SyroHexaplaversionoftheSongofSongs.ThesenotesstatethatcertainHexaplaricreadingsare
identicaltotheSeptuaginttext(bdmwtshbyn,whichcanberetrovertedas o).One
wouldexpectthiso texttorefertotheHexaplaricrecension,butvariousfactorsseemtoshow
thatthiscannotalwaysbecorrect.Thispaperexamineswhethertheproblemcanbesolvedby
assumingthatthe notesdonotrefertoSyhtxt,buttoaGreekBibletextoriginatingin
catenatradition.Althoughsuchaconclusioncanbedrawnforsomereadings,aconsistentsystem
cannotbeidentified.

TheLifeofAntony(CPG2102),oneofthemostimportantmonastictextofthefirstChristian
millennium,wastranslatedintoGeezperhapsalreadyintheAksumitperiod.L.Leloirconducted
thefirstexaminationoftheEthiopicredactioninthe1980s.However,hisprecociouspassing
awaystoppedthework,sothetextremainsunedited.Thepresentstudyaimstoinvestigatethe
statusquaestionisoftheresearch,withadescriptionofthemanuscripts,anexaminationofthe
textstructureandanalysisofseveralexpressions,particularlyconfrontingtheGreekdocuments.
OnlytwelvemanuscriptscontainingtheEthiopicredactionarepresentlyidentified,dividedin
twobasicfamilies.ThestructureofthetextgenerallyagreeswiththeGreekone.Thedocumentis
anonymous,andnoclassicalattributiontoAthanasiusofAlexandriacouldbefound.Some
particularomissions(especiallythelackofchapters12and2535)inallcodices,andother
structuralvariantsprovetheircommonarchetypesource.Moreover,severalpropernamesand
specificterms(suchasAntichrist)seemtoconfirmtheGreekVorlage,whichwasperhaps
differentfromthetextusreceptus.However,otherpossibilities(anArabicsource?)stillcannotbe
excluded,andthequestioncanonlyberesolvedwiththeeditionofthetextandfuturestudies.
