Peasants faced very high taxes (5 times


the taxes of pre-Peter) to pay for
professional military, and the capture of
port cities to build a navy led to
increased naval trade, and production
increased during modernization of
Russia and its military.
All members of govt and peasantry
followed the Russian Orthodox Church,
which has influenced by the Eastern
Orthodox Church, though sometimes
leaders would abuse the Church (Peter
taking from its wealth)

Social

Military was respected for


professionalism, peasant
class was often treated
badly and many were
killed, and taxes favored
rich while the poor held
the govt up.

Intellectual

Many Western European


intellectuals were brought
into Russia to help model
political policies after
Western European policis,
and technicians were
brought in to modernize
Russia.

Artistic

Russia became highly


artistic during this time,
with Catherine being very
influenced by
Enlightenment Ideals,
making one of the worlds
largest art collections in
St. Petersburg.
