Internal Assessment (Series Test ) (2016)
Programme: BTech-Part Time
Semester: V ( July 2016 to December2016 )
Course Code and Name: 13.506 WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING
Assessment Title\ Number: SERIES TEST\ 1
1. This examination has 4 Questions in Part A and 3 questions in Part B.
2. Duration of Exam: 2 hours
3. Maximum Marks: 50

PART A (Answer all questions) ( 4 x 5 = 20 marks)

1. Determine the optimum number of Rain gauges in a catchment area from the following data:
a) Number of existing rain gauges = 8.
b) Mean annual rainfall at the gauges=1000,950,900,850,800,700,600,and 400mm.
c) Permissible error = 6%.

2. Differentiate between Kennedys theory and Laceys theory for design of canals on Alluvial soils.

3. Differentiate between Aquifers, Aquiclude, Aquifuge and Aquitard.

4. Discuss the use of Stage Discharge Curve in Irrigation Engineering.

PART B (Answer any two questions) ( 2 x 15 = 30 marks)

4. Using Laceys theory, design an irrigation channel for the following data;
Discharge= 20cumecs, silt factor= 1.

5. A well of diameter 30cm fully penetrates a confined aquifer of thickness 1.5m, when pumped at a
steady rate of 30 l.p.s., the drawdowns observed in wells at radial distances of 10m and 40m, are
1.50 and 1.0m respectively. Compute the radius of influence, the permeability, the transmissibility
and the drawdown at the well.

6. Discuss the Area-Velocity method for computation of discharge in a river.
