Unit I Introduction
Open loop and Closed loop systems Examples, Control system components. Transfer function
of physical systems Mechanical systems, Translational and Rotational systems, Electrical
network, Thermal and hydraulic systems. Transfer function of DC Generator, DC servomotor,
AC servomotor and Synchros , Transfer function of overall systems. Impulse Transfer function.
Block diagram - reduction techniques. Signal flow graphs Mason gain formula.
Unit II Time Response Analysis
Standard Test signals Time response of zero, first and second order system, Performance
criteria, Type of systems. Steady state error constants position, velocity and acceleration error
constants. Generalized error series Feedback characteristics of control systems. Controllers P,
PI and PID control modes.
Unit III Frequency Response Analysis
Frequency domain specifications peak resonance, resonant frequency, bandwidth and cut-off
rate, correlation between time and frequency responses for second order systems. Polar plot,
Bode plot Gain Margin and Phase Margin.
Unit IV Stability of Systems
Characteristic equation Location of roots of characteristic equation Absolute stability and
Relative stability. Routh Hurwitz criterion of stability Necessary and sufficient conditions.
Nyquist Stability- Principle of argument Nyquist path Nyquist stability criterion
Determination of Nyquist stability Assessment of relative stability. Bode Plot Assessment of
stability. Root locus concept, Rules for construction of root loci, problems, stability analysis.
Unit V State Variable Analysis
Introduction to state space analysis Physical variable, Phase variable and Canonical variables
forms. Transfer function from state space representation.
