BLACKWATER
Additional cooling for generator guide bearing (DE-brg.).
To provide additional cooling for the drive-end bearing (Zollern) of the Hitzinger generators, the following suggestion might be the least effort. Because the turbine guide
bearing lubrication seams well dimensioned (very low turbine bearing temperatures), we suggest to tap-off the oil circulation for the DE-brg. from the supply line (Ø = 20
mm) which feeds the turbine bearing. The return line (drain) from the DE-brg. should feed directly into the Hacker lube oil tank – a connection with G 1½” shall be
provided (above max. oil level). A ball valve (item no. 3) shall be used to regulate/control the oil flow to the DE-brg. and subsequently somehow the temperatures in
both bearings (turbine and generator). All piping can be done with screw fittings, thus no bending and welding tools are required. The list of parts (item no. 1-8 plus
pipes) will be obtained and sent to Sri Lanka with the next possible shipment. Pipes will be in stainless steel

Schematic: Pipe connections at the Zollern Bearing:

According to Hitzinger calculations,

the bearing temperature at various
oil flows shall be (approx.) :

62,5 0C with 2,0 l/min Lube oil inlet

(d 5 = G 1 /2 “)
58,9 0C with 3,0 l/min
57,5 0C with 4,0 l/min

These are theoretical temperatures.

The theoretical temperature without
external cooling was 75 0C. The
“additional” temperature is
transferred from the generator shaft.
Thus we should expect a bearing Lube oil drain
temperature of 75 0C at full load with (d 7 = G 2“)
approx. 3,0 l/min oil flow.
