Innovations

The innovative strength of the Bosch

Group is a decisive asset, and will remain so in the future. At Bosch, the main
drivers of innovation are resourceful and highly
committed engineers, a high-performance yet efficient
research organization, and a historical background that is
both an inspiration and an obligation, driving the company
on to further outstanding achievements. Increasing connectivity over the internet is leading to far-reaching changes,
making innovative products, services, and business models
possible. For this reason, all Bosch business sectors are
systematically promoting connectivity. In all that Bosch
does, every product it offers will be Invented for life.

Efficiency systems:
BRS boost recuperation system

In the Automotive Technology business sector, the combination

of improved injection systems and turbocharged downsized
engines will reduce the consumption of gasoline and diesel
engines by a further 20 percent from their 2012 levels by 2020.
A number of innovations will also play a role here. One of them
is the BRS boost recuperation system. This entry-level hybrid
supports the combustion engine with additional torque. It
also offers a fuel-saving coasting function. This shuts off the
internal-combustion engine for up to 30 percent of the driving
time. In the area of battery technology, a new development
alliance has been agreed with GS Yuasa International Ltd.
and Mitsubishi Corporation. Its aim is to develop the next
generation of high-power lithium-ion rechargeable batteries
for electric vehicles.

Smart homes:
smartphone and
tablet apps

To connect the machinery and plant made by different manufacturers, Bosch Rexroth has developed a new software concept.
And connectivity is at the focus of other activities, with smart
home concepts becoming increasingly popular among the public. In these concepts, Bosch sensors feature in systems such
as those used to check that windows and doors are secure.
Boilers can also be connected with the rest of the house, and
controlled remotely by smartphone or tablet, thanks to apps
developed by Bosch. 18-volt lithium-ion rechargeable batteries
for power tools have also been modified further. Thanks to
Smart Li-ion+ control electronics, only the required amount
of power is actually used. The Indego robot lawnmower is one
of the appliances to feature such a system.

In 2013, the Bosch Group was able to improve its sales and
result, despite a weak economic environment. This accomplishment was due partly to innovative products in all business
sectors, and partly to a rigorous focus on optimizing costs. The
Automotive Technology business sector was particularly successful, while Industrial Technology was severely impacted by
the difficult environment in the mechanical engineering industry.
In addition, important strategic groundwork was laid. This
included developing the new Energy and Building Technology
business sector, realigning the battery businesses for electric
cars, and increasingly taking advantage of the potential for
connecting products and services over the internet. Bosch also
withdrew from the crystalline photovoltaics business.
The change in the way the Bosch Groups fifty-fifty joint ventures are consolidated also had a substantial impact on the way
figures are presented. They are no longer included on a pro-rata
basis in the consolidated financial statements using the proportionate consolidation method, but instead are recognized using
the equity method, i.e. their pro-rata share of equity is reported
on the balance sheet and their after-tax income is reported in
operating profit. The 2012 data have been adjusted accordingly.

20

Bosch today 2014

Despite a market environment that remained difficult, Bosch

was able to increase its sales in Europe by 2 percent, to
25.5 billion euros. In Asia Pacific, sales rose to 11.1 billion
euros an increase of 5 percent. Following a steep decrease
in the previous year, the company significantly slowed its negative development in South America. In fiscal 2013, sales fell by
just 3 percent. In North America, sales grew by 3 percent to
7.8 billion euros.
Worldwide, the Bosch Group employed some 281,000 men and
women in 2013. Compared with the previous year, this was an
increase of 8,500. The biggest change in associate numbers
took place in Asia Pacific, where they rose by 7,800 to 73,000.
In the Americas, headcount rose by just under 1,000 to 34,000.
In Europe, headcount remained more or less stable at 174,000,
while in Germany it fell slightly to 107,000.
In its growth strategy, the Bosch Group is guided by the main
megatrends. For example, the company is continuing to expand
its business internationally, especially in Asia. Africa will also
gain in importance. In all business sectors, the growing need
to conserve resources, protect the environment, and increase
energy efficiency is highly important both in terms of the Bosch
Groups products and services as well as within the company
itself. One further trend is increasing urbanization, which holds
many challenges for mobility, security, and environmental protection. The increasing connectivity of things and services over
the internet is also leading to fundamental changes in society.

Sustainability at Bosch

Bosch invested some 185 million euros in associate training

in 2013. On average, every one of its associates attended 1.6
classroom training courses. In addition, associates completed
240,000 web-based training courses.

Acting sustainably is a company value that was already very

important for the company founder Robert Bosch. Global
challenges such as climate change, finite resources, and global social standards underline how important this focus on
sustainability is. To monitor and constantly improve on the
success of this strategy, Bosch has defined group-wide targets
for more sustainability. Above all, these performance indicators
focus on the well-being of the companys workforce and the
environmental impact of its operations.
With respect to its workforce, the Bosch Group is committed
to providing a work environment that is safe and encourages
associates to give their best. For example, the company has
reduced the rate of job-related accidents per million hours
worked by 48 percent since 2007. The figure now stands at 3.6.

The Bosch Group wants its products to be sustainable when

it comes both to their use and their manufacture. Since 2007,
the company has reduced its annual energy requirements by
8.3 percent. They currently stand at 6,218 gigawatt-hours. At
the same time, Bosch has reduced its annual absolute CO2
emissions by 2.0 percent to 2.485 million metric tons. Over
the same period, relative CO2 emissions have been reduced by
16 percent. Boschs target for 2020 is a 20 percent reduction
from 2007 levels.
Furthermore, the company remains committed to the principles
of social entrepreneurship evinced by its founder Robert Bosch.
In 2013, Bosch donated 10.5 million euros for civic initiatives.
