performance.[2]ItwaslaterwrittendownbySundanesewriters,inboththeSundaneseandIndonesian

Summary
IntheheavencalledSvargaloka,therelivedahandsomeandpowerfulgodnamedBataraGurumindaKahyangan.
Hehadalmostbecomethehighestgodintheheavenbutinhispride,hedefiedBatariSunanAmbu,thehighest
mothergoddessinSundanesemythology.Aspunishment,hewascursedandbanishedfromheavenandincarnated
uponearthasablacklutungmonkey,inwhichbodyhewascondemnedtoliveuntilhecouldlearnhumilityand
earnthesincereloveofawoman.
Meanwhile,onearth,PrabuTapaAgung,theagingkingofPasirBatang,hadtwodaughters:Purbararangand
Purbasari.Purbasariwaskindandgoodhearted,whileheroldersisterPurbararangwaswicked.Becauseofthis,
thekingwantedPurbasaritosucceedhimwhenheretired.

Purbasari'sexile
ThisangeredPurbararang,theelderdaughter.WithherfiancIndrajaya,shewenttoawitchandaskedhertocast
amagicalspellandpotionuponPurbasari.Thewitchpreparedadangerouslulur(traditionalbodylotion)and
PurbararangtrickedPurbasarionusingthelotion.ThelulurleftPurbasariwitharashalloverherbody.This
illnesswasregardedasacursefromthegods,soPurbasariwasexiledfromthepalaceanddriventoliveinashack
inthejungle.

Inthejungle,Purbasari'sonlycompanionsweretheanimals.OneofthesewasablackmonkeynamedLutung
Kasarung,whowasactuallythecursedgodGuruminda,andwhohadmagicalpowersandcouldtalkwithhumans.
TohelpPurbasari,LutungKasarungtookhertoalakeandtoldhertobatheinit.Hethentooksomesinom(young
tamarindleaves)fromthetree,gaveittoPurbasariandtoldhertorubherbodywithit.Thismagicallycuredthe
skinconditioncausedbythewitch'sspellandrestoredherbeauty.
Onemorning,PurbasariawokeandwassurprisedtofindherselfinabeautifulpalaceLutungKasarunghad
transformedherhumbleshackintoapalaceovernight.Thenewsofthepalacethathadmagicallyappearedinthe
jungleattractedpeoplefromallaround.Whentheylearnedthatakind,generous,andbeautifulprincesslived
there,manystayed,creatingalivelynewtownwheretherehadbeenjungle.Thenewsofthenewtownreached
Purbararangwhenshediscoveredthatheryoungersisterruledthetown,shewasconsumedwithenvy.
PurbararangdecidedtobringPurbasaridownbygivingherimpossibletaskstodo.Onedayabantengbullran
amokandbeganwreakinghavocinthecapitalcity.Nomanwasabletostopitasitdestroyedthesquareandthe
marketplace.PurbararangsentamessengertoPurbarsari,orderinghertocatchtheragingbull.Purbasariwas
distressedbutLutungKasarungtoldhertotakealockofherownhairandputitaroundthebull'sneck.Purbarsari
didso,andthebullwasinstantlytamed.
PurbararangthenorderedPurbasaritomakeadamanddryuptheLubukSipatahunanwetlands,sothatshecould
catchthefishinthem.LutungKasarungagainsavedtheday,magicallydryingupthewetlands.Whilethepeople
werecatchingfish,amysterioushandsomemanappearedandpresentedsomefishestotheprincesses.Purbararang
wassmittenwiththehandsomemanandinstantlyforgotaboutherfiancIndrajaya.Theman,whowasactually
LutungKasarungtemporarilytransformedbackintohisformasGuruminda,gavehisfishtoPurbasariandthen
vanished.ThisonlymadePurbararangmorejealousofhersister.

Purbasari'sreturn
Afterthis,PurbararangsummonedPurbasaritothepalaceinthecapitalcity.WhenPurbasariarrived,shehadher
throwninjail.LutungKasarungwaitedforPurbasaritocomehometoherownpalacebutwhen,afterseveral
days,therewasnonewsabouther,LutungKasarunggrewalarmed.HestormedthepalacetorescuePurbasari
fromcaptivity.Thetwoofthemfoundthemselvessurroundedbypalaceguards,withLutungfightingbravelyto
protectPurbasari.Inthemiddleofthechaoticfight,PrabuTapaAgungreturnedtothepalacefromthehermitage
wherehehadbeenlivingasanascetic,anddiscoveredhisdaughtersfightingforthethrone.
PurbararangaskedPrabuTapaAgungtoselecttheprincesswiththelongerhairashissuccessor.Thekingagreed
todosothen,whenhemeasuredhisdaughters'hair,hefoundthatPurbasari'swaslonger.
Undaunted,PurbararangmadeanewdemandtoPrabuTapaAgung:thathechooseashissuccessorthedaughter
whohadthemosthandsomefianc.Thiswasacompetitionthatshewasconfidentshecouldwin,sinceshehadthe
handsomeIndrajayaandPurbasarihadnomantosupportheronlyanuglyblackmonkey.However,Purbasari
sawbeyondLutungKasarung'sappearance,andrecognizedhisgoodheart,loyalty,anddevotiontoher.She
reachedouttohimandchosehimasherfianc.Thepeopleridiculedherdecisionbutatthatmoment,thecurse
wasbrokensincehefinallyearnedthesincereloveofPurbasari,andLutungKasarungresumedhisformas
Guruminda.SincehewasmuchmorehandsomethanIndrajaya,PrabuTapaAgungchosePurbasaritobehis
successor.Inonelasteffort,PurbararangaskedIndrajayatofightGurumindainapencaksilatmartialartcombat.
ThefightwasquicklywonbythepowerfulGuruminda.
PurbasaribenevolentlyforgavePubararangandIndrajayaalltheirwrongdoingandallowedthemtoremaininthe
palace.SheandGurumindaweremarried,andlivedhappilyeverafter.

musicgenresspanningfromtraditionaltopop,rock,dangdutandtraditionalSundanesestringandpercussion
