SEMESTER: ALPHA
TIME: 3 HOURS CONTACT PER WEEK
LOCATION: P66
COURSE CONTENT:
v Introduction to Wireline logs
v Importance of Wireline Logs
v Principles and application of Wireline logs
v Open hole Logging
v Mud logging
v Logging-while-drilling (LWD)
v Introduction to cased hole log evaluation
1. BRIEF OVERVIEW OF COURSE
The course is well logging and interpretation which deals with record taking of conditions and
parameters of hydrocarbon during exploration activities
2. COURSE OBJECTIVES AND GOAL
To acquaint the student with the fundamentals and importance of well logging, the various types
of well logs and also the use and application of the same. This course is based on the foregoing
knowledge of petroleum occurrence and accumulation, and assumes that the student already has
a fundamental background of where and how hydrocarbon exploration activities are initiated.
However, a review of these will be presented. The course is viewed at making the student
appreciate the use of well logs and its accurate interpretation for standard and optimum
hydrocarbon recovery. The course will be taught in modular form.
3. METHODS OF LECTURE DELIVERY/ TEACHING AIDS
Lecture delivery methods
Lecturing and Teaching aid
Instructor student interaction
Tutorial methods
Teaching aids
Visual Aids (Power point slides and Lecture template/ handouts)
Audiovisual Aids (Use of video players - movies)
D. COURSE OUTLINES AND MODULES
Module 1 - Introduction to basics of wireline logs its importance and principles
(1st 8th week)
Objective: To make the student aware of the link between Petroleum exploration and well log
which is an aspect of Geophysics that has the responsibility of taking record of
subsurface
reservoir parameters during exploration activities for hydrocarbon. Its
importance and
principles will be discussed.
Module 2 - Open hole well logging (8th 11th week)
Objectives: The use of open well log is introduced to the student and they are taught the
various types of open hole logs. The students are also taught the analysis of well logs and
formation
evaluation techniques.
Modules 3 Introduction to sitting on the hole and cased hole log evaluation (11th -13th weeks)
Objectives: To acquaint the students with various means of logging and drill monitoring
operation
during exploration. The importance of cased hole logging and its evaluation will
be dealt
with.
