Bullying In The Kite Runner

There are many examples of bullying in The Kite

Runner by Khaled Hosseini, some of them relating
to the ethnicity Hazara.
Hazaras are considered a minority in Afghanistan
due to their shia Muslim faith. Most people are of
the Sunni faith.
Bully: to use superior strength or influence to intimidate someone,
typically to force him or her to do what one wants
This type of bullying relates to the world today because people that are
muslim are still discriminated against. They are sometimes considered
terrorists just because of their ethnicity. Also, the laws about
immigration are changing for the muslims in the USA making it
extremely hard on them.
Assef: This character is one of the main bullies in the novel. He sees
people of the ethnicity Hazara as a minority. Hassan is one of his main
targets because he is very innocent and helpless considering Assef has
authority over him. He is known for his brass knuckles which he
threatens to use.
Of all the neighbourhood boys who tortured Ali, Assef was by far the
most relentless, (Hosseini 41).
This shows how poorly Assef treats the Hazaras because he was
brought up to believe that they are worthless
Amir handles this by sticking up for Hassan and trying to get the
boys to see Hazaras from his perspective
Hassan tries to deal with this by using violence, he takes out his
slingshot and threatens to us it on Assef and the other boys
Amir: This character is a minor bully in the novel. He does not treat
Hassan very fairly in the sense that he only plays with him when they

are at their home and does not include him when there are other
friends around. Also he blames Hassan for many things even though
Hassan is innocent.
Id tease him, expose his ignorance, (Hosseini 30).
This shows how Amir took Hassans lack of knowledge for granted
and teased him for it
I opened my mouth, almost said something. Almost. The rest of my
life might have turned out differently if I had. But I didnt. I just
watched, (Hosseini 78).

In this situation, Amir was a bystander, but in this case it is

almost worse than being the bully. He had the chance to stand up
for Hassan but didnt even after all that Hassan has done for him
