PREFACE
TheIndianInstituteof TechnologyBombay(IITB)isoneof the IndianInstitutesof Technologyinthe
country,setupwiththeobjectiveofmakingavailablefacilitiesforhighereducation,researchandtrainingin
various fields of Science and Technology. The Institute is now recognized as a leader in science and
engineeringeducationnotonlyinIndia,butworldwide.Ithasestablishedafirmfoundationforeducation
andresearchwithahighqualityfacultybaseandhavingavisiontobethefountainheadofnewideasand
innovationsintechnologyandscience.ThemissionofIITBombayistocreateanambianceinwhichnew
ideas,researchandscholarshipflourishandfromwhichtheleadersandinnovatorsoftomorrowemerge.
IIT Bombay on an average annually admits around 900 candidates for the undergraduate programmes
(B.Tech./DualDegreeand4yearB.S.)throughJointEntranceExamination(JEE),30candidatesforB.Des.
Programmethrough UndergraduateCommonEntranceExamforDesign (UCEED)around 300 candidates
for2yearM.Sc.,M.Sc.Ph.D.DualDegree,M.Sc.+M.Tech.DualDegreeprogrammes,over800candidates
for different postgraduate programmes and around 300 candidates for various Ph.D programmes. IIT
Bombayfollowsaspecializedcreditbasedsemestersystem.Therearetwosemestersinanacademicyear
(Autumn: JulyNov;and Spring: JanuaryApril)duringwhichallcoursesspecifiedforvariousdegree
programmesareoffered.Thereisoneadditionalsemesterduringsummer,calledtheSummerSemester,for
summer courses. The students are required to follow certain procedures and meet specified academic
requirementseachsemester.
This booklet gives comprehensive information on the existing Rules and Regulations for B.Tech., Dual
Degreeand4yearB.S.Programmes.
IITBombaygivesfreedomtoitsvariousDepartments/Centers/IDPstotailortheiracademicprogrammesas
pertheirspecificneeds,withintheframeworkoftheRulesandRegulationsapprovedbytheSenatefrom
timetotime.Keepinginviewtheevergrowingchallengesandnewdevelopments,IITBombayrevisedits
UndergraduateProgramme(w.e.f.theAcademicyear2013).Therevisedprogramme,providesadditional
opportunitiesandflexibilitiesforstudentstooptimizetheirlearningexperience.Thisneedscontinuousand
meticulousplanningoftheacademicprofileonthepartofeachstudenttofullyutilizetheopportunities.The
students,andparents/guardians,aretherefore,advisedintheirowninteresttogetfullyfamiliarwiththe
AcademicsystemoftheInstitute,sinceinmanywaysitisdifferentfromwhattheywouldhavecomeacross
earlier. Students attention is brought particularly to the assessment procedures and the specific rules

1.INTRODUCTION
B.Tech./DualDegree/4yearB.S./B.Des.programmesconsistofcoursesinbasicsciences,humanitiesand
social sciences, engineering and technology and other related topics. The sequence of studies broadly
consistsofthreephases.
Thefirstphaseisanintensestudyofsciences,mathematicsandhumanitiesfordeeperunderstandingof
conceptsthanwhatwasdoneinschool.ThisiscommonforallUGprogrammes.
Thesecondphaseisthestudyofengineeringsciencesandtechnicalarts(suchasworkshop,engineering
graphics, etc.). This study is a broad based knowledge in general engineering, and engineering
methodologies,andenablesthestudentstoappreciatethelinksbetweenscienceandengineering.Thisphase
isalso,byandlarge,commonforallUGprogrammes,andoverlapswiththefirstphase.
Inthethirdphase,thestudentsareexposedtosubjectsintheirchosenareasofstudy,designedtotrainthem
inthemethodologiesofanalysisofproblemsandsynthesisofsolutions.Thecoursescovertheprinciples
governingsystemsandprocesses,anddeveloptheabilityforphysicalandanalyticalmodeling,designand
development.Theyarealsointroducedtoengineeringpracticesthroughlaboratorycourses,projects,etc.,and
thesemayvaryfromdisciplinetodiscipline.
Inparallelwiththethirdphase,studentscanstrivetobroadentheirperspectivesthroughtwoopenInstitute
electiveswheretheycantakecoursesdrawnfromacrosstheInstitute.
4yearB.S.programmestudents,inaddition,workindependentlyona project,whereintheyinvestigate
naturalandabstractproblemsandproducemathematical,computationaland/orexperimentalresults.
DualDegreestudentsdoadditionalcoursestogetindepthknowledgeintheirchosendisciplines,oftenwith
specializations.Inaddition,theyworkonaresearchanddevelopmentprojectduringtheirfinalyear.
Atvariousstagesoftheprogramme,studentsareinitiatedintoresearchmethodologies,libraryreference
work, use of engineering and scientific equipments / instruments, learning of modern computational
techniques,writingoftechnicalandscientificreportsandeffectivecommunication.
Apart from the minimum credit requirements for the award of the degree, opportunities exists for
supplementingthelearningexperiencebycreditingadditionalcourses,indiverseareas.Theseadditional
credits,whentheyareinfocusedareas,canearnthestudentscredentialslikeMinor/Honors.

TheacademicprogrammesoftheInstitutearegovernedbyRulesandRegulationsapprovedbytheSenate
fromtimetotime.TheSenateisastatutoryandsupremebodythatgovernsallacademicmattersofthe
Institute,andtherulingsofSenateChairman(DirectorofTheInstitute)arefinalinregardtoallacademic
issues.AdefinitetimescheduleissetbytheSenateforvariousacademicactivities,throughanAcademic
Calendarissuedatthebeginningofeachacademicyear. TheSenatecontinuouslyassessestheacademic
programmesandmakesappropriaterevisions/modifications/improvementsasandwhenrequiredthrough

two Institute level Senate sub committees: The UnderGraduate Programmes Committee (UGPC) for
undergraduate programmes and a Post Graduate Programmes Committee ( PGPC) for postgraduate
programmes. The Dean of Academic Programmes (Dean, AP) and The Associate Dean of Academic
Programmes(AssociateDean,AP)aretheConveners&Coconvenersrespectivelyofthesecommittees.
Similarly, performanceofeachstudentismonitoredbytheSenatethroughtwoInstitutelevelcommittees:
UnderGraduateAcademicPerformanceEvaluationCommittee(UGAPEC)and PostGraduateAcademic
PerformanceEvaluationCommittee(PGAPEC).Convenersforthesecommitteesaredesignatedfromamong
Senatemembers.ThesefourcommitteesmakerecommendationstotheSenate,and,inturnseek/receive
opinions/recommendations,whenrequired,fromthetwoDepartmentlevelcommitteesineachdepartment,
DepartmentUnderGraduateCommittee(DUGC)andDepartmentPostGraduateCommittee(DPGC).The
DUGCs and DPGCs handle all academic matters, related to both academic programmes as well as
performanceofindividualstudents.TheHeadoftheDepartmentistheconvenerforboththeseDepartmental
committees.TheSenateaswellasitssubcommitteeshavestudentrepresentatives.Administrativebackup
forallacademicmattersisprovidedbytheAcademicOffice,withaDeputyRegistrar(Academic)asin
charge.
OnjoiningtheInstitute,astudentoragroupofstudentsis/areassignedtoaFacultyAdviserfromhis/her
Department.StudentsareexpectedtoconsulttheFacultyAdviseronanymatterrelatingtotheiracademic
performanceandthecoursestheymaytakeinvarioussemesters/summerterms.FacultyAdviserguidesthe
studentstocompletetheircoursesofstudyfortherequireddegreeinasmoothandsatisfactorymanner.
AllacademicissuesconnectedwiththeB.Tech.,Dualdegreeand4yearB.S./B.Des. programmesare
handledbyDUGC,UGAPECandUGPC.Ifonanyacademicmatterastudentwouldliketoapproachthis

2.1Curriculum
EveryDepartmenthasaprescribedcoursestructurewhich,ingeneralterms,isknownastheCurriculumor
theCoursesofStudy(COS).Itprescribesallthecourses/labs/otherrequirementsforthedegreeandsets
outthenominalsequencesemesterwise.Italsogivesthesyllabusandalistoftext/referencebooksforeach
course. The Courses of Study details are updated every semester and are made available at
http://asc.ihttp://asc.iitb.ac.in

2.2 SemesterAutumn,Spring,Summer
TheInstitutefollowsaspecializedcreditbasedsemestersystem.Therearetworegularsemestersinayear.
ThesemesterthatbeginsinJuly(JulytoNov.)isknownastheAutumnSemesterorSemester1andthe
semesterthatbeginsinJanuary(Jan.toApril)isknownastheSpringSemesterorSemester2.Duringthe
summer vacation, i.e., (MayJune), there is one additional semester for summer courses known as the
SummerSemester.Onlyafewcoursesruninsummer(Sec.3.8)andareutilizedbystudents,whenoffered,to
clearfailed/droppedcourses.
2.3CourseCreditStructure
In general,acertainquantumofacademicworkmeasuredintermsofcreditsislaiddownastherequirement
foraparticulardegree.Astudentearnscreditsbysatisfactorilyclearingcourses/otheracademicactivities
everysemester.Thecreditsassociatedwithacoursearedependentuponthenumberofhoursofinstruction
perweekinthatcourse.Similarlythecreditassociatedwithanyoftheotheractivitiesisdependentuponthe
quantumofworkexpectedtobeputinforeachoftheotheractivityperweek.
2.3.1TheoryandLaboratoryCourses:
CoursesarebroadlyclassifiedasTheoryCoursesandLaboratoryCourses.Theorycoursesconsistoflecture
(L)andtutorial(T)hours,butmayhaveattachedpractical(P)hoursinspecialcases.Laboratorycourses
consistofpracticalhours,butmayhaveattachedtutorialhoursinspecialcases.Credit(C)foracourseis
obtainedbymultiplyingthenumberofhoursofinstructionperweekinthatcourse,bytwo(2)forlectureand
tutorialhours,andbyone(1)forlaboratoryhours.Thus,forexample,atheorycoursehavingtwolectures
andonetutorialperweekthroughoutthesemestercarriesacreditof6.Similarly,alaboratorycoursehaving

Degree.Seminarisacoursewhereinundertheguidanceofafacultymemberastudentisexpectedtodoan
indepth study in a specialized area by doing a survey of published technical literature, understanding
differentaspectsoftheproblemandarrivingatastatusreport.Whiledoingaseminar,thestudentisexpected
to critically analyze works of various authors/researchers, learn the investigation methodologies, study
concepts,techniquesandtheresultspresentedinthesepapers,andpresentaseminarreport.Itismandatory
togiveaseminarpresentationbeforeapanelconstitutedforthepurpose.Seminarstypicallycarry3credits.
2.3.3Projects
2.3.3.1B.Tech.Projects(BTPIandBTPII):
SomedepartmentsmayprescribeaProjectasarequirementfortheB.Tech.degree,orasarequirementfor
Honors(seeSec.2.5.2),whereinundertheguidanceofafacultymemberastudentinthesixthsemester,or
later,isrequiredtodosomeinnovativeworkwiththeapplicationofknowledgegainedwhileundergoing
variouscoursesintheearlieryears.Thestudentisexpectedtodoasurveyofliteratureinthesubject,work
outaprojectplanandcarryitoutthroughexperimentationand/ormodeling/computation.Throughthe
projectworkthestudenthastoexhibitskillsforbothanalysisandsynthesis.Theseprojects(BTPs)maybe
offered as a single unit of 12 credits (BTP) or two modules of 6 credits each (BTPI and BTPII).
Departments may also prescribe a minimum performance in BTPI for being eligible for BTPII (See
Sec.5.5.1).
Evenwhenitisnotprescribedasaminimumrequirementforthedegreeorwhennotbeinginterestedin
Honours,astudentcanopttodoaBTPasadditionallearning,ifs/hesodesiresandcanfindsuitable
supervisor(s)toguideher/him.
2.3.3.2 4yearB.S.ProjectandIntegratedM.Sc.Project
Projectismandatoryfor4yearB.S.Theprojectisnormallydoneduringboththesemestersofthefinalyear,
wherein the students work independently and investigate natural and abstract problems and produce
mathematical,computationaland/orexperimentalresults.4yearB.S.andIntegratedM.Sc.Projectcarriesa
totalof30credits.

2.3.3.3DualDegreeProject(DDP):
DualDegreeProjectisamandatoryrequirementintheDualDegreeProgrammes.Theprojectconsistsoftwo
stages,spreadoverafourteenmonthduration,normallystartingfromthesummeraftertheeighthsemester
and ending with the summer after the tenth semester. These are essentially research and development
projects,whereastudenttrainshim/herself,undertheguidanceofsupervisor/s,inindepthanalysisofan
engineeringproblemandattemptssynthesisofasolution.Literaturesurvey,problemanalysisandproblem
definition,extensiveexperimental/modelingwork,andanalysisofresultstypicallyformvariouscomponents
oftheprojectwork.DDPcarriesatotalof72credits.
2.3.4NonCreditRequirements:
2.3.4.1NCC/NSO/NSS
Oneofthethreeactivities,NationalCadetCorps(NCC)orNationalSportsOrganization(NSO)orNational
SocialService(NSS)isamandatoryrequirementforallstudentsfortheawardofdegree.Thesearenormally
conductedduringeveningsofweekdaysandaredesignedtobuildcharacterandtosensitizethestudentsto
social/nationalissues.TheseactivitiescarrynocreditsandareevaluatedasPass(PP)/NotPass(NP).
2.4
MinimumCreditRequirementsandPlanningofIndividualAcademicProgramme
Dependingonthediscipline,theminimumcreditrequiredforawardofaB.Tech.degreeisbetween252and
264. This is nominally divided into 108 credits as Institute requirements and 144 156 credits as
Departmentalrequirements.SimilarlytheminimumcreditrequirementforInt.M.Sc.is340andfortheDual
Degree,itisbetween278to390(250264B.Tech.+30Honors+96M.Tech.)Thecreditsaredistributed
semesterwiseasshownintheCoursesofStudybulletinforeachdepartment.Coursesgenerallyprogressin
sequences,buildingcompetenciesandtheirpositioningindicatescertainacademicmaturityonthepartofthe
students.Somecoursesdo,inaddition,specifypassingincoursesofferedearlierintheprogrammesaspre
requisites.StudentsareexpectedtofollowthesemesterwisescheduleofcoursesgivenintheCoursesof
Studybulletin;theydo,however,havefreedomtofollowalternativeschedulestooptimizetheiracademic
profilewithadditionalcourses,keepingtherequirementsforeachcourseinmind.Forstudentswithbacklog
courses,suchreschedulingmayevenbecomenecessary.Suchdeparturesfromsuggestedschedulesneedto
bedoneverycarefully,andalwayswithadvicefromtheFacultyAdviser.
2.5OpportunitiesforAdditionalLearning:MINOR,HONOURS,ETC.:
TheB.Tech./DualDegree/4yearB.S.programmesrecognizethefactthatstudents aspirations,ononehand,
andthedemandsoftheworkplace,ontheother,havebecomehighlydiverse.Everystudenthasspecific
abilities, interests and career goals. Employers too look for people with different combinations of
competenciesandflavours.
Eachprogramme prescribes minimum credits and courses that qualify a candidate for the award of the
Degreeinaparticulardiscipline.ThetotalcreditsfortheB.Tech.Programme,forexample,variesbetween
252264dependingonthediscipline,asmentionedearlier.Thisapproximatelyconvertsitselfintoaboutfour
theorycoursesandoneortwolaboratorycoursesorotheractivitieslikeseminar,project,etc.,everysemester.
Every student in that discipline undergoes this programme. This minimum content may not have much
flexibility.
TheDualDegreeprogrammewillhaveanadditionalmasterslevelcomponentof96creditswhichincludes
24creditsofpostgraduatelevelcoursesandaMastersthesis.Theprogrammealsoprescribesamandatory
honourscomponentof30credits.Thisapproximatelyconvertsitselfintoaboutfivetheorycoursesandone
ortwolaboratorycoursesorotheractivitieslikeseminar,projectsetc.,everysemester.
NormalloadduringasemesterpermitsB.Tech.,4YearB.Sc.andB.Des.students,whoarenotidentifiedas
academicallyweak(seeSec.5.15.2),tooptionallytakeanadditionalcourse(about6credits).[Thissurplus
qualitytime(equivalenttoatotalofabout36credits,aboutsixcreditseverysemesterafterthefirstyear)
availablebeyondtheminimumprogrammepermitsastudenttotailorher/hiscurriculumvitaetosatisfy

her/his widely varying interests /abilities/aspirations and to suit multifarious competencies that the
employersdesire].
It is expectedthat all students with reasonablygood academic standing, utilize this surplus time for
enhancingtheiracademiclearningexperience,thoughtheinitiativeisleftentirelytothem.Theycanuseitto
creditanassortmentofcourses/projectsanywhereintheInstitute,(subjecttorequirementsofeachofthese
courses being met), to gain a wide exposure. These additional academic accomplishments will find a
separatementioninthetranscript(Sec.5.10.4).Theycanalsocreditfocusedactivitieswhichcanqualifyasa
minor/honours(detailsbelow).Theymayalternativelydevotepartoralloftheadditionaltimeforextra

Since seats available in such additional courses are often limited and the competition severe, students
aspiringtodotheseadditionalcourseshavetomaintainhighacademicstandingtoregisterinthesecourses.
Sustainedhardworkanddiligencethroughoutthedurationoftheprogrammeisnecessarytomaintainthe
academicstandingandgainentrytocoursesofone'schoice.Thisadditionaltimewillbeusedbystudents
withbacklogs(failedordroppedcourses)toclearthemwithproperclassroomlearning.Theymaynotbe
abletotakethecoursestowardsadditionalaccomplishmentsmentionedabove,ifanyofher/hisbacklog
coursesisrunninginaparticularsemester,ors/hedoesnothaveadequateacademicstanding(seeSec.5.1
5.4).
2.5.1.Minor
Minorisanadditionalcredentialastudentmayearnifs/hedoes30creditsworthofadditionallearningina
disciplineotherthanher/hismajordisciplineofB.Tech.degree.AllacademicunitsintheInstitutewilloffer
minorsintheirdisciplines,andwillprescribethesetofcoursesand/orotheractivitieslikeprojectsnecessary
forearningaminorinthatdiscipline.
AstudentpreregisterforaminorwhichisfinallyallottedonthebasisofhighestCPI.S/heaccumulates
creditsbyregisteringfortherequiredcourses,andiftherequirementsforaparticularminoraremetwithin
theprescribedminimumtimelimitforthecourse,theminorwillbeawarded.Thiswillbementionedinthe
DegreeCertificateasBachelorofTechnologyinxxxwithMinorinyyy.Thefactwillalsobereflectedin
thetranscript,alongwiththelistofcoursestaken.
Sincethenumberofseatsavailableforeachofthecoursesisoftenlimited,onehastocompeteforaplacein
everycourse.Maintainingahighacademicstandingthereforeisessentialforcompletingalltherequirements
foraminorasmentionedearlier.Evenifonespecifiedcoursecannotbeearnedduringthecourseofthe
programme,thatminorwillnotbeawarded.Theindividualcoursecreditsearned,however,willbereflected
inthetranscript.
Fortheawardoftheminor,allrequirementstowardsthebasicdegreeandtheminorhavetobecompleted
withinthestipulatedperiodoftheprogrammeoneisregisteredfor.
MinoroptionisnotavailabletoDualDegreestudentsunlesstheyhaveanexcellentacademicstanding
(CategoryI,Sec.5.15.2)
TheSenateinits224thmeetingheldon10thFebruary,2016,approvedtheproposalofallowingDualDegree
studentstoundertakeminorcoursesinthe5thYearonthebasisofthefollowingtermsandconditions.
TheStudentswithCPI>8(Category1Students)beallowedtotakeupanadditionalcourseandoverload
themselvesupto48creditsintheirfifthyear.Thesestudentsmaybeallowedtotagtheadditionalcourseasa
minorcourseintheirfifthyear,soastocompleterequirementstogetaMinorDegree.

2.5.2Honours
Honoursisanadditionalcredentialastudentmayearnifs/heoptsfortheextra24creditsneededforthisin
her/his own discipline. The concerned department specifies the credit requirements for earning the
Honours.Honoursisnotindicativeofclass.
Atthetimeofregistration,astudentregisterforHonours.S/heaccumulatescreditsbyregisteringforthe
requiredcourses.Onsuccessfulaccumulationofcreditsattheendoftheprogramme,thiswillbementioned
intheDegreeCertificateasBachelorofTechnologyinxxx,withHonours.Thefactwillalsobereflected
inthetranscript,alongwiththelistofcoursestaken.
FortheawardofthehonourstoB.Tech.students,allrequirementstowardsthebasicdegreeandthehonours
havetobecompletedwithinthestipulatedperiodoftheprogrammeoneisregisteredfor.
DualdegreesofB.TechandM.Techintrinsicallydemandadeeperexpertiseinthemajordisciplineofthe
student,andtherefore DualDegreestudentsarerequiredtocompletetherequirementsforHonours,as
prescribedbythedepartment. TherequirementsforHonoursforaDualDegreestudentmaybedifferent
fromthoseprescribedforaBTechstudent.Thisrequirementisoverandabovethebasicrequirementsforthe
dual degrees as prescribed by each department. The total credit requirement is therefore 252
264(B.Tech.)+30(Honours)+96(M.Tech.).
2.5.3.TwoMinorsetc.forStudentswithExcellentAcademicStanding
Studentswithexcellentstanding(CategoryI,CPI8.0,nobacklogs,See.Sec.5.1)canoptforearningan
additionalminor(i.e.,anHonoursandaminor,ORiftimetablepermits,twominors),byoverloading
themselves ( See Sec.5.2). Students should however take care to see that they are not overstretching
themselvesbyoptingforsuchoverloadsoverextendedperiods.
Students withanexcellent academicstanding(Category I,CPI>8.0, nobacklogs, see Sec.5.1) whoare
permittedtooverloadthemselves,maybeabletoearnaminorapartfromthemandatoryHonours.Rulesfor
overloadingapply(Sec.5.4).
3.REGISTRATION
IIT Bombay followsaspecializedcreditbasedsemestersystem,thereforeregistrationatthebeginningof
eachsemesterontheprescribeddatesannouncedintheAcademicCalendar,ismandatoryforeverystudent
tills/hecompletesher/hisprogramme.Ifastudentdoesnotregisterinaparticularsemesterwithoutprior
permissionoftheUGAPEC,her/hisstudentshipisliabletobecancelled.Studentsarenotpermittedtore
registerforcourse/(s),whichtheyhavealreadypassed.Withoutregistration,anyacademicactivity(course/
seminar/projectetc.)undergonebyastudentwillnotbecountedtowardstherequirementsofher/hisdegree.
3.1Semesterwiseregistration
On joining the Institute,eachstudentisassignedtoaFacultyAdviseroranAdvisorygroup(Sec.3.9).The
studentcanregisterforcoursess/heintendstotakeduringagivensemesterorsummertermonthebasisof
theprogrammeforeachdisciplineasgivenintheCoursesofStudybulletinandaspertheadvicegivenby
his/her Faculty Adviser The Faculty Adviser is expected to discuss with the student his/her academic
performanceduringtheprevioussemesterandthendecidethenumberandnatureofthecoursesforwhich
s/hecanregisterduringthesemesterwithintheframeworkoftheguidelinesasapprovedbytheSenate.The
FacultyAdvisermayadvisethestudenttodroponeormorecourses/activitiesbasedonhis/heracademic
performance(Sec.4.14.4).InfacttheFacultyAdvisermayevenadviseareducedloadprogrammeover
severalsemestersforstudentswithpoorperformanceattheendofthefirstsemester/year.

3.2ProcedureforRegistration
TheInstitutegenerallyhasanonlineregistrationsystemandtheregistrationisnormallydoneonthefirsttwo
days of each semester. The registration schedule is announced in the Academic Calendar. In all
circumstances,registrationmustbecompletedonorbeforetheprescribedlastdateforregistration.Students
havingoutstandingduestotheInstituteorahostelshallnotbepermittedtoregister.
3.2.1OnlineRegistration
OnlineregistrationprocessinvolvesfillingupofanonlineCourseRegistrationForm(CRF)statingthe
coursesandproject/seminaretc.,thatthestudentproposestocompleteduringthatsemesterasperthe
prescribedcurriculum.ThisshouldbedoneinconsultationwiththeFacultyAdviser,whofinallyapproves
theregistration.Unlessthisprocedureiscompleted,registrationwillbeconsideredinvalid.Allstudents
withoutbacklogs/lessthan5backlogswilldoonlineregistration.
3.2.2ManualRegistration
Studentshaving5ormorebacklogcourse/(s)arerequiredtodomanualregistrationbyfillinguptheCourse
RegistrationForm(CRF)whichwillbemadeavailabletothembytheAcademicOffice,throughtheir
FacultyAdviserThestudentshoulddulycompletetheCRF,statingthecoursesandproject/seminaretc.
thats/heproposestocompleteduringthatsemesteraspertheprescribedcurriculum,inconsultationwith
theFacultyAdviser,getitapprovedbyhim/herandthensubmitthesametotheAcademicOfficewithinthe
stipulateddateforregistration.
3.2.3LateRegistration
Onlyforvalidreasons,lateregistrationmaybepermittedtillthedatespecifiedintheAcademicCalendar,on
paymentofalateregistrationfee.
3.2.4 Registrationforthefirsttwosemesters
In each of the first two semesters, courses common to all branches are generally offered. A student is
normallyrequiredtoregisterforallthecourseslistedinthecurriculumforthesetwosemesters.Students,
whoareidentifiedasacademicallyweakattheendoffirstsemester,maybeprescribedareducedload.Such
studentsarerequiredtodomanualregistrationonly.
3.2.5 Registrationforthirdandsubsequentsemesters
Fromthirdsemesteronwards,registrationisdependentontheacademicstandingofthestudent(Sec.4.1).A
studentwithanacademicstandingofCategoryI,IIorIIIregistersfortheacademicloadspecifiedforthat
semesterbytheDepartment.Inadditions/hemayaddonemorecourse(6/8credits)towardsadditional
learningortoclearbacklogcourses,withoutthisbeingconsideredanoverload(Sec.4.5).
Studentswithpooracademicstanding(CategoryIVorV)areadvisednottoattemptfullload.Faculty
Advisersaftercarefulscrutinywilladvisereducedloadsdependingonpreviousperformance.Everystudent
howeverisrequiredtoregisterforaminimumof18creditsinanysemester,(Sec.4.3)
3.3
RegistrationforNoncreditcourses(NCC/NSO/NSS)
NoncreditrequirementsareassessedasPass(PP)/NotPass(NP)subjecttothefulfillmentoftheminimum
requirements of these activities and a minimum of 80% attendance. The award of degree is subject to
successfulcompletionoftheseactivities.OneofNCC,NSOorNSS,isamandatoryrequirement.Students
areexpectedtocompletetheserequirementsduringthefirstyear(firsttwosemesters).Formalregistrationfor
anyoneoftheseactivitiesmustbedonealongwithothercourses,atthebeginninginthefirsttwosemesters.
Thechoiceoftheactivitywillbedoneonthebasisoftheaptitudeofthestudentforanyoneofthese
activitiesandwillbedecidedbyacommitteeconstitutedforthepurpose.Onceregisteredforoneofthese
activities,nochangewillbepermittedatalaterstage.

AstudentwillbeawardedPP(Pass)gradeforanyoneoftheseactivitiess/heisregisteredfor,inthat
semester,providedtheminimumrequirementismetduringthatsemestertogetherwithattendancecriteria.
NotsatisfyingtheserequirementswillresultinafailgradeNP(NotPass),andthestudenthastoreregister
fortheactivityinthenextsemester.Thisrequirementmustbecompletedbeforetheendofthesecondyear.
Incasevalidreasonsexist,astudentmaybegivenspecialpermissionforcompletionofthisrequirement
beyondsecondyear.Thegradesaresenttotheacademicofficebeforethecommencementofthesemester
endexamination.
Inadditiontotheabovemandatoryrequirements,thestudentsarepermittedtotakeNSS/NSO/NCCin
subsequentyearstoo,iftheyhavespecialinterest.Thiswillbementionedinthetranscript(Sec.5.10.4)

i. EachDualDegreestudentregisteringinthesummeraftertheeighthsemestershallbegivenatopicfor

ii. ThetotaldurationfortheDDPisfourteenmonths.DDPconsistsoftwostages.RegistrationforStageI

(3036 credits) is normally at the beginning of 8th semester and for stage II (3642 credits) after
succeedingofStageI.ThedurationofStageIincludeboththesummerandthesucceedingautumn
semester,andthatforStageIIincludesthespringandthesucceedingsummersemester.Incaseof

The 5 year Integrated M.Sc. Project and the 4 year B.S. programme project consists of two stages.

the10thsemester(Spring).Thedurationoftheprojectisspreadoverasemester.Incaseofdefermentdueto
backlogsetc.,theregistrationcanbedoneinthesucceedingsemestersonrecommendationoftheDUGCand
approvaloftheDeanofAcademicProgrammes.Thetopicsfortheprojectworkwillnormallybeassigned
towardstheendoftheprefinalyearbytheProjectCoordinatoroftheDepartmentandtheworkisdone
duringboththesemestersofthefinalyear.Studentsareassignedprojectworkaspertheschedulementioned
intheAcademicCalendarafteritsapprovalbytheirrespectiveFacultyAdviser/DUGC.Attheendofthe
firststage,thestudentisrequiredtosubmitapreliminaryreportofhisworkbyaprescribeddate( asper
academiccalendar)totheCocoordinatorandpresentittoaPanelofExaminers.Registrationforsecond

CourseAdjustment/Droppingofcourses
1. TheAcademicCalendarsetsadate,normallytwoweeksafterthecommencementofthesemester,
forCourseAdjustment.Onorbeforethisdate,astudentispermittedtomakeadjustmentsinher/his
academicloadbyadditionordeletionofoneormorecourses,projectsetc.,providedthetotalcredits
donotexceed theoverloadrule(Sec.4.5)orfallbelow18credits,bysuchadjustments.Course
adjustment has tobedone in consultationwiththe Faculty Adviser When the need forcourse
adjustmentthroughaddition,substitutionordroppingofcourse/sarises,thestudentwithoutany
backlog should do online course adjustment and students with backlog course/s should do it
manuallybyfillingaCourseAdjustmentForm(CAF).CAFhastobesignedbyboththestudentand
theFacultyAdviserandsubmittedtotheAcademicOffice.

2. Ifinthesecondoranyofthesubsequentsemesters,astudentfindsher/hisacademicloadtooheavy,
s/hemaydroponeortwocoursesoutoftheregisteredonesonadvicefromtheFacultyAdviser,
providedtheminimumcreditrequirements(18credits) isfulfilled.Thelastdateforsuchdropsis
typically 10 days after the end of the mid semester examination, and is set in the Academic
Calendar.Itisexpectedthattheresultsofthemidsemesterexaminationwillbeknownwithinseven
daysoftheendoftheexamination.

3. Course/sdroppedbyastudentmaybetakenduringasubsequentsemesterorduringthesummer
term(ifoffered).

3.6

DroppingofaSemester:

1.Astudentmayopt/beadvisedtodropanentiresemester,withpriorapprovalofDUGC/UGAPECdueto
thefollowingreasons:
i. Duringaregisteredsemester,ifastudentfindsthats/heisunabletocopeupwiththestudiesand/or
doesnothavesufficientexposuretomostofthecoursesregisteredinthatsemesterduetoseverehealth
problemorsomeothervalidreasonsbeyondher/hiscontrol,s/hecanopttodroptheentiresemester,on
advicefromtheFacultyAdviserandwithpermissionfromtheDUGC/UGAPEC(Sec.3.5).
ii. Astudentmayseekasemesterdrop,duetoseverepersonalhealthproblem,unavoidablefamily
commitmentsorothervalidreasonsbeyondher/hiscontrol,onadvicefromtheFacultyAdviserandwith
permissionfromtheDUGC/UGAPEC,priortothecommencementofthesemesteritself.
2.Inallcasesofseverehealthproblems,medicalcertificateissuedbyIITHospitalisessential.Ifhowever,
themedicalcertificateisissuedbyotherhospitals/privatepractitioners,thecertificatesshouldbeduly
authenticatedbytheCMO,IITHospital.Inallothercases,requestsfordroppingthesemestershouldbe
accompaniedbysupportingdocumentsasrequired.
3.AstudentwillbenotpermittedtodropasemesteraftertheawardofDX/IIgrade/(s)and/orsemester
endexamination.
4.Suchbreaksfromstudiesisnormallynotpermittedforacontinuousperiodinexcessofoneyear.
5. Not registering for any semester before the last date for registration without prior approval of the
UGAPECwillresultintheUGAPECrecommendingterminationofthestudentship(SeeSec.7.3)

6.Hostelaccommodationandotherinstitutionalfacilitieswillnotbeextendedinanysemesterforwhichthe
studenthasnotregistered.
3.7
RegistrationforAdditionalCourses:(Minor,Honors,etc.)
As mentioned in Sec. 2.5, opportunities are provided for students to enhance their learning experience
throughearningadditionalcredits.Extracreditsearnedinspecifiedfocusedareascanalsoleadtoearningan
Honors(inonesowndiscipline)oraMinor(inotherdisciplines).
Startingfromthethirdsemester,studentswhoarenotacademicallyweak(seeSec.5.1,5.2)arepermittedto
takeonecourseequivalenteverysemesterinadditiontotheprescribedcoursesfortheirdegree,asmentioned
earlier,subjecttoavailabilityofseatsinthecourse.AstudenthastopreregisterfortheMinorcourses/he
intendstotaketowardstheendoftheprevioussemesterandseatswillbeallottedbasedontheacademic
performanceofthestudenttowardsthebasicrequirementofhis/herdegree.
One should note that there is no specific registration for Honours Courses. One accumulates the
requiredcreditsduringthecourseoftheprogramme,andtheadditionalcredentialisawardedifthecriteria
setforthemaremetwhenthestudentgraduates.
In any semester, a student cannot register for only those courses which form part of her/his additional
learning component. There should at least be one course component that is specified as the minimum
requirement of the degree. Moreover, a student cannot overstay in the programme once the minimum
requirementsprescribedforthedegreearecompleted.
3.8Summercourseregistration
Studentscanregisterforcoursesduringsummer(SeeSec.5.8)uptoamaximum18creditsorthreecourses
dependingontheiracademicstanding,onpaymentofregistrationfeeatprescribedrates.Acoursewillrun
duringsummerprovidedafacultymemberisavailableforrunningthecourseandaminimumof5students
areregisteredforthecourse.TheSummerSemestertypicallyrunsfor8weeks,duringMayJuly.Thetotal
numberofcontacthoursforthecoursesremainsthesameasthatduringtheregularsemesters,andtherefore
thecoursesrunatacceleratedpace.Theevaluationandgradingpatternsalsoremainthesameasduringthe
regularsemesters.
3.9
RoleoftheFacultyAdviser
OnjoiningtheInstitute,astudentoragroupofstudentsis/areassignedtoaFacultyAdviserThestudentsare
expectedtoconsulttheFacultyAdviseronanymatterrelatingtotheiracademicperformanceandthecourses
theymaytakeinvarioussemesters.TheFacultyAdviserguidestothestudentstocompletetheircoursesof
study for the required degree in a smooth and satisfactory manner. For effective utilization of the
opportunitiesforadditionalacademicaccomplishments,planningoftheindividual academicjourneyneeds
carefulconsideration,andconstantconsultationwiththeFacultyAdvisersisimperative.Thus,theroleofthe
Faculty Adviser is of immense importance. The Faculty Adviser is the person whom the
parents/guardiansshouldcontactforperformancerelatedissuesoftheirward.
TheroleoftheFacultyAdviserisoutlinedbelow:
1. Guidethestudentsabouttherulesandregulationsgoverningthecoursesofstudyforaparticular
degree.
2. Advisethestudentsforregisteringcoursesaspercurriculumgivenorotherwisewithinthescopeof
therulesandregulationssetbytheSenatefromtimetotime.ForthispurposetheFacultyAdviser
hastodiscusswiththestudenthis/heracademicperformanceduringtheprevioussemesterandthen
decidethenumberandnatureofthecoursesforwhichs/hecanregisterduringthesemesterasper
thecurriculum.
3. Approvetheregistrationofthestudents. Studentwithoutanybacklogwilldoonlineregistration.
FacultyAdviserhastoapprovethesame.Forthispurposes/hehasbeenprovidedonlineinterface.

Studentshavingbacklogcourses(5ormorecourses)hastoregistermanually.CourseRegistration
Form(CRF)ofsuchstudentsisprovidedtotheFacultyAdviserthroughtheDepartmentaloffice.
TheFAhastoapprovetheCRFbysigningonit,beforetheprescribedlastdate.
4. Advice students to overload / drop one or more courses/activities based on her/his academic
performanceaspertheprescribedrules.
5. Attheendofthefirstsemester/year,theFacultyAdvisermayevenadviseareducedloadprogramme
forapoorlyperformingstudent.Thisreducedloadprogrammemayspreadoverseveralsemesters
subjecttominimumloadforthesemesterandcompletionofthedegreeprogrammewithinthe
prescribedmaximumperiod.SuchreducedloadprogrammeistobepreparedbytheFacultyAdviser
inconsultationwiththeStudent;her/hisparentandrecommendthesamethroughtheDUGCtothe
UGAPECforconsiderationandapprovalbeforethecommencementofthesemester.
6. Payspecialattentiontoweakstudentsandcarefullymonitorperformanceofstudentsrecommended
forslowtrackoption.

Thecurriculumhasspecialfeaturesthatastudentmustbeawareofwhileregisteringforcourses.These

AcademicStanding:

4.2Normalload
ThetotalrequirementofcreditsfortheB.Tech.isbetween252and264,dependingonthediscipline.The
averageprescribedcreditspersemesteristhereforearound33credits.Similarsemestercreditsareprescribed
for5YearIntegratedM.Sc.and4yearB.S.studentstoo.
Inthefirstsemesterofthefirstyear,thenormalsemesterloadis33or34creditsdependinguponwhethera
student has registered for ME 119 (5credits) or ME113(4credits). Everystudent registers for all the
prescribedcourses.
Inthesecondsemesterofthefirstyear,astudentofCategoryIII,andcategoryIV(ifnotrecommendedfor
termination,seeSec.7.3)asaspecialcase,willbepermittedtotakeonebacklogcourseinadditiontothe

relaxationoftheCPIcriterionfortheadditionaloverload.AchangeofstatusfromCredittoAuditinrespect
ofsuchcoursesmaybealloweduptothemidsemesterexaminationwiththepriorapprovaloftheUGAPEC.
Overloadingofcoursesissubjecttotimetableconstraints.
SincethisoverloadingcanleadtopooreroverallperformanceintermsofSPI,CPIetc.,thisshouldbedone
aftercarefulconsiderationanddiscussionwiththeFacultyAdviser
4.5Carryingbacklogsforward
Attemptsaremadeintheprogrammetogiveanearlyopportunitytoregisterforthebacklogcoursefor
studentswhofailacourseinagivensemester.Thisisprovidedinthenewcurriculumintwoways.
4.5.1

Offeringofcorecoursesinbothsemesters

TheInstitutecorecoursesareexpectedtobeofferedinboththesemesters,sothatastudentcanregisterfora
backlogcourseintheimmediatenextsemester.Fordepartmentlevelcorecourses,particularlythosethat
formprerequisitesforcourseswhichfollow,theprocedureofofferingthecourseinbothsemesters,istobe
adopted.Thisgivesastudentasecondattempttoclearabacklogcorecourseintheimmediatesucceeding
semester.
4.5.2

Normalloadaccommodatescreditsforanadditionalcourse

As mentioned in Section 4.1, B.Tech./5 Year Integrated M.Sc/4 Year B.S./Dual Degree students with
standingCategoryI,IIorIIIcanregisterforanadditionalcourseeverysemesteraspartoftheirnormalload.
StudentsofCategoryIIIthereforecanclearbacklogcoursesattheearliestopportunity,withoutdropping
courses.
Fordepartmentcorecoursesthatarenotpossibletobeofferedinbothsemesters,theFacultyAdvisermay
advisethestudentsappropriatelyfordroppingthebacklogcourseinfavorofsomeothercourseinorderto
avoidacascadingeffectinsubsequentsemesters.TheFacultyAdvisersandDUGCswouldexercisespecial
careandassistthestudentsinthisregard.
4.6Auditcourse
Astudentwantingjustanexposuretoacourse,withouttherigorsofobtainingagoodgrade,auditsa
course.Theminimumrequirementisnormally80%attendance,withanyadditionalrequirementsassetby
the instructor such as submission of assignments and minimum performance in some of the insem
evaluations.ThegradeawardedisAUwhichdoesnotcarryanygradepointsandthereforedoesnotfigure
inSPI/CPIcalculations.However,thiswouldberestrictedtoamaximumoftwo(2)coursesintheentire
periodoftheprogramme.Auditingofcoursesduringaregularsemestersandsummertermispermitted

underthefollowingconditions:
i. StudentsinCategoryIandIIwithCPI > 6.0willbepermittedtoAuditacourse.Acoursecanbe
auditedprovidedthecourseisofferedinthesemesterasacreditcourseforothers,andthereisnoslot
clash.PriorpermissionoftheInstructorisrequired.
ii.TheAUgradewouldbeawardedbytheinstructor,iftheattendanceissatisfactoryandadditional
requirementsassetoutbytheinstructoraremet.Iftheattendanceandperformanceisnotsatisfactory,
theinstructorwillawardanograde.
iii.ThecoursesuccessfullycompletedinAuditmodewillnotbeconsideredtowardstherequirementof
Minor/Honors.
iv.ThecoursesuccessfullycompletedinAuditmodewillbereflectedintheSemesterGradeReportandthe

4.7

RegistrationforPostgraduatelevelcourses

B.Tech.studentsbelongingtocategoryIandIIwithaCPI>6.5maybepermittedtoregisterforsomepost
graduatelevelcoursesascredit/auditcoursefromfifthsemesteronwards,iftheyarespecificallyofferedto
them.PriorpermissionoftheInstructorconcernedisrequiredforregistrationforthesecourses.However,no
relaxationintheCPIcriterionisallowed.
ThestudentsofDualDegree,4yearB.S.And5YearIntegratedM.Sc.programmes,fromthefifth
semesteronwards,arepermittedtoregisterforPGlevelelectivecourseswithoutanyrestrictions.
4.8GuidedStudy
GuidedStudyisdoingcoursesoutsidethecurriculumintheselfstudylikemode,duringaregularsemester.
AstudentbelongingtothestandingcategoryImaybeprovidedtheoptionofGuidedstudytoacquire
proficiencyinanareaofhis/herchoice,onrecommendationoftheFacultyAdviser/projectguide,DUGC
andapprovalofUGAPEC.GuidedStudywillbeavailabletotheextentofamaximumofonecourseper
semesterwitheffectfromthethirdsemester,subjecttoamaximumoffourcoursesintheentireprogramme.
Thisoptionisstrictlysubjecttotheavailabilityandwillingnessoftheinstructorofferingthecourse.Guided
StudyandURA(Sec.8)willnotrunconcurrently,andtherulesthatgovernoverloadingapplystrictlyeven
forthesecourses.ThesecoursescanbeconsideredtowardsMinor/Honors,ifsospecifiedbytheconcerned
academicunit.Registration,Examination/Evaluationandsubmissionofgradeetc.incaseofguidedstudy
willalsobegovernedinthesimilarwayasothercoursesofthecurriculum.
Theoptionofguidedstudymayalsobemadeavailable,bytheUGAPEC,inthefollowingsituations,ona
casebycasebasis:

(a)StudentswhomisstheDepartmentalIntroductoryCourseduetoachangeofbranchobtainedatthe
endofFirstyear,

(b)StudentswhoaretransferredfromotherIITsandasaresulthavetodocertainadditionalcourses.
4.9CourseSubstitution
IncaseastudentobtainsFR/DXgradesordropscoursesduetovalidreason,s/hemayliketosubstitute
coursesinordertocompletetherequirementswithinthestipulatedduration.Followingistheguidelinefor
coursesubstitution.:
i.
CoursesubstitutionisnotpermittedforCoreCourses,mayitbeaninstitutecorecourseor
departmentalcorecourse.Thestudenthastoreregisterthesamecourseandcompletethem.
ii.
AnInstituteelectivecoursemaybesubstitutedbyanotherInstituteelectivecoursefromthe
samegroup.
iii.
Adepartmentalelectivecoursemaybesubstitutedbyanotherdepartmentalelectivecourse
fromthesamegroup.
4.10
GuidelinesforSummerCourse(s)
Thesummersemesterisnot aregularsemester. However, duringasummer s e m e s t e r , anacademicentitymayoffer
asummer course toenable the students toclear theirbacklog coursesand/or regular credit courses,subject tostrict
adherencetothefollowingguidelines.

i) The course instructor/(s)/ faculty/(ies) should bewilling to offer the course. TheDUGC should
recommend offering of such a summer course for consideration and approval of the Dean of
AcademicProgrammes.Thecourse isofferedonapprovaloftheDeanofAcademicProgrammes.
ii) Thecourseisofferedwithadequaterigorandinthesamemannerasaregularsemestercourseisoffered.
iii) Theduration of thecourse is eight to tenweeks. Theregistration, examination, assessment andgrading
etc. are done inthesame wayas isdone forregularsemestercourses.Thetotalnumber ofcontacthoursfor
thecoursesremains thesameasthat duringtheregular semesters,andtherefore,thecoursesrunatanaccelerated
pace.(for example6hoursofinstructionsperweekisexpectedfora300course)TheAcademicCalendar
inthisconnectionisstrictlyfollowed.
iv) ThedroppingofaSummer Course ispermittedwithin7daysfromthefirstlectureofthecourse. Feeisnot
refundable.
v) Time slots will be assigned by or communicated to the Academic Office as for the regular semester
courses.
vi) Astudentcanregister forasummer course ifhe/she(a) hasabackloginthesamecourseOR (b)has3ormore
backlogsinothercoursesandthosecoursesarenotrunningassummer course.
vii) TheInstructors will awardaFR grade to students whofail to adhere to 80%attendance for thesummer
course.
viii)
Atleast05 students should register for thesummer course. The attendancerecordshouldbe
maintainedandtheminimumof80% attendanceiscompulsory.
ix) The number of credits registered by astudent for summer course can beupto a maximum of 18 credits
dependinguponthebacklog.
x) Courses offered in a summer term will be treated as equivalent to a regular semester courses for all
accountingpurposes.
5.EXAMINATION/ASSESSMENT
Semester wise performance assessment of every registered student is done through various modes of
examinations.Theseincludequizzes,classtests,homeassignments,groupassignments,vivavoce,Mid
Semester Examination and SemesterEnd Examination. The Instructor will announce the modes of
evaluationanddistributionofweightageforeachoftheassessmentsatthebeginningofthecourse.
Various modes of assessment for theory and laboratory courses along with the recommended relative
weightageofvariouscomponentsaregiveninthissection.Alargedeparturefromtherecommendedmodes
ofassessmentsandweightagewillrequirepriorapprovalfromtheDeanofAcademicProgrammes.
5.1Attendance
Attendanceintheclassiscompulsoryandismonitored.TheInstituteexpects100%attendance.However,
duetoillhealthorotheremergencysituations,absenceupto20%isconsideredoncasetocasebasison
productionofdocumentaryproof.Astudentnothaving80%attendancemaybedebarredfromappearingin
thesemesterendexaminationandgivenaDXgrade.Suchastudentisrequiredtoreregisterforthesame
courseinsubsequentsemesters.Theattendancerequirementisapplicabletosummercoursestoo.
5.2ModesofEvaluationforTheoryCourses
1. Various modes of assessment used for rating students performance in a theory course include
quizzes, class tests, home assignments, group assignments, vivavoce, midsemester test and
semesterendexamination.Relativeweightageforinsemesterevaluationsistypicallybetween50
and60percent.Thiswillconsistofonemidsemestertestoftwohoursduration,ofabout2530per
centweightage,tobeheldaspertheschedulefixedintheAcademicCalendar.Twoquizzesorone
quizandonetest alongwithassignmentsandvivavoceshallmakeuptherestoftheinsemester
assessment.TheInstructormayalsosetasideuptoamaximumof10percentoftheinsemester
marksforactiveparticipationintheclassandtheinitiativesshownbythestudent.Makeupforany
absence from insemester evaluations like midsem/tests/quizzes will be at the discretion of the
Instructor.Instructorneedstobeconvincedthatthereasonsforabsencearegenuine.

2. ThesemesterendexaminationwillbeheldaspertheAcademicCalendarandtherelativeweightage

forthiswouldbe40to50percent.Itisnormallyof3hoursdurationandwillcoverthefullsyllabus
ofthecourse. Thesemesterendexaminationismandatory.The instructorawardsanII
gradeforthosestudents notappearingfortheSemesterendexamination,iftheyhavesufficient
attendanceandsatisfactoryinsemesterperformance.SuchstudentsareeligibleforaSemesterend
reexaminationonlyonmedicalgrounds/validreasons(Sec.5.8),ANDonproductionofmedical
certificateissued/authenticatedbyCMO,IITBombayHospital,orothersupportingdocumentsas
thecaserequires.TheapplicationmustbesubmittedtotheAcademicOfficebeforethelastdatefor
registrationforsuchreexaminationannouncedintheAcademicCalendar.(SeealsoSec.5.7(V).
5.3ModesofEvaluationforLaboratoryCourses
Theassessmentinalaboratorycoursewillbebasedonturntoturnsupervisionofthestudentswork,her/his
performance in viva voce examinations and group discussions, the quality of their work as prescribed
throughlaboratoryjournalsandasemesterendtestthatcontainsanexperimentorawrittenexamination.In
semesterworkwillnormallycarry75%andthesemesterendtest25%weightagerespectively.Itisobligatory
tomaintainalaboratoryjournalasprescribedbythecourseinstructor.Finalexaminationforlaboratory
courseswillnormallybeheldaweekbeforethefinaltheoryexaminations.IncaseofabsencefromSemester
endexamination,thesamerulesasthosefortheorycoursesisapplicable.
5.4ModesofEvaluationforSeminars
Seminarsareevaluatedbasedonawrittenreport,andanoralpresentationbeforeapanelofexaminers
appointedbytheDUGC/Department.Thesupervisor/cosupervisor,wheninvolved,arepartofthepanel.
Gradescarryinggradepointsareawardedasinthecaseoftheoryandlaboratorycoursesbasedonthequality
ofthereportandperformanceinthepresentation.Theevaluationoftheseminarsiscompletedandthegrades
submittedtotheacademicoffice(oneweek)beforethecommencementoftheendsemesterexamination.
5.5ModesofEvaluationforProjects
Asdescribedinsection2,B.TechprojectisnotanInstituterequirement.However,somedepartmentsmay
makeitasthedepartmentrequirementforthedegree,andsomemightmakeitonlyasacomponentofthe
Honorsrequirement,whereasfor5YearIntegratedM.Sc.,DualDegreeand4YearB.S.programme,the
project is a required component for the award of degree. As the case may be, the separate modes of
assessmentarementionedhereunder.
5.5.1B.TechProject
B.Tech.ProjectmaybeofferedasoneunitasBTP,ortwoindependentunitsasBTPIandBTPII.Wherever
it is split into two units, BTP II builds on BTPI, and BTPI becomes a prerequisite for BTPII.
DepartmentsmayprescribeaminimumperformanceinBTPI(whichmaybehigherthanthepassgrade
DD)forbeingeligibleforBTPII.BTPIandBTPIIareseparatelygraded,attheendoftherespective
semesters.
Theseprojects are supervised, and needregular interaction (at least once a week) withthe supervisor.
Student has to submit a project report and defend it in front of a panel of examiners. The dates for
submissionofreports,thedatesforpresentations,anddetailsofmodeofassessmentaredecidedbythe
individualdepartments.ThegradesaresenttotheAcademicofficebeforethelastdateforsubmissionof
grades.
Incaseofirregularityofinteractions,thesupervisormayawardanFRgradebeforethelastdatefor
submissionofthereport.AnIIgrademaybeawardedifthestudentmissesthepresentation.S/heis
grantedasecondchanceforpresentation,ifthebasisforabsenceisvalidandtheconditionsspecifiedin
Sec.5.2arecompliedwith.
5.5.2DualDegreeProjects

a)ThefollowingistheschedulefortheDDPassessments:

respective department on or just before one week from the date of assessment as specified in the

Dissertationreportstotherespectivedepartmentsonorbeforeoneweekfromthedatespecifiedinthe
AcademicCalendar.TheevaluationwillbedonebyaBoardofExaminersbasedonthereportandaviva
voce.Thevivavocewillbeconductedbytheparentdepartment.FinalGradereportsaretobesentbythe
DepartmenttotheAcademicSectiononcompletionofthevivavoce,asperthedatespecifiedinthe
AcademicCalendar.
d)TheBoardofExaminersforDDPstageIIassessmentisappointedbytheConvener,DUGC,andwill
consistofthefollowing:
1. AProfessororanAssociateProfessoroftheInstituteasChairperson.TheChairpersonshouldbe
fromaDepartment/IDPGroup/Center/Schoolotherthantheparentdepartmentofthestudent.
2. Thesupervisor(s)orintheirabsenceanotherfacultymemberofthedepartmentconversantwiththe
subject.

5 Year Integrated M.Sc., 4 year B.S. project work is normally done in two stages, each spread over a
semester.Attheendofthefirststage,thestudentisrequiredtosubmitapreliminaryreportofhisworkbya
prescribedduedatetothecoordinatorandpresentittoaPanelofExaminers.Thesecondstageofthework
iscontinuedinthefollowingsemester.
Submissionofthe5YearIntegratedM.Sc.,4yearB.S.projectcannotbepostponedbeyondthedatespecified
inthecalendar.Iftheprojectcannotbecompletedduetoillhealthorotherbonafidereasons,thecoursecan
bedroppedinconsultationwiththeFacultyAdviser,theprojectcoordinatorandtheguideonorbeforethe
lastdatefordroppingofcourses. Areregistrationforthesameisrequiredinthefollowingsemesterin

performance evaluation in the course, reserved specifically for attendance and/or class participation.
Penalties inattendance and/or class participation should be reflected onlyinthis component of student
performanceevaluation.Thepercentageweightforthis'ClassParticipation'Componentshouldrangefrom0
to 20 percent. Assigning a zero percent weight for Class Participation automatically implied the earlier
OptionIwheretherewasnopenaltyforshortfallinattendance.ThisOptionshouldbeadministeredbythe
instructorhimself/herself.
Attendance in classes is expected from the very beginning of the semester. The student would be de
registeredfromthosecoursesinwhichtheywereabsentinanyoneofthefirstthreelectures.

v. II isawardedinalecture/laboratorycourseifastudenthassatisfactoryinsemesterperformanceand
hasfulfilledthe80%attendancerequirement,buthasnotappearedforthesemesterendexaminationdue
tomedicalreasons.SuchstudentsareeligibleforamakeupfortheSemesterendexaminationonlyon
medicalgrounds/validreasonsANDonproductionofmedicalcertificateissued/authenticatedby
CMO, IIT Bombay Hospital or other supporting documents as required. The application must be
submittedtotheAcademicOffice,forconsiderationbyUGAPEC,beforethelastdateforregistrationfor
suchmakeupexaminationannouncedintheAcademicCalendar.(SeeSec.3.5and3.6forfulldetails).
Forastudentpresentinthesemesterendreexamination,theinstructorwillawardaregularperformance
grade(APFR)dependingontheoverallperformanceinthecourseincludingthereexamination.Ifa
studentfailstoappearforthereexaminationtoo,theinstructorwillawardFRgradeagain. Ifthe
absenceisduetomedical/validreasonsforreexam,thestudentmustsubmitsupportingdocumentsas
mentionedabove, within seven days of the scheduled date of the reexam, to the Academic Office.
UGAPECwillexaminesuchcasesandconverttheIIgradeintoadroppedcoursestatus(DR).Inall
other cases the IIgradewill beconverted to FR grade. Inanycase the II grade will not be
continuedbeyondthecommencementofthesubsequentsemester.
vi.Thereare,however,afewotheracademicrequirementsfortheprogrammes.Thefollowingtwogrades
viz., PP (Pass) and NP (Not pass), will be awarded for NCC/NSO/NSS. No grade points are
associatedwiththesegradesandperformanceinthesecoursesisnottakenintoaccountinthecalculation
oftheperformanceindices(SPI,CPI).However,theawardofthedegreeissubjecttoobtainingaPP
(Pass)gradeinallsuchcourses.AstudentwillbeawardedPP(Pass)/NP(NotPass)gradeforNCC/
NSO/NSSineachsemesterprovidedtheminimumrequirementoftheseactivitiesaremetduringthat
semester together with 80% minimum attendance, failing which the NP (Not Pass) grade will be
awarded.
viiAUgradesareawardedforthosewhohaveauditedacourse,andadequateexposuretothecontents.No
gradepointsareassociatedwiththisgrade.IthasnoimplicationonCPI/SPI.Nogradeisawardedincase
ofinsufficientexposuretothecontentsofthecourse.

Validreasonsforsemesterendmakeupexamination

Followingmaybeconsideredasvalidreasonsforsemesterendmakeupexamination:

1.SeriousIllness/personalaccidentinthecaseofthestudentherself/himself.
2.Seriousillness/Accident/Deathofparent/guardian
3.Logisticproblemssuchasnonavailabilityofresources/lab.facilities/nonavailabilityofexaminer/(s)
forproject/seminarsetc.
Students claiming semesterend re examination(evaluationinthe case of projects) onthe above valid
reasons are required to make suitable application to the UGAPEC before the prescribed last date for
registrationforsuchreexaminationannouncedintheAcademicCalendar,throughproperchannelalong
withpropermedicalcertificateissued/authenticatedbyCMO,IITBombayHospital.Intheeventofdeath
and/orseriousillness/accidentofparentorguardian,theapplicationshouldbesupportedbyadequate
evidenceofthesame/appropriatedocuments.Decisionoftheconvener,UGAPECisfinalinthesematters.
5.8AcademicMalpractice:
Academicmalpracticesareseverelydealtwith.Incaseofmalpracticeduringanyofthevaluationslike
assignments, quizzes, tests, and examinations, the instructor can award a FR grade in the course
immediatelyonoccurrenceandreportthemattertotheDeanofAcademicProgrammes,throughDUGC.If
theDean(AP)findsthattheoffenceisseriousenough,s/hemayfurtherreferthemattertotheAcademic
DisciplinaryActionCommittee(ADAC).
5.9SPI/CPI
5.9.1SemesterPerformanceIndex(SPI)
TheperformanceofastudentinasemesterisindicatedbyanumbercalledSemesterPerformanceIndex,
SPI.TheSPIistheweightedaverageofthegradepointsobtainedinallthecoursesregisteredbythestudent
duringthesemester.Forexample,ifastudentpassesfivecourses(Theory/labs./Projects/Seminaretc.)ina
semesterwithcreditsC1,C2,C3,C4andC5andher/hisgradepointsinthesecoursesareg1,g2,g3,g4and

Anuptodateassessmentoftheoverallperformanceofastudentfromthetimes/heenteredtheInstituteis
obtainedbycalculatinganumbercalledtheCumulativePerformanceIndex,CPI,inamannersimilartothe
calculation of SPI. The CPI therefore considers all the courses registered by the student, towards the
minimum requirement of thedegrees/hehas enrolledfor, since s/he entered the Institute. The CPI is
calculatedattheendofeverysemestertotwodecimalplacesandisindicatedinsemestergradereports.
TheCPIwillreflectthefailedstatusincaseofFRgrade(s),tillthecourse(s)is/arecleared.Whenthe
course(s)is/areclearedbyobtainingapassgradeonsubsequentregistration(s)theCPIwillonly
reflectthenewgradeandnotthefailgradesearnedearlier.

conveyingtotheirparentsaswell,andhence,thereisnoneedtoissuethehardcopiesanddophotocopyof
SemesterGradeReports.
5.9.4Transcript:ConsolidatedStatementofAcademicPerformance
TranscriptistheconsolidatedstatementoftheAcademicPerformanceofastudentforallthesemesterssince
joiningtheprogrammeandisgiventoastudentonsuccessfulcompletionoftheprogrammealongwiththe
degreecertificate.Forthosestudentswhohavetakenmultipleattemptstoclearacourse,thetranscriptgiven
onsuccessfulcompletionoftheprogrammewillonlycontainearnedpassgrade(APDD,PP);thecourse
willhoweverbeshowninthesemesterinwhichthestudenthasfinallyclearedthecourse.Thetranscriptwill
showonlytheoverallCPIbasedonallthecoursestakenbythestudent.Additionalcourseswillbeshown
separately, indicating also the minor / honors, if any, earned by the student. Additional copies of the
transcriptcanbeobtainedifneeded,onrequestanduponpaymentofapplicablefee.
Students who havenot yet completedtheprogramme canobtainan Interim Transcript, if needed, on
requestanduponpaymentofapplicablefee.TheInterimTranscriptincludesfailedcourseswhichhavenot
beenclearedatthetimeofissue.
5.10DisplayofInsemesterPerformance
i. Insemesterperformanceofallstudentsiscommunicatedbytheinstructortothestudentsbefore the
endsemesterexamination. ThoseawardedDXgradesasdescribedin5.7(iv)above willbe clearly
identifiedinthislist.

ii.Basedontheinsemesterperformance,theinstructormayalsodecideandpublishacutoff(basedon

the average performance of the class), below which the insemester performance is considered
Unsatisfactory.ThiswillbethebasisonwhichaninstructormaydeclareaFRgradeevenwhena
studentisabsentfortheendsemesterexaminationonvalidgrounds.

Sufficient care is taken while evaluation of answer scripts. There is no provision of re evaluation of
evaluatedanswerscripts.Howeverthereisaprovisionforrequestingaretotalingofmarksintheevaluated
answerscriptsonpaymentofRs.200/percourse.SuchrequestswillbeprocessedbytheAcademicOffice.

On successful completion of the prescribed requirements for a programme (B.Tech.; 4 year B.S.; Dual
Degree(B.Tech.andM.Tech.)),therequireddegreewillbeconferredonastudentinanannualconvocation
oftheInstitute.
Thedegreecertificatewillindicatetherelevantbranch,andspecializationsifany,intheengineeringor
science discipline in which the student has graduated. For example: Bachelor of Technology in Civil
Engineering,MasterofScienceinChemistry,orBachelorofTechnologyinElectrical Engineeringand
MasterofTechnologyinElectricalEngineeringwithSpecializationinMicroelectronics.
InthosecaseswherethestudenthasearnedtherequiredcreditsforanHonorsinher/hisdisciplineoraMinor
inanotherdisciplinewithinthestipulatedtime,thiswillbementionedinthedegreecertificate:forexample:

7.2AwardofMedals
A medal be awarded to a student only if he/ she has completed at least thirty credits beyond the
mandatorycoursecreditrequirementinthatdiscipline.

ForthePresidentofIndiaMedalandtheInstituteGoldMedal,thetotalgradepoints(overalltotalof
CreditsmultipliedbyGradePoints)forthatstudentshallbeconsidered.Thestudent(s)withthehighesttotal
gradepointsandnoacademicirregularitiesduringtheProgramme(underloading,failedmandatorycourses,
andsoon)shallbeconsideredfortheawardofthePresidentofIndiaMedal/InstituteGoldMedal.Incase
ofatie,theperformanceof(a)student(s)withalargernumberofcreditscompleted,wouldbedeemedtobe
superior.Incaseofatieeventhen,aperformancewhereanHonoursand/orMinoriscompletedwouldbe
deemedsuperior.
An Institute Silver Medal would be awarded in each discipline, irrespective of the recipient of the
PresidentofIndiaMedal.FortheInstituteSilverMedal,onlystudent(s)whohavecompetedHonoursinthat
discipline and have no academic irregularities during the Programme (underloading, failed mandatory
courses,andsoon)wouldbeconsidered.Thestudent(s)ineachdisciplinewiththehighestCPI,calculated
basedonlyonthemandatoryplushonours creditrequirementwouldbeconsideredfortheawardofthe
Institute Silver Medal in that discipline. For Dual Degree students, since completing the Honours
requirementismandatory,thetermCPI,calculatedbasedonlyonthe mandatoryplushonours credit
requirementbeinterpretedasCPI,calculatedbasedonlyontheDualDegreecreditrequirement.
7.3Earlytermination
GiventhatsomeofthebesttalentsinthecountrytakeadmissionatthisInstitute,itisexpectedthatallof
themperformverywell,andfullyutilizethevariousopportunitiesprovidedfortheiracademicadvancement.
However,inafewcases,studentsareunabletocopewiththestudieshere.Thismayoftenbeduetoalackof
aptitudeoramismatchbetweenthestudentsinterestandwhattheprogrammesprovide.Earlyrecognitionof
thistendencypermitscorrectiveactiontobetakenintime,andthestudentstopursuetheircareerselsewhere.
UGAPEC,therefore,willrecommendearlyterminationofstudentshipinthefollowingsituations

1.DuringthefirstandSecondyear
StudentshavingfiveormoreFRand/orDX
gradesattheendofeachsemester(aftertaking
intoaccountthegradesobtainedinthesemesterendreexamination,ifapplicable)

2.DuringtheThirdandsubsequentyears.
StudentsarehavingsevenormoreFRand/orDXgrades,attheendofeachsemester(aftertakinginto
accountthegradesobtainedinthesemesterendreexamination,ifapplicable)
7.4EarlyexitforpoorlyperformingDualDegreestudents
EarlyexitsforpoorlyperformingDualDegreestudentsispermittedaftertheninthsemester,iftheCPI
uptothatpointisbelow(5.00)aprescribedlimit.AfewstudentsintheDualDegreeProgrammesindicate
inability/disinclinationtocompletetheDualDegreeProgrammeforvariousreasonsandseekanexitwith
only a B. Tech. Degree. This is also what the supervisors/ faculty advisers recommend based on their
observationofthestudent.
Ifagivendepartment/academicunit,throughdeliberationintheDUGC,findsthataparticularstudent,
irrespectiveofacademicperformance,isunlikelytocompletetherequirementsoftheDualDegree(B.Tech.
+M.Tech.)satisfactorilythenitmayrecommendtotheUGAPECthatthestudentbepermittedtoexitwith
onlytheB.Tech.Degreebutwiththefollowingmandatoryclauses:

(i)TheacademicrequirementsoftheB.Tech.Degreemustbecompleted.
(ii)Thestudentshallexitonlyaftertheninthsemesteroftheprogrammemeaningthatthereisatleastone
semesteroftimepenaltyimposedforthisexit.(thispenaltyisapplicableeventodate).
(iii)Inthenewcurriculum,thestudentshallbeawarded only theB.Tech.Degree,andnotHonoursor
Minor(s).
(iv)The transcript giventothestudentalongwiththedegreewouldmentionthat thestudenthadbeen
admittedtotheDualDegreeProgramme,butwasawardedaB.Tech.Degreeasanexitoption,dueto
inabilitytocompletetheDualDegreeProgramme.Ofcourse,thedegreewouldnotmentionanythingof
thekind.

UNDERGRADUATERESEARCHAWARDS(URA)

Somestudentsmayhaveaninclinationtowardsresearch.TheUndergraduateResearchAwards(URA)is
designedforsuchstudents.URAwillbeavailableatthreelevels,allofthemindependentofeachother.They
willcarrycodessimilartocoursecodessothattheycanbelistedingradereports.
URA01:forpreliminaryresearch/developmentalexperience
URA02:forB.Tech.LevelResearchProject.
URA03:forDualDegreeLevelResearchProject
URA01:Thisisarecognitionofasmallresearch/developmentaleffort,successfullycompletedbyastudent
inthefirst,secondorthirdyearofanundergraduateprogrammethatis,aB.Tech.,4yearB.S.oraDual
DegreeProgramme.AfacultymembermustagreetosupervisethestudentfortheURA01project.The
studentworkswiththisfacultymember,withtheapprovaloftheDUGC,forfourtosixmonthduration
includingthesummerorwintervacations.Noformalregistrationisrequiredwiththeacademicofficeatthis
stage.Ifthefacultymemberissatisfiedwiththequantumandqualityofworkdone,atanystage,s/hemay
recommendtheawardofURA01tothestudent,whichwillthenbelistedinthegradecardofthestudentin
thesemesterimmediatelyfollowingthesemesterinwhichthisawardwasrecommended.Nocreditsare
assignedtoURA01.URA01canbeawardedonlyoncetoastudent.ThegradeforURA01willbePP.
URA02:Thisistobetreatedasrecognitionoftrulyexceptionalwork,bothinqualityandinextent,donein
theB.Tech.Project.IfthecommitteeevaluatingtheB.Tech.ProjectofaB.Tech.studentbelievesthatthe
student has carried out truly exceptional work in the B. Tech. Project and the quantum of work is
substantiallyhigherthanwhatisexpected,itmayrecommendthattwomorefacultymembers,otherthan
thosewhoalreadyparticipatedinthecommitteeforevaluation,dulychosenbytheDUGC,examinethe
workdoneandevaluatewhetheraURA02canbeawardedtothestudentinadditiontotheAAgradealready
given.Ajointrecommendationmustthenbemadebyall:theoriginalcommitteeofevaluationandthesetwo
otherfacultymembersthatthisstudentbeawardedURA02,dulyroutedthroughtheConvener,DUGCtothe
Convener,UGAPEC.Thisaward,onapprovalbytheUGAPEC,willbementionedonthegradereportofthe
student as URA02 carrying six credits and the grade AA. No formal registration is required with the
academicoffice.Theadvantagetothestudentwouldbethathis/herCPIwouldimprove,giventhatthese
creditsarewithanAAgrade.
URA03(forB.Tech.):Thesearetobetreatedasrecognitionoftrulyexceptionalwork,bothinqualityand
inextent,intheDualDegreeProject.IfthecommitteeevaluatingtheFinalStageoftheDualDegreeProject
ofagivenDualDegreestudentbelievesthatthestudenthascarriedouttrulyexceptionalworkandthe
quantumofworkissubstantiallyhigherthanwhatisexpected,itmayrecommendthattwomorefaculty
members,otherthanthosewhoalreadyparticipatedinthecommitteeforevaluation,dulychosenbythe
DUGC,examinetheworkdoneandevaluatewhetheraURA03canbeawardedtothestudentinadditionto
theAAgradealreadygiven.Ajointrecommendationmustthenbemadebyall:theoriginalcommitteeof
evaluationandthesetwootherfacultymembersthatthisstudentbeawardedURA03,dulyroutedthrough
the Convener, DUGC to the Convener, UGAPEC. This award, on approval by the UGAPEC, will be

mentionedonthegradereportofthestudentasURA03carryingsixcreditsandthegradeAA.Noformal

9AcademicRehabilitationProgramme(ARP)
AcademicRehabilitationProgram(ARP)dealswithstudentswhoareunabletocopeupwiththeacademic
pressureandhavebeenperformingpoorly.Itactsasabufferforsuchstudentsandprovidesthemwithan
opportunitytostayinIITforcompletionoftheirdegree.Studentshaving5and7backlogsattheendoffirst
yearandsecondyearsonwardsrespectivelytransferredtoARP.Suchstudentsarerequiredtoregisteredthe
coursesmanuallywithlowcreditinconsultationwiththeARPConvener.Eachdepartmentwouldconsistof
oneormorefacultycoordinatorswhowouldberesponsiblefordealingwitheachoftheARPstudents.
IfthestudentsperformswellinhisARPtime,heistransferredbacktothenormalcurriculumload.Incasea
studentfailstoperforminARP,he/sheisrecommendedforterminationfromtheinstitute.
10Helpingweakerstudents
Thestudentswithbacklogsarerequiredtoregistermanually.Thiswillrequirethemtomeetanddiscusstheir
performancewiththeFacultyAdviser.Thestudentswithbacklogsshouldcontinuouslyseekhelpfromthe
Faculty Adviser, the student counselor, the student mentors, and the DUGC concerned and keep their
parents/guardiansinformedabouttheirperformance.Attheendofeachsemester,theInstitutewillalsosend
semestergradereportofthestudents/warningletterforpoorperformanceetc.asdirectedbytheUGAPEC
(ifrequired)totheirparents/guardiansbyordinarypost.Itisexpectedthattheparents/guardians,especially
inthecaseofstudentswithbacklogs,stayinconstanttouchwiththeFacultyAdvisersandifnecessary,the
studentcounselor,andkeepthemselvesabreastoftheirwardsprogress.

beenawardedaprojectgradeequaltoorgreaterthanBCforthethirdstageprojectexamination,
willbeeligibletocontinuetoPh.D.programme,providedtheyarewillingtocontinueforthesame.
