Ab Initio Writing Assignment

The Task
You will write a 200-300 word written assignment during the second year of the
course. You will need to choose one topic from the following themes:
Town and Rural environments: physical geography, weather, environmental
concerns, global issues, town and services
Individual and Society: Shopping, food and drink, education, daily routine,
relationships, health
Work and Leisure: free time activities, media, world of work, sport, technology,
transport, holidays
You will need to research your topic to find information about what happens in a
francophone country, such as France, Martinique, Nouvelle Caldonie, Sngal,
Qubec,,, and another country; either your own home country or UAE (Emirats
Arabes Unis).
You will need to print off minimum 2 texts you have found in the target language (i.e
French) and 1 text in English or another language. My advice is to find 3 texts in the
target language and 1 text (if needed) in the other language.
The Assessment
The assessment will last 2 hours and you will have to write 200-300. You MUST stay
within the word limit or you will drop 2 marks and the marker will stop after 300
words.
For the assessment, you should bring

a paper dictionary
your texts
typed up bibliography in standard format of the texts you are using

You will need to be prepared to label and write your assignment under the following
headings:
Description (2 points)
Introduce 3 facts about your chosen topic (50 words)
e.g. Lducation est un aspect trs important de la vie quotidienne de tous les
jeunes citoyens du monde, quils soient europens, quils soient indiens. Chaque
pays a un systme un peu diffrent, bien que les buts ducatifs soient pareils. En
France on entre lcole maternelle trois ans et on y reste jusqu lge de cinq ans.

Ensuite on va lcole primaire de six dix ans, et aprs on entre le collge, o on

fait soit le BEPC ou un CAP. A quinze ans on choisit si on veut passer le baccalaurat
ou un diplme technique.
Comparaison

francophone country and the other country. You should not repeat the same points
made in the description.
e.g. En ce qui concerne le systme il nexiste pas trop de diffrences. Cependant,
quant la journe scolaire, il y a beacoup de diffrences entre les coles en France
et aux Emirats Arabes Unis. On peut remarquer que les lves franais ne portent
pas duniforme tandis que dans mon cole Abou Dhabi tous les tudiants doivent
porter une chemise blanche, un pantalon vert et des chaussures noires. Il est
intressant de voir que les lves ont cours le samedi dimanche, mais nont pas de
cours le mercredi. Aux EAU nous avons cours de dimanche jeudi. Finalement alors
que le dernier cour de laprs-midi finit peu prs cinq heures, notre journe
scolaire finit trois heures moins le quart.
Reflexion (6 points)

Again you should avoid repeating the same points made elsewhere in the
assignment. I would also advise that you rewrite the questions (these do not make
up part of your word count).
e.g.
Quel aspect ta surpris le plus?
Ce que jai trouv le plus surprenant est le fait que si un professeur est malade tous
les tudiants vont dans une salle de permanence pour faire des tudes
indpendantes. Ici le directeur de notre cole paie un professeur supplant de nous
enseigner si notre professeur est absent.
Pourquoi, ton avis, existe-il ces diffrences/similitudes ?
Daprs moi, il y a moins de rgles scolaires dans une cole franaise parce quils
ont une attitude un peu plus relch envers lducation. En plus notre semaine
scolaire est diffrente parce que jhabite dans un pays islamique, o on va la
mosque le vendredi au lieu de travailler.

Quest-ce quun francophone trouverait diffrent dans ta culture ?

Pour ma part un tudiant franais le trouverait trs bizarre quil est interdit
dembrasser ou mme toucher un autre tudiant du sexe diffrent. Pour eux, il est
normal de faire les bises, tandis que cest absolument interdit ici.
