human species hasnt fully accepted differences
among people, but some individual groups such as
the U.S have begun to. Then we began the story
and also begun annotating it. I learned that the
human race still has a long way to go to reach true
equality. I am proud that realized this. This class
really made me think of how horrible people are
to the people different to them.

September 20, 2016 (Tuesday)

In class we explained the story that we read for

homework. I realized that it focused on all the
negatives, but it is a honest opinion with some

truth. We then all were instructed to write a T-EA-S paragraph about why America is an
improbable idea. I am proud that my quick write
was nearly perfect according to the T-E-A-S
format, and that I am improving my peer editing
skills.
September 22, 2016 (Thursday)

Today during class we talked about reading

comprehension in the story we read. I learned a
lot once we had a class discussion about the text
and that America, although being very diverse,
has remained as one when other countries would
split. We then did a pop quiz then started the
Close Reader book. The new story is about how
religion brings people together. I am proud of my
growing reading comprehension skills.

September 23, 2016 (Friday)

Today the class held discussions on if Patels view

of America was right or wrong. I was the group
leader for the first discussion. We discussed why
Patel used Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.
as examples. I learned that he used those two
historical figures to show that we should let go of
the past and focus on the future. In the next
discussion we discussed Patels theory of whether
culture brought America together and whether
America truly values culture. We agreed that this
wasnt true. Even when America is united against
a common enemy, the ethnicity in which the
group is in is discriminated against. This makes
me think differently about the notion at which
America was built on, because everyone thinks
one group is inferior to their own.

September 26, 2016 (Monday)

I thought that the story OUAT was a very

insightful story. It taught me that if you only think
about protecting yourself rather than others, your
attempts will not only hurt the enemy but what
you hold most dear. This was also a very sarcastic
story, using happily ever after a lot. Even
though the ending was dark, it was very true in
regards of what happens when you set up social
levels and only care for yourself.

September 27, 2016 (Tuesday)

Today there was a sub. In class we first

summarized the story OUAT. After, we answered
the questions after the story. OUATs theme is that
if divisions between people become too strong,
then everyones freedom and safety will become
limited. Then we started a narrative with a partner

that is about real life problems but influenced by a

fairy-tale.
September 28, 2016 (Thursday)

Today in class we continued our narrative. My

groups is about bullying. Next we discussed our
speech that we have to do as the end-of-unit
project. We then split into groups. One speech for
each group. We then came up with our speechs
thesis statement. Ours was, America cant act as
one unless segregation stops.

September 30, 2016 (Friday)

Today we did the verbal advantage test. Then we

read our narrative stories to each other. Finally we
discussed the main parts of a speech: introduction,
counterarguments, conclusion. We discussed what
needs to be in that section.

October 4, 2016 (Tuesday)

In class we chose who writes which part of the

speech. I chose the conclusion. The
arguments/claims my group came up with were
segregation of race, gender, and religion.

October 5, 2016 (Thursday)

The class revised their speeches today. The speech

has a limit of being at most four minutes. After,
all the groups paired up with another group and
practiced our speeches with them. My group is the
first to present so we get extra credit. I learned
that I need to have more eye-contact with my
audience.

October 6, 2016 (Friday)

Today the class started presenting their speeches.

My group was the first to present their speech in
the class. I feel that I did well. I spoke clearly and
without filler words, used hand gestures to engage
the audience, and had a strong wow moment at
the end of my part (the conclusion). However, I
did not get to finish my part of the speech because
of some timing issues within the group I still feel
that I created a strong conclusion for my group. I
feel that my public speaking has improved.

October 9, 2016 (Monday)

The class finished the presentations. After, the

class started the reflections for Quarter 1. We had
to state the grade we think we deserve and give
detailed reasons for why we deserve it. I think I
deserve an A.

October 13, 2016 (Thursday)

Today in class we dissected the new standards for

unit four. After we discussed rhetoric. I argued
for my grade and did a good job apparently. I
think I got the grade I had wanted. When the

teacher was talking grades with students, the class

started reading and doing activities in the new
book.
October 14, 2016 (Friday)

In class we discussed the homework. We talked

about ethos, pathos, and logos and how they are
used in literature to persuade the reader. We
applied them to real-life ads, commercials, and
propaganda.

October 18, 2016 (Tuesday)

In class we did they say, I say annotations on

Martin Luther King Jrs Letters From
Birmingham Jail. I feel that this text way
thoughtfully written to display the reasons of the
Civil Rights Movement. It is very inspirational
and written in a respectful way even though he
was in jail at the time.

October 21, 2016 (Friday)

Today and yesterday in class we did the questions

for discussion and questions on rhetoric and style.
We did these questions in our table groups. Each
person got an equal amount of questions to
answer.

October 24, 2016 (Monday)

The class started a quick write about how

effective Kings arguments are in LFBJ. I was
required to be two T-E-A-S paragraphs. From the
peer edits on my quick writes, I need to work on
finding and using different openings to my
sentences. I also need to watch my wording.

October 27, 2016 (Thursday)

Today in class we discussed VA list 1.4 synonyms

and antonyms. Then we wrote a summary about
Where I Lived, and What I Lived For by Henry
David Thoreau. After discussing the summaries
with our table group, we started the questions for
discussion.

October 28, 2016 (Friday)

In table groups we read Child of the Americas by

Aurora Levins Morales. It was about how she was
proud of her mixed heritage. We then did the
questions listed after the text in our groups.

October 31, 2016 (Monday)

Today in class we learned about open, closed, and

counterargument statements. Open and
counterargument statements are the strongest.
Closed statements are the weakest.

November 1, 2016 (Tuesday)

The class discussed some common weaknesses in

writing. They include citations, formatting,
analysis, and evidence. Then the class discussed

the types of ideal evidence: relevant, accurate, and

sufficient. Then we read about how to prevent
evidence and worked on our outlines.
November 3, 2016 (Thursday)

In class we first did SRC. After we got 20 minutes

to work on our outlines. When the 20 minutes
were up, we started the timed write on
community. I finished in about 30 minutes then
spent another 10 editing.

November 4, 2016 (Friday)

The class discussed the common errors in writing.

We edited examples from class timed writes. I
learned that during the essay when I cited the
collection I put King and Morales instead of the
collection authors. Although, I still put et.al.

November 7, 2016 (Monday)

I got a 4 in the Community Timed Write. After,

the class went over the Semester 1 Porfolio. I feel
that this is a great opportunity to show my skills at
writing.

November 8, 2016 (Tuesday)

The class deconstructed the new reading and

writing standards. Then the class watched a video
on the background of the book To Kill A
Mockingbird. After going to the library, the class
started reading chapter 1 of the book.

November 10, 2016 (Thursday)

The class went over Verbal Advantage synonyms

and antonyms. We then learned about how to
make a Graffiti Journal. After, the class started
reading chapter 2-5 of TKAM.

November 14, 2016 (Monday)

The class did VA Quiz 1.5. Then the class did Lit
Circles. I was assigned as the leader.

November 15, 2016 (Tuesday)

The class had a class-wide lit circle discussing the

questions. We also worked on the character charts.
We then began to read chapter 7-11.

November 17, 2016 (Thursday)

In class we did Lit Circle #1. I was the group

leader. I felt i did good as a leader. However,
sometimes it was hard to get some of my table
group to engage. We answered a question about
how Jem and Scouts attitude changes towards
Boo Radley. Jem has matured and has started
sympathising with Boo and was sad that his
method of communication with him was cut off.
Scout is still innocent and scared of Boo.

November 18, 2016 (Friday)

Today in class we started with a quick write about

the lessons that Jem and Scout have learned so far

in the novel. Then we began reading chapters 1216, although I already read them. I started Graffiti
Journal #3.
November 28, 2016 (Monday)

The class had another quiz on the reading we did

over break. We then started Lit Circle #3. I was
not the group leader. My groups question was:
Who was Aunt Alexandria and what does she
represent?

November 29, 2016 (Tuesday)

The class started reading chapters 18-19.It was

about the trial of Tom Robinson. In the chapters
we learn that Mayella was abused by left-handed
person. Bob Ewell is left-handed. The class also
learned that Tom Robinson is crippled in his left
hand and cant move it at all.

December 1, 2016 (Thursday)

In class we did Lit Circle #4. Then we began

reading chapters 20- 22. We worked on
annotations and classified which parts of Atticus
speech where ethos, pathos, and logos.

In class we did Lit Circle #5. Then we had a

discussion about how racism still exists. We then
began a quick write about if children should keep
their innocence.

To Kill a Mockingbird. After, I worked on adding
new characters to my character chart. I also
worked on my Semester 1 Porfolio.

December 6, 2016 (Tuesday)

The class did a Lit. Circle. Then we had a

discussion about some serious topics. I worked a
little bit on the final.
