Flaring(partthatspreads)atubeisanimportantskillthatallHVAC(heating,venting
andairconditioning)peoplemustknowhowtodo.Itisaneasymeansofattaching
varioustubestogethercommontotheHVACfield.
Theprocedureincludesafewdifferenttypesofequipmentwhichincludesatube,tube
cutter,reamerandaflaringtool.Thisequipmentnomatterthebrandisall similarin
nature.Theyalldothesamething.Whentheseitemsareusedinaspecificway theend
resultwillbeaflaredtube.

Preparing

DetermineWhatsNeeded
Atechnicianwillselectthetypeoftubeheneedsneed(Fig.1)and
properdiameter.(Fig.2)

Measure&Cut
Thetechnicianwilldetermineandmeasureandmarkthelengthwitha
marker.(Fig3),Hewillthenplaceatubecutter(Fig.4)overthemark
andturntheknobuntilthecuttingwheelslightlytouch(Fig.5)themark.
Thecutterwillberotatedaminimumofoncearoundthecircumference
ofthetubetopreventanunevencutting.Theknobwillbeturnonce
againandberepeateduntilthetubeiscut.

endofthetube.Thetechnicianwillinserttheendofthepieceonthe
endsofthereamer.Thereamerwillberotatedonbothsidesandturned
untilallbursareremoved.Oncecompleteditsreadyforflaring.

MakingTheFlare
Setup
(Fig.7)Thetechnicianwillnowinsert thereamedpiece1/8passthe
topedgeontheflaringblock,insuringtheendtobeflaredisonthe
angledsideoftheblock.Thewingnutsareturnedcounterclockwisefor
ittobeeasilyinserted.Onceplacedinthehole,thewingnutswillbe
turnedclockwisesecuringtheassembly.
Thetechnicianwillnowattachthesliponyoketotheflareblock.Once
placedontheblockandflareconeisalignedtheoverthetube,the
handleisturnedclockwiserotatingthefeedscrewdownforcingtheflare
conedowntothetube.Hewillstoponceitisitisjusttouchesthetube.
Asaresultofthisthesliponyokeissecured.

ConfirmingSetup
Thetechnicianwillverifyandrecheckthesetup.Thewingnutswillbe
checkedtopreventslippingofthetubeandanyotherproblemsthatmay
occur.Onceconfirmedthetechnicianwillcontinued.

MakeFlare
Thetechnicianwillnowsecurelyholdoftheflareblockwithonehand
andfirmlyturnthehandlewiththeother,untilitwillnolongerturn.Asa
resultaflareismadeontheendofthetube.(Fig.8)

RemoveEquipment

Thetechnicianwillturnthehandlecounterclockwiseuntiltheslipon
yokeisdetached.Thewingnutswillbeloosenedandthepieceisable
toberemoved.

Checking
Note:(Ifanyflaredoesnotpassanyofthecheckingitisbadandmustbe
replaced.)

VisuallyInspect
Oncetheflarepieceisremovedthetechnicianwillvisually inspectthe
flare(Fig.9)forsignsofcrackingorsplitting.

CheckWithFlareNut
Thetechnicianwillalsoslideaflarenut(Fig.9)onthetubefromthe
othersideandchecktomakesureitswillrotatefreelyandtheflareisnot
toobig.

CheckWithFitting
Thetechnicianwillmakecertainwithonelastcheck.Hewillplacethe
flareonaflarefitting(Fig.10)tomakesureitwillworkcorrectly.

ReadyForUse
Onceallthechecksarecompletedandpassedtheflareisnowreadyfor
use.Aproperlymadeflarewillinsurethattheairconditioningsystemwill
befreefromleaksatthejoints.(Fig.11)
