CHAPTER 1- INTRODUCTION
1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Fostering and rehabilitation is a mechanism to develop how our community is a place
for care and treat animals in most need of protection, and as they aim to provide a place
of refuge for homeless animals rescued and seized from illicit traders. A proposed
sanctuary where animals may have a second shot at life and be free of the traumas
they have endured. The purpose of this study is to be aware of animal cruelty, as this
kind of issue needs to be approach.
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society whose mission is to eradicate animal cruelty with
teaching, animal shelters, and awareness. The group believes that creating a healthier
atmosphere begins with broadening humanity's circle of empathy to include wildlife, and
so envisions a society that respects living creatures, promotes responsible pet care, and
preserves nature. This shelter is constructed because of the rising population of
abandoned animals, irresponsible owners, illicit importation of feral creatures, and harsh
treatment of animals.
This research aims to alter the perception of people towards organizations and rescue
facilities. By constructing a design that composes of animal care shelters, rehabilitation,
and essential protection inclined with socialization and education, The rehabilitation
procedure for domesticated animals will increase their prospects of adaptation,
temporary housing that includes their natural environment for their rapid recuperation
until they can find a new home.
This research expands the knowledge when it comes to animal care and awareness of
animal cruelty. “Hundreds of thousands of dogs are slaughtered for meat each year in
the Philippines. The dog meat trade is primarily centered in the city of Baguio, in the
northern Luzon Island province of Benguet. Historically, it was associated with
celebratory events and rituals of mourning and only affected a small number of dogs”
According to Republic of the Philippines House of Representative (2013). Due to the
desire of certain Filipinos for dog meat, the dog meat trade has continued in the
Philippines up to this day. “Asocena” as this term refers to the cooking and consumption
dog meat by humans. In this act of cruelty this research project aims to develop a plan
to eliminate this kind of misbehavior.
Moreover, human activities that threaten their natural environment are wreaking havoc.
As a result, their natural way of life has changed and gone. As these illegal human
activities such as logging, mining creates an effect of animal’s habitat. Areas in the
country create persistent threats owing violent conflicts that keep both poachers and
economic interest in some areas of the country (Sarmiento, 2021) As the COVID 19

epidemic hit the Philippines early last year 2020, interest soared, spawning the plantitos
and plantitas became immediate plant lovers.
This study aspires to alter the way people think about animal shelters and rescue
centers. By creating a pattern for an animal shelter spaces, recovery, rehabilitation and
needed protection for animals. Socialization and education can be applied by
humankind. Through this space, animals in shelter can be reformed. For domesticated
animals the process of rehabilitation will develop the chances of their adoption.
2. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
In Metro manila most of the well-known animal shelters is located at Quezon City and
Manila. Therefore, this study proposes a project for animal foster and rehabilitation
located in the east. The district of Pasig City is considered as one of the highly
urbanized areas in the metro and lacks area for animal shelter. And most of these
spaces only provide congested areas for animals which are cages and kennels.
However, these animals need to rehabilitate in an area where they can heal and feel
safe. A vast majority of species have struggled from pressure and trauma that cause by
the environment which triggers there healing stage and behavior since they were not
able to adapt efficiently in their environment compared to their natural habitat.
This study aims to identify different factors to construct a sustainable animal shelter
that entails with learning facilities to ensure the productivity of the project. In addition,
with how architecture can contribute to the improvement of animal recovery,
rehabilitation, confinement, and socialization in connection to humans.
3. DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM
To determine the relative strengths and weaknesses of the proposed project entailed
with the factors that may affect the design objective. Specifically, this research should
provide information on the following questions:
• How will the research proposal occur and how this paper can accomplish the
approach of sustainability?
• How would this research proposal will be valuable to the current condition and
environment?
• How will the design approach contribute to the development of educational
environment for humans while also promoting animal care responsibility?
• What are the key concepts involved to construct a healthy environment for
animal rehabilitation?
• What are the design considerations that needs to be accomplish for the animal’s
environment and interaction with humans?
• What are the design considerations that should be considered in zoning?

This research will provide a design animal shelter spaces and rescue facilities through
sustainable design. As the project proposes a two primary structures, a center where
animals will be cured and rehabilitated for therapy and the other is a research facility.
Administrative Building with a learning center space for educational purposes and
practical training and research. Therefore, this research considers regulations and
considerations with Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Department
of Agriculture under the Bureau of Animal Industry. To present an appropriate
allocation of the advantages accruing for the welfare, as well as monitoring the strict
restrictions and laws of RA 8485 (Animal Welfare Act of 1998), including but not limited
to RA 7160 (Local Government Code of 1991) and RA 9268 (Philippine Veterinary
Medicine Act of 2004).
4. ARCHITECTURAL GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The research aims to enhance the vitality of domestic and endangered animal
species. To establish an animal rehabilitation facility with a refuge for the area's
terrestrial animals. And through education, this paper aims to develop the
understanding and awareness when it comes to our wildlife habitats and the adaptability
ratio of abandoned animals.
Moreover, the architectural objective is to present a concept that entails the productivity
of the project and the environment. As to eliminate the negative effects of the other
proposed facilities on the environment and the shelter of animals. The research set its
insight for the sustainability of the proposed project including the following:
• Planning an adequate waste management
• Utilization of environmentally friendly materials
• Reduce energy usage by integrating environmental energy and a new
mechanical innovation into the structure
• Minimalization of energy consumption using solar energy
• Consideration of Natural lighting
• Consideration of Natural Ventilation with the approach of tropical design
Constructing a safer shelter along with the various concerns and considerations
that need to be applied. The following design objectives will further improve the
project functionality and the research objective
ACOUSTICS
- The arrangement (housing) of animals in respect to one another is an important
acoustical factor. For

House yapping pups away from kittens, nursing mothers, and debilitated animals,
for example, find yapping puppies away from kittens, nursing mothers, and
emaciated animals.
Furnaces, washing machines, and phones should be kept well away from the
euthanasia chamber. The noise of barking can be decreased by properly
designing and selecting materials for the dog kennel area.
HVAC
- It is required to install a good, designed heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning
(HVAC) system once it has been installed. It’s critical to keep it in good working
order and clean the ducts on a regular basis. Dirt and hair residues on the
interior. Airborne pollutants are regularly re-circulated into kennel areas due to
ducting, and these toxins are harmful to the animals. Contaminants can be a
significant cause of illness.
LIGHTING
-Instead of down the center of the aisle separating facing runs, cage luminaires
must be installed above dog runs. This allows visitors and employees to see the
animals more easily. The placement of the lights in this manner should enable
enough light to spill over onto the pathways without posing a safety danger to the
public or personnel.
SEGREGATION OF SPECIES
-Older creatures must be segregated from infants (NURSING AREA), and
different species should be placed in different rooms. Arriving creatures should
indeed be kept with the flow of traffic.
To avoid the transmission of illness, those with unclear health conditions are kept
segregated from the general community. As a result, public traffic should flow
through the shelter in a consistent pattern, going from young to senior animals.
5. SCOPE AND LIMITATION
5.1 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This research will concentrate on assisting and enhancing the characteristics of animal
welfare in Pasig City, as well as knowing and acknowledging the relevance and efficacy
of having healthy wildlife in the city.

The researcher will study. Moreover, the researcher will conduct a local and
international case study and review of related literature to acquire knowledge and
information that will be valuable for the research paper. As the goal is to acquire an
improvement design and learn from the case studies to be conducted.
5.2 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The researcher will cover a study that interprets the domesticated animals that are
rescued and found inside the city and nearby.
However, the limiting factors that may affect the study are the gathered information,
unavailability of information that cannot be found on the internet, and thus this research
will be conducted in the time of COVID-19 PANDEMIC which restricts social and
physical connections that may cause the limited information and conduction of
observations in the proposed area.
As the research design will facilitate a figure that accommodates the animals in Pasig
City. Estimation of number of pets in the community are handle accordingly to avoid
future congestion in the shelter
6. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This research urges people to learn more about animal shelters today. It delves into the
study on domesticated and wild animals, as well as their requirements and behaviors,
along with constructing and planning appropriate habitats for them and human contact.
Furthermore, this study would benefit the Animal Society in the City of Pasig, by
increasing public awareness concerning wildlife conservation, rehabilitation, and ethical
ownership.
The researcher will present valuable considerations to develop proper zoning of spaces
to achieve sustainability and functionality of the proposed project. The entailment of
architectural design this study will serve as a basis to improve animal shelters in the
metro, as its objective is to raise awareness in our society.
This study encourages information about Animal Shelters today. It explores research
about the domesticated and wildlife animals with their needs and behavior, developing
an environment suitable for them and with human interaction. This research will

To animals, enhancing animal welfare with this research. The study will show proper
zoning, spaces, and natural captivity that can help them recover from what they suffer.
Through the help of architectural design, these facilities and amenities will help them to
recover fast and be return to its habitat. It will also be a place for human-animal bond
that will help to improve their social interaction.
To humans, raising awareness on animal and nature conservation. People can’t be
bystanders in the face of harsh and treatment of the less powerful. This study will shed
light on the ethics that people should do with animals.
To animal shelters and centers in Zamboanga City. This research can be a guide and
reference to the different trends and architectural design that would help improve the
existing animal facilities.
To co-researchers, the study shall be a good source of information about animal shelter
park and add to the existing body of knowledge. Techniques used to gather data can be
assumed, revised, and improved depending to the area being studied.
CASE STUDIES
This research paper provides case studies here as follows to be support and set as a
valuable example for the research. Considering LEED approach, and to attain the
design objective of this project. The following case studies will serve as a support basis
for the project sustainability approach in transforming a facility that is energy efficient
and proper design for the utilization of water which LEED is certified at. As this case
studies be able to aid architectural design approach with the perception of animal’s
sense that will be able to create a good sanctuary for them considering acoustic design,
the materials to be utilized, spatial quality between groups as this will provide a
functionality and sustainability for the project. As some are in the heart of a city, while
others are on huge lots in the suburbs. Each of these works look at the problems that
might arise in animal rescues. There are indeed several ways and strategies that may
significantly contribute to the betterment in an animal sanctuary, for both people and our
furry friends as SWOT analysis has developed to present the strengths, weaknesses,
possible opportunities, and threats by these following studies.

Moreover, The Denver Animal Shelter takes in over 7,000 lost and abandoned animals
annually. It's at 1241 West Bayaud Avenue in Denver, CO 80223. Household pets such
Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, and other animals are among the animals that the shelter assists
in finding loving homes. There are 163 dogs and 124 cats in the facility, as well as
urbanized creatures, exotic animals, and a large animal farm. From site and floor
planning to meticulous placement and benefits of construction methods, the structure is
deliberately built with development in mind. In addition, it was a SILVER LEED
approved and the said animal shelter exceeds their design objectivity of sustainable
design. The facility is projected to achieve LEED Platinum certification without
exceeding the project cost due to the efforts of the whole team. These follows are
certain sustainable highlights that are directly related to the facility's running
development when it comes to operating cost of the project.
1. When feasible, water-saving fixtures are utilized, and the site is planned to decrease
irrigation.
2. Durable materials and hygienic features are utilized throughout, decreasing the
building's value stream expenses. 2011
3. Certain spaces are designed to prevent heat gain and the facility itself is angled to
enhance thermal properties.
4. The facility's energy usage is reduced by 30% as compared to the ASHRAE
Baseline. Recirculation cooling, both direct and indirect, and energy recovery were used
to achieve most of this.

The organization has achieved or surpassed the requirements of the North Carolina
High-Performance Building program, which is similar to LEED. Its address is 2769
Conroy Rd, Orlando, FL 32839, United States. For its outstanding sustainable
characteristics, the building has been recognized in Environmental Design and
Construction. It was also prominently published as a model of a sanctuary that
integrates healthy animal habitats in Healthy Pet magazine.
As the project entails fostering pets in a statewide animal service which operates in a
light filled 24 000- square foot structure that aims to redefine “economy, efficiency and
sustainability”. The sanctuary areas for animals are visible perpendicular to the parking
lot through windows in this way the design present flexibility with the humans and
animals. In addition, the passive and active strategies are also utilized in the building.
(Weinstein Friedlein Architects)
The structure incorporates most of the effective sustainability methods as the Denver
Animal Shelter, including proper building orientation, daylit indoor areas, sustainable
materials, energy-efficient maintenance support with energy recovery, and
sustainable architecture. The facility also features an advanced rainwater and greywater
recycling system. During a dry season, which would have ordinarily curtailed the
consumption of water in the facility, this technology came in handy. (Orange County

aggressively campaigns against unethical activities that concerns the life of animals.
The organization currently develop an education for the awareness of animal care and
animal cruelty. The shelter has a poor architectural planning as the animals are placed
in some of the areas that lacks control of odor and air circulation. However, their
advocacy is what they imply in the city, as it is a volunteer-based organization it play a
vital role in our ecosystem whose main objectives to eliminate animal cruelty. And
provide animal shelters for abandoned animals.
The area has two primary clinics Low cost spay and Trap neuter return. As this may
help animals to live longer. For their rescue and rehabilitation shelter, it is a sanctuary is

Mandaluyong Animal Shelter. However, some of the heartwarming social media post
aid the research paper. For the gathering of data, the shelter campaigns an adaptation
procedure. As most of the dogs end up in the facility because of irresponsible pet
owners who did not consider having a pet as a lifetime commitment and chose to
surrender them. (Mandaluyong Animal Shelter and Pound)
This shelter is located at F. Martinez Ave, Mandaluyong, Metro Manila. As some of the
research photos, pets are placed in kennel and cages in an agonizingly unsanitized
environment. Therefore, the significance of planning a good ventilation and considering
the proper hygiene for canine and their shelter must take into consideration. As poor
ventilation and unclean areas can cause a risk to animals’ welfare.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
UNDERSTANDING THE THREATS TO ANIMALS AND WILDLIFE
A species' survival may be jeopardized if it is unable to adapt to these dangers
effectively. Volcanic activity, earthquakes, meteor strikes, wildfires, and storms are all
examples of unpredictable catastrophes that must be dealt with by living creatures.
(Klappenbach,2014). This begins with the author assertion which living things may
suffers on a continual onslaught of externa; pressures or dangers that may also
threaten their capacity to live and reproduce, as identified by the author the factors of
hazards to animals and wildlife.
The unique capacity of humans to comprehend the effects or consequences of all
actions are also the responsible for the animal threats. As the author states habitat loss
and fragmentation is one of the man-made threats. In which the author highlighted the
continuous destruction of habitat for the construction purpose or establishments such as
development of towns and cities, dam building and other uses. Human-caused global
warming, such as the fossil fuel combustion, has altered the Earth's climate and led in
anthropogenic climate change. As the result of this threats, animals are forced to adopt
and shift to new environment condition. The author implies the Over-Exploitation of
Resources in which often occurred in population collapses due to the exploitation of
populations for food (over-fishing, for example). Endangered Species Hunting,
Poaching, and Unlawful Trade – certain endangered species are sought for their illicit
market rate. In addition, there are fatalities caused by accidents such as car crashes or
flying animals hitting car windows. Loss of habitat can cause the extinction of domestic
and wild animals. As this study will support the design solution and architectural
objective to further enhance its functionality. To have a better approach this literature
has a significant factor in understanding the importance of habitat to animals. In which
destruction and damaging the environment of domestic and wildlife animals can brought
to light how vulnerable the world's most vital ecosystems are. Half of the world's original
Page | 11

forests are vanished, and what is left is being taken down at a faster than it can be
replanted.
As this review of related literature can support future studies in which include the threats
to wildlife animals. As the author briefly explains the broad knowledge when it comes to
understanding the threats in which affects the natural life of species. As the importance
of community awareness are critical in instilling a compassionate society to preserve
animals and find long-term solutions to these problems. Also, to have a good influence
as all these issues must be handled jointly not just locally but on a worldwide basis.
Therefore, we must be conscious of expanding urbanization, rising temperatures, and
ecotourism, all of which are harmfully contributing to and exacerbating the effects on
wildlife.
THE EMOTIONAL LIVES OF ANIMALS: A LEADING SCIENTIST EXPLORES
ANIMAL JOY, SORROW, AND EMPATHY - AND WHY THEY MATTER
“When animals express their feelings, they pour out like water from a spout. Animals'
emotions are raw, unfiltered, and uncontrolled. Their joy is the purest and most
contagious of joys and their grief the deepest and most devastating. Their passions
bring us to our knees in delight and sorrow.” (Bekoff, 2008)
The literature starts off with an important terminology that highlights the authors content
“animal emotions”. The field of cognitive ethology of Marc Bekoff study will effectively
supports this research, relevant to the development of educational environment for
humans while also promoting animal care.
The author as a well-known scientist compiles a few personal accounts in order to
establish the universality of human-like emotions in non-human animals. Animal
impulses may teach humans about love, understanding, and compassion, but they also
demand us to drastically reconsider our existing dominance and maltreatment of
animals, according to Bekoff. Moreover, according to scientific evidence, many animals
are exceptionally endowed and possess sensory and motor abilities that much exceed
human own. Moreover, scientific evidence was presented in which numerous creatures
are exceptionally endowed and possess sensory and motor abilities that much exceed
human own. Dogs can detect ailments like cancer and diabetes, as well as alert people
of heart attacks and strokes. Low-frequency noises are used by elephants, whales,
hippopotamuses, giraffes, and alligators to connect across great distances, frequently
kilometers, whereas high-frequency sounds are used by bats, dolphins, whales, frogs,
and different mice to search for food, interact, and locate. Several animals exhibit a
wide range of emotions, including pleasure, enthusiasm, empathy, tenderness,
sadness, anger, and shame, to name a few. It's not unexpected that mammals but not
Page | 12
Far Eastern University DECEMBER 2021

exclusively, share many feelings with each other because we share limbic system brain
regions which control our feelings. Emotional responses are, in many respects, the gifts
of our animal forefathers.
In conclusion Bekoff (2007), strategically write a book to proof that animal also express
emotions, therefore these review of related literature builds the research field of study in
connecting the key concepts of animal emotions involving the construction of a healthy
animal rehabilitation. As animal emotions serve as a core system in creating excellent
approach to a sustainable and functional development for domestic animals.
ANIMAL RESCUE CENTER: DOMESTICATED AND WILDLIFE
Animal sanctuaries contain and rehabilitate either domestic or wild animals are
prevalent. As shelters are started growing in an urban community, rehabilitation and
treatment for animals that has been damaged unknown causes, traffic accidents,
poaching. These facilities may be available to the public, allowing visitors to get up
close and personal with creatures they wouldn't encounter in the wild. Domestic animal
shelters are frequently sanctuaries for stray and abandoned animals. As this type of
construction aim to adequately protect the animals and provide a haven for them to
reintegrate into society. (2008, Zawistowski)
The main function in working at an animal shelter can bring the goodness in every
volunteer or worker. The nurture that can convey is a sense of achievement. Being able
to connect and rehabilitating abandoned animals. Inside the rescue center is a kind of
opportunity to connect stated by the author. Moreover, the author defined animal shelter
as an organization that offers a new shelter for stray pets and other animals that are up
fir adoption, particularly one that is financed by philanthropic contributions. The
organization that offers a temporary home for an animal until it may be adopted.
However, most of these animals shelters function as the author discussed in which
other animal shelters will either retain animals or send them into another group as this
may can result to a better chance of foster care or adaption. As animal shelter’s main
objective is to give animals a second shot at life. Bekoff literature precisely explains how
these programs can create development in community’s animal welfare. Moreover, the
author also stated that all animals regardless of what kind are “adoptable” as long as
they are healthy and teachable.
However, some cases in which animals does not good looking has not enough support
or chances for adaptation, the author imposed. Where the article speaks about that with
that kind of instance the term of “animal emotions” must be identify significantly.
Banners and fliers would help in fostering abandoned animals. In addition, some animal
shelters do not work genuinely like other group of volunteers. They promote animal
foster care with self-benefits, as a source of profit. Either individuals believe that
keeping the animals’ alive costs too much money or that having fewer animals is less
Page | 13
Far Eastern University DECEMBER 2021
Institute of Architecture and Fine Arts
bother, but certainly, the animals' best interests are not being considered, as they are at
a no kill shelter.
Somehow it is a fact that creating a shelter must have enough profit to sustain it. As a
result, Zawistowski prepositions implies to its readers the planning of animal shelters is
giving a fair chance of life to those animals who had been abandoned and traumatized.
While other shelters cannot afford to retain other animals, they may be able to locate
foster homes for them until they can be adopted or find a better solution. As why should
an animal be murdered without even a choice if it is not a threat to others? The animals
are unable to express themselves. Therefore, naturalizing this kind of study will provide
the research a more reliable data complying the architectural objects and design
solutions.
ANIMAL SHELTER PLANNING
The journal covers a wide range of animal shelter regulations. According to the author, local
services for the community and their companion animals are the most significant aspect for a
healthy and functional sanctuary 21st century, as a future innovation of shelters promotes the
human/animal link. (Gates,2000)
Shelters are being designed to promote public participation and remove the idea that they are a
"place where they murder animals," which discourages visitors. It might become a site where a
wide range of animal-related services are given, in addition to animal management and shelter.
Psychological counseling, agility preparation, dog parks, dog daycare, and boarding are just a
few of the services that may help planning a shelter become known as a fun destination to visit
on a regular basis. Humans engage, educate to care, and train to reach out in a well-designed
shelter. The shelter provides areas for its residents, both animal and human, to work, play,
study, and feel safe. Therefore, building a sanctuary must also be accessible to its community.
As this should be situated and constructed to be appealing to the general population. It should
create a secure and healthy environment. Between the animals and the genuinely care for them
need a healthy environment.
Reviewing points alleged by the author presents strong information in planning a sustainable
home for animals. As this takes part in predesign phases, mostly in floor plans. Features and
considerations into what kind of animals in each shelter must be designed. Entailment of
characteristics and psychological aspect of the certain animal in each area has its own set of
constraint.
Proper estimation of domestic animals in which the animal shelter can accommodate to avoid
congestion and balanced health care for every animal. As spaces must be well designed
therefore the number of pets must also take into consideration as they are the one being placed
in a proper environment for their fast recovery. To further improve the sustainability of the
shelter, The study provides a valuable factor to the researcher, an effective shelter provides a
comfortable environment for the animals, the public, and the staff. Integrating the acoustic
design and odor control are important considerations in the construction of a
friendly environment. Although there are expenses involved with increasing mechanical
capacity.

On a final note, the literature simply focuses on building a proper sanctuary for the animals
inclined with an aesthetical design along with building laws and considerations. As Lawrence
Gates briefly discussed that building this kind of projects takes a lot of motivation to start.
REPUBLIC ACT NO. 8485
The "Animal Care Act of 1998" is a legislative act in the Philippines that promotes animal
welfare. It is expressly prohibited to torture, neglect to provide adequate care, sustenance, or
shelter, or maltreat any animals, or to subject any dog or horse to dogfights or horse fights, or to
kill, cause or procure to be tortured or deprived of adequate care, sustenance, or shelter, or to
maltreat or use any animal in research or experiments not expressly authorized by the
Committee on Animal Welfare. (Congress, 1998)
Philippine Republic passed the “Animal Welfare Act of 1998” to improve the wellbeing of
animals. It is illegal to mistreat creatures, to omit to provide proper care, nourishment, or shelter,
and many other things, as mentioned in section 6. However, is it possible that abandoned
animals are treated humanely? Furthermore, it has been observed that most animal pounds
provide stray animals an unfair and prejudiced death if they are not adopted or claimed by their
owners.
Animal cruelty in children and teenagers has appeared as an indication of domestic violence
and a caution indicator of future aggressiveness. Medical practitioners should be mindful of the
incidence of animal cruelty, as well it entails to human violence. According to Ascione, this
worrisome situation as an unreported and underrated topic They may contribute to the
understanding and avoidance of violence, as well as advocating for health services. and
associated legislation to address it.
DOGS AT PASIG CITY DOG POUND NEED HOMES
The article encourages dog pounds to stop “Killing policy”. In the city of Pasig, a dog pound
protocol in which at least 22 dogs must find a new home within 10 days, or they will be put to
death. As a result, an internet campaign has been launched to locate someone ready to foster
the dogs well before period ends.
Maxine Dimanlig, a web designer who created a website for the campaign, learned about the
dogs after a street dog her household had been feeding vanished. She and her sister
discovered the dog, whom they named Mangy, together with 22 other canines inside the Pasig
City Dog Pound. According to her, pets were living in confined quarters. "The dogs had to share
the board with a lot of trash, metal containers, and rusty field level chairs, and they didn't have
any food or water trays." "The cages were all mashed together, like sub-cages with one
extremely large cage room, with a few dogs per cage, several of them intermediate canines,"
she explained.
With this type of system, animal shelters must be consider estimating the number of pets they
can accommodate or finding another shelter for pets. Solutions with this type of adaptation crisis
also needs to be addressed by the government to put on hold the killings.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Most domesticated and wildlife animal shelters in Pasig City only have kennels and cages for
animals that have been rescued or surrendered. Most pets may endure anxiety; however, most
animals endure from strain and trauma, which can result to irrational behavior and, in the worst-
case scenario, death. The purpose of this study is to How can architecture promote in the
proper planning of places for animal recuperation, rehabilitation, confinement, and social contact
between animals and humans, as well as between animals and their natural environment?
The researcher presented three ideas, each with its own field: human-animal interaction, animal
landscape habitat, and animal shelter care.
The idea of the animal as a human companion is addressed as human-animal interaction, which
has both neurodevelopment and reciprocal impacts on the same side of the person and animal,
usually domestic animals
Moreover, the next theory, the natural animal landscape habitat, contrasts the animal's true
home with its temporary shelter for wild animals, whose mode of life cannot be readily changed.
Demonstrating how an animal makes significant development when it returns to its native
habitat.

Furthermore, the third notion, animal shelter care, focuses on the animal's overall health. The
sanctuary offers a safe, secure, and physically healthy setting as well as animal-related
activities.
The three-concept approach. A well-balanced method to building an animal shelter care facility
may be achieved. Including extensive animal rehabilitation with the help of natural landscapes,
as well as the human-animal contact relationship through the areas.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Along with the case studies and related literature, The current animal shelters in Metro Manila
domestic and wildlife animal shelters, usually case animal stress, strain, and trauma. Insufficient
finances to provide larger and better facilities for the rescued animals. Poor funding for these
shelters has resulted in a lack of animal awareness among the public.
The question today is how architecture can enhance animal rehabilitation, containment, and
social connection with humans and their natural habitat through space programming. The
human-animal relationship, natural animal landscape habitat, and animal shelter care are the
three concepts proposed by the researcher.
Therefore, the researcher conveys the research paper would contribute to the animal protection,
establish a trend in the Philippines Business, and campaign for animal welfare and
environmental conservation. Observation, literature review, gathering of data, and data analysis
are the four primary steps of research methodology.

Moreover, the researchers claim that in an animal shelter care facility will encourage human-
animal bonding and enable in the reintegration of animals into their natural surrounding by
creating adequate care and a healthy atmosphere. As a result, the researcher concludes that
establishing an Animal Rehabilitation and Learning Center for domesticated and wild animals
will become an effective way to address animal risks and protection while also strengthening the
human-animal bond. This will have a significant impact on tourism, education, the field of
architecture, non-animal lovers, and animal lovers.
RESEARCH DESIGN
The researcher utilizes a qualitative approach for the study. As these type of method assists in
the examination of an occurrences within a specific context using diverse data sources, and it
does so through several lenses to disclose many sides of the phenomenon (Baxter & Jack,
2008). As the purpose of this study is how architecture can promote animal awareness by
constructing a facility and learning center for animal’s welfare.
Moreover, to acquire a thorough grasp of what is happening on in relation to the issue,
qualitative research questions frequently begin with how or what. (Patton, 2002; Seidman,
1998). Therefore, these research study seeks to know the differences and issues of animal
shelters in Metro Manila. This qualitative study allows the researcher to explore different cases
and challenges in animal shelter, such as overcrowding, inadequate healthcare system, limited
resources and poor designed facilities that may cause problems.
The research design frames the architectural goals and objectives. Therefore, the research
design aims to assess these types of phenomena which may lead to an innovative design
approach that will promote animal awareness in terms of planning adequate spaces for faster
recovery and short span of healing stage for animals, as by also considering the scope and
limitation of the research study. In addition, with the literature review which conducted to gain
better understanding and additional information to the area of the research.
