GUIDELINE ON WRITING OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING REPORT

1.0

INTRODUCTION
The purpose of industrial training is to expose students to pre-professional work
experience with specific assignments and responsibilities in related industry. Through
this exposure, students will be able to apply the theories and skills learned at university
to solve real problem in organization in order to improve their marketability after
graduation.

Industrial training is part of the learning process and therefore, the

knowledge, experience and skills gained needs to be documented properly in the form
of a report. Industrial training report in this guideline refers to a documented report of
the training and experience undergone by a student in partial fulfillment of the
requirements for a bachelor degree. This guideline is developed to help students to
prepare an organised, accurate and interesting industrial training report. Students are
expected to include the following contents and to follow formats of preparing Final
Project Thesis such as guided in UMP Thesis Guide.
2.0

CONTENTS OF REPORT
The report should contain the items listed below and is to be presented in the manner
and order listed.
2.1

Front Cover

Front cover must be in capital letters and contain information listed in the following
order:

Industrial training report

Company name and address

Students full name

Students ID

Programme name

Faculty name

2.3 Students Declaration Page


This page contains the declaration of the student on the originality of his/her work by
stating the following statement:
I hereby declare that the work of this industrial training report is my own except for
quotations and summaries which have been duly acknowledged.
This page must be endorsed and signed by the student (please refer to format shown in
UMP Thesis Guide, page 62).

Acknowledgement Page

This page conveys appreciation to those who have been involved in the preparation of
the report (please refer to format shown in UMP Thesis Guide, page 64).

Table of Contents

The Table of Contents lists the chapters, topics and sub-topics together with their page
numbers (please refer to format shown in UMP Thesis Guide, page 67).

List of Tables

This list contains the titles of tables, together with their page numbers, which are listed in
the text (please refer to format shown in UMP Thesis Guide, page 69).

Body of the report

The report should consist of the following chapters:


Chapter 1: Introduction
This chapter outlines the objective of industrial training. You may also state the reason
why you have chosen this specific company. The expectations about the training you
had before you started your training together with your Gantt Chart. You could also
include the road map to the chapters of the report.
Chapter 2: Company Background
In general, this chapter describes the organization or company. The chapter should
include the following information but not limited to:
1.

Company background and nature

2.

Company vision and mission

3.

Organizational chart

4.

Range of products/services offered

5.

Production/service delivery processes

Chapter 3: Training Summary


This chapter describes the roles, functions, tasks and projects/assignments assigned by
company during the training. The chapter should include the following information but
not limited to:
1.

Summary of departments/divisions attached and job scopes

2.

Detail reports of tasks/projects/assignments carried out (include the theoretical and


practical parts where appropriate)

Relevant documents should be attached to support your works such as pictures,


images, manual extractions etc.

Chapter 4: Conclusion and Recommendations
In this chapter, students must conclude the overall training experience and describe how
well the tasks set have been achieved. The chapter should include the following
information but not limited to:
1.

Summaries of overall training experience

2.

Limitations/problems/challenges encountered

3.

Recommendations of solutions/actions taken to solve the problems

4.

New concepts, information and knowledge gained

References

The reference writing should follow the Author-Year/Harvard System (please refer to
format shown in UMP Thesis Guide, page 26).

Appendices

LENGTH OF REPORT
The length of the report is not specific but the ideal length is 30 40 pages (body of the
report).

4.0

OTHER FORMATS OF REPORT


The format of the report such as font type, font size, line spacing, margins etc. should
follow formats of preparing Final Project Thesis such as guided in UMP Thesis Guide.

5.0

PRINTING AND BINDING OF REPORT


A high quality laser-jet printer should be used for the printing of front cover and body of
the report on A4 standard white papers.
The TWO (2) copies of the report (together with TWO (2) copies of CD) should be SOFT
BOUND (press-bind). The first copy is for your University Supervisor and the second
copy is for your Industrial Supervisor. Both copies are not returnable.

CONCLUSION
Through the Industrial Training, students will not only gain the exposure and experience
from the industry, but will also able to prepare a good report. It is hoped that students
will be benefited by these general guidelines and to meet the minimal format
requirements set by the faculty to complete the Industrial Training and the Industrial
Training Report.
