RANCHI:NathuramGodsebelievedinrebirthandwantedto"killGandhiagain"inhisnextbirth.TheconfessionbynoneotherthantheassassinofGandhi,whomade
headlinesagainaftermorethansixdecadeswhenaBJPMPdescribedhimasa"patriot"andaHindubodyallegedlyperformedaceremonyinMeerutforconstructionof
a"templededicatedtoGodse",wasrevealedbyaformerCIDsleuth.

BabuHariharSingh(96)hadatrystwithhistorywhenhebecamepartofthesixmemberinvestigatingteamthatquizzedGodseafterGandhi'sassassinationonJanuary
30,1948.Singh,whoretiredasASPinerstwhileBiharin1977,isperhapstheonlysurvivorwhohadseenbothGandhiandGodse.

However,oldagehasnotmadeSingh'smemoryfeebleandherememberedvividlywhatGodsehadtoldtheCIDsleuthsinMumbai'sArthurRoadJail."IamaHinduand
Ibelieveinrebirth.SinceIwillbehangedandwilldieanuntimelydeath,ImayremainasaspirittillIamreborn.IpraytogodthatIamrebornwithGandhisothatIcan
killhimagain,"SinghquotedGodseassayingduringinterrogation.

Theinvestigatingteamcomprisedtwosubinspectors,oneassistantsubinspector(Singh)andtwoconstablesandwasledbyinspectorManoharJhawhointerrogated
Godsefor45days."TherewereCIDteamsfromdifferentstateswhocampedatthemilitarybarrackinWorliandinterrogatedGodseonebyonefor45days,"hesaid,
adding,"theideatocallCIDteamsfromstateslikePunjab,Madras,CentralIndiaagencyandDelhiwastofindhislinkindifferentstates,andaccordinglytheCIDwould
workwithpoliceoftherespectivestatestoestablishthecase,"saidSingh,whostayswithhisfamilyinRanchi.

TheteamwenttoerstwhileBombayinthefirstweekofMarch1948andreturnedinmidApril."Godsehadalwaysbeencooperativewiththeinvestigators.Fair
complexionedandblessedwithasmartpersonality,hehadnoremorseforhisactandwasfrankenoughtoexpresshimself,"Singhreminiscedbutrefusedtobe
judgmental.

AskedifhetriedtoknowthereasonbehindGodse'shatredforMahatmaGandhi,SinghsaidquotingGodse,"Iusedtorespecthimasasaintbecausehealwaysspokethe
truth,whichwasnoteasy,buthewasafailedpolitician."

SinghfurtherexplainedthatGandhi'sprominoritypolicies,particularlythecommunalriotsofNaokhali(nowinBangladesh),irkedGodse.Thecoconspirator,Narayan
Apte,wasalsolockedupintheArthurRoadJail.
