INTRODUCTION

Aninterpretation center,interpretivecenter,orvisitorinterpretivecenterisaninstitution for


disseminationofknowledgeofnaturalorculturalheritage.Interpretationcentersareakindofnewstyle
museum, often associated withvisitor centersorEco museums, and located in connection to
cultural,historicornaturalsites.ThesitegiveninthisdesignproblemisChilikawhichissituatedin
Odisha.Chilikaisecologicallyveryrichwithitslargevarietyoffloraandfaunawhichmakesitasuitable
placefordesigninganatureinterpretationcenterforitself.Thefacilityisexpectedtocaterto,onan
average,500visitorsdaily(ofallagegroups)duringpeakseason.

DESIGNPROCESS

Thefirstphaseofthedesignprocess(referfig.1)hasstartedwiththeintroductiontothe
meaningofanatureinterpretationcenterfollowedbythecasestudies.Aftermuchinference,wemoveto
siteanalysisofoursitesimultaneouslywithcontextanalysis.Thishelpsusindevelopingtheconcept.We
getourconceptsreviewedandrerevieweduntilsatisfactory.

The second phase of the
design process (refer fig. 2) includes
developmentofpreliminarysiteplansforrequiredcirculationandvehiclemovementinsidethesitealong
withprototypicalfloorplans.Thisisdoneafterdetailedareaprogramming.Thefurtherstagesofthe
processhelpindevelopingthefloorplanswithextensivereviews.Afterfinalizingthefloorplans,wemove
todevelopingtheelevationsandsections.Aftersatisfactoryelevationsandimplementationoftheconcept,
we simulate our design in 3D digitally as well as in 3D models. The final stage includes the sheet
simulationofrequireddata.

CONCLUSIONANDINFERENCE

Afterfinalreviews,Ifoundthatthereisalotofscopeforimprovementofthefloorplansand
circulationofthevisitorsinthenatureinterpretationcenter.Withfurtherbrainstorming,thecirculation
couldhavebeenmorefluidasthereweresomemajorflaws.Also,aproperbubblediagramwouldhave
helpedwiththeservicesandtheproblemsthatarosewithitafterthefulldesign.
Thematerialpalettecouldhavebeenimprovedbygivingmoredetailsandbyacquiringmore
knowledge about it. More time should have been given to the landscaping part since it is a nature
interpretationcenterandthenaturepartwasnotthatmuchhighlightedinourdesign.
