Mike McConnell is shown a chart that was produced by VeriSign that shows that network
bandwidth on a map of the world. This map showed Mike McConnell that if two people at two
different nations were communicating to each other through the network the U.S would most
likely be able to re-route the conversation to the U.S network and be able to receive information
like that. Though there was just one problem, the companies couldnt legally do it. So,
McConnell fought for a law to be passed to where he would be able to access all areas where
the U.S had network bandwidths at, without endangering American citizens privacy. This
eventually was achieved through the protect America Act. McConnell also was able to meet with
President Obama and discuss about the future of cyberwarfare.

Embedded quotation (page #)

How does it answer/relate to the Guiding Question?

McConnell was shown a network

bandwidth map, and he thought
of a strategy based on that
information, If a terrorist in
Pakistan was exchanging email
or talking on a cell phone with an
arms supplier in Syria, and if the
global network routed a piece of
their communication through the
United States, there was no need
to set up a data-scooping station
in hostile territory(Kaplan 192).

This relates to my guiding question because this

shows one example of how America would be able
to use technology and the effects of what they
could do with cyberwarfare. It also shows that if
America evolves their system, the current system
for network America would be able to control
majority of the worlds network because 80% of
networks run through their systems at this time.
