To connect the machinery and plant made by different manufacturers, Bosch Rexroth has developed a new software concept.
And connectivity is at the focus of other activities, with smart
home concepts becoming increasingly popular among the public. In these concepts, Bosch sensors feature in systems such
as those used to check that windows and doors are secure.
Boilers can also be connected with the rest of the house, and
controlled remotely by smartphone or tablet, thanks to apps
developed by Bosch. 18-volt lithium-ion rechargeable batteries
for power tools have also been modified further. Thanks to
Smart Li-ion+ control electronics, only the required amount
of power is actually used. The Indego robot lawnmower is one
of the appliances to feature such a system.

In fiscal 2013, the Industrial Technology business sector generated roughly 15 percent of total Bosch Group sales. The business sector includes the Drive and Control Technology division,
a globally operating supplier for the mechanical engineering
sector, with hydraulic components for mobile machinery, drive
and control solutions for industrial applications, and components and systems for wind turbines. The Packaging Technology
division provides integrated packaging and process engineering
solutions, above all for the pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food,
and confectionery industries.

The Consumer Goods business sector contributed some 9 percent of total Bosch Group sales in 2013. The business sectors
products include the professional and DIY tools made by the
Power Tools division. Products also include those made by
the BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgerte GmbH joint venture,
which range from ovens, to fridge-freezers and washing
machines, to coffee-makers. Since 2013, however, these sales
have no longer been disclosed in the consolidated financial
statements.

In 2013, the Bosch Group was able to improve its sales and
result, despite a weak economic environment. This accomplishment was due partly to innovative products in all business
sectors, and partly to a rigorous focus on optimizing costs. The
Automotive Technology business sector was particularly successful, while Industrial Technology was severely impacted by
the difficult environment in the mechanical engineering industry.
In addition, important strategic groundwork was laid. This
included developing the new Energy and Building Technology
business sector, realigning the battery businesses for electric
cars, and increasingly taking advantage of the potential for
connecting products and services over the internet. Bosch also
withdrew from the crystalline photovoltaics business.
The change in the way the Bosch Groups fifty-fifty joint ventures are consolidated also had a substantial impact on the way
figures are presented. They are no longer included on a pro-rata
basis in the consolidated financial statements using the proportionate consolidation method, but instead are recognized using
the equity method, i.e. their pro-rata share of equity is reported
on the balance sheet and their after-tax income is reported in
operating profit. The 2012 data have been adjusted accordingly.

On the basis of these trends, and guided by its strategic imperative Invented for life, the Bosch Group aims to provide
beneficial technology whose functions and design also spark
enthusiasm among customers. To be able to finance these objectives, the companys long-term target is annual sales growth of
8 percent. The corresponding EBIT margin is also 8 percent.

projects. The Du hast die Macht (you have the power) internet
platform has been a successful part of the program for four
years. It kindles young peoples interest in political issues. The
Robert Bosch Stiftungs German School Prize has showcased
innovation for many years now. Last year, it was once again
presented by Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel.
For ten years, research grants have been awarded to authors,
and translators have received support for their work of making
literature accessible to other cultures. The assistants program
that encourages exchange between China, eastern Europe, and
Germany has now existed for 20 years.
