ANTI-BATERIAL SPIDER
SILK
Tanirah Blakey

The hot topic I have chosen is using spider silk as a powerful antibiotic material. At the
university of Nottingham, the students and faculty have established a synthetic spider silk that
can be used into different things using click chemist. Click chemistry refers to a group of
reactions that are fast, simple to use, and easy to purify. The experiments show that spider silk
fibers can be changed to have levofloxacin (Which is used to treat bacterial infections). The
reason I have chosen this topic is because for one I am terrified of spiders and what really
intrigued me is that something I am afraid of, can produce something that can help people.
Imagine a soldier in war is badly injured and they are in critical condition spider silk can help in
the healing process so that soldier can get home safely to his family. This can save so many lives.
The website I choose was written by Clara Rodrguez Fernndez she is a known traveler
and researcher/ bookworm. She has done numerous research paper that are most are about
traveling. In her paper, she explains that scientists added amino acid to the spider silk to enhance
the healing/ antibiotic. The targeted audience is pretty much anyone who is interested.
The video in watched was written by Artificial Intelligence news. This video explains that
after 5 years a spider specialist and a chemist teamed up to create an antibiotic. I believe this
source is somewhat creditable simply because they have the computer talking (sounds like a
robot). The purpose for this is to inform people of what and how the Spider silk does.
I choose the American Chemical Society because it is the most well-known organizations
for chemists. This source is high creditable because it has chemist that have degrees etc. talking
about relevant topics. The audience would be pretty much anyone interested in chemistry.

The scholarly article was about how spiders silk could be changed into something
beneficial to people. The audience would be for people who like to read a lot. It talked about how
strong spider silk was and what people use it for.
The person I was going to interview but cancelled on me last minute due to meetings is
Dr. Richardson who works at Cincinnati childrens hospital and is a very busy woman that
regretfully cancelled on me. I did not have a backup person to interview since she was my #1 go
to. But she did say that she also was thinking about the spider silk that she had stumbled upon
with her peers.
