RollerClutchOperation
Therollerclutchemploysaprincipalofwedgingamultipleofrollersbetweenadrivingmembercalledtherollerraceanda
drivenmembercalledtheactuatingcam.Thecamiskeyedtothecrankshaftandtheraceiskeyedtotheflywheel.Aspring
loadedrollercagewithastrikingfacemachinedonitmovestherollersfromtheother,controlstherollercage.Whenthe
solenoidisenergized,itpullsuponeendofthepivotarm,thewedgeontheotherendispulleddown.Thisallowstheroller
cagespringstomovethecageandrollerstothewedgingordrivingposition.Beforethecrankshafthasturnedonerevolution
thesolenoidisdeenergizedandthewedgeispulledupbytheleverspring.Whenthecagestrikingfacemeetstherelease
strikerthecageisstopped.Thecrankshaftcontinuestorotatethusmovingtherollerstotheidlepositionwheretheydonot
wedgeagainstthedrivingrace.Theflywheelwillcontinuetoturnbutthecrankshaftwillstopneartopcenterposition.

PinClutchOperation
Thepinclutchconsistsofaspringloadeddrivingdogthatengagesaslotteddrivecollarfastenedtotheflywheel.Thedogis
retainedinacollarthatiskeyedtothecrankshaft.Inthefreerunningpositionthedrivingdogisheldbackbyawedge.The
wedgeisfastenedtooneendofaspringloadedleverarm,ontheotherendisasolenoid.Whenthesolenoidisenergizedby
theantirepeatcontrol,itpullsupononeendoftheleverarm.Thewedgeontheotherendispulleddownallowingthedriving
dogtomovetowardtheflywheelandengagethedrivecollarandtheflywheelwillturnthecrankshaft.Beforethecrankshaft
hasturnedonerevolutionthesolenoidisdeenergizedandthewedgeispulledupbytheleverspring.Whenthedrivingdog
reachesthewedge,itwillbeforcedbackandoutofthedrivingcollarthusdisengagingtheflywheelfromthecrankshaft.The
flywheelwillcontinuetoturnbutthecrankshaftwillstopinaneartopposition.
