Q & R (Quotation & Response)

Book Title: ______________________________

Sometimes you know you really like part of a book, and sometimes you know your really dont.
Sometimes what you read really made you think, but you may not be sure exactly why. Q &
Rs are meant to help you explore the central concepts and theme found in the book and your
reactions to them.
Instructions:
1. While you are reading, mark passages that strike you as important.
2. Draw a line down the center of your page. Label the left-hand column Q and the
right-hand column R.
3. Choose three to four of the most striking quotations youve marked and then record and
respond to these quotations in the format of a double-entry journal, as described below:
Left Column: Compelling Quotation Your goal on this side of the page is to record
quotations from the reading that youve found to be particularly though-provoking, baffling, or
insightful. Theres no need to copy the entire quotation. Excerpts are fine as long as they
capture a sense of the passage. Be sure to record the page numbers so you can refer back to
the passage.
Right Column: Response to the Quotation On this side of the page, respond to each
quotation in any fashion that helps you make better sense of it. Your goal is to succinctly
explore your reactions to this quotation, using one of the following options:
a) Question Write a real question designed to extend your thinking in response to
this quotation or to a related concept in the reading selection as a whole. Try to
begin working out an answer on paper.
b) Accept Specifically explain why you agree with this quotation and how you find
the ideas expressed there to be compelling.
c) Resist Problematize the quotation by describing which parts of it are appealing
and challenging those that seem unlikely to you.
d) Ignore If this quotation goes against every fiber of your being, tell yourself why.
