Assignment 1

For this assignment you are required to select a chapter from William Curtis’ book Modern Architecture Since
1900, third edition (1996). Choose three keywords from the chapter and write 500 words on each word
covering:
• Meaning of the word and its general usage, i.e. its meaning in a broad cultural context
• Architectural usage, i.e. its meaning in the context of the chapter
• Its importance in the argument put forward in the chapter
• The history of the word. Not necessarily the etymology of the word, but the way it has been used and
has acquired its particular associations
• Buildings the word is associated with. This should include illustrations or diagrams showing
characteristics of the buildings that are associated with the word.

Copies of a selection of chapters from Modern Architecture Since 1900 are available within the course
Moodle site. The bibliographic citation for the third edition of this book is: Curtis, William. Modern Architecture
Since 1900. Third edition. New York and London: Phaidon Press, 1996.

There are three supplementary sources that are useful for this assignment:
• Forty, Adrian. Words and Buildings: A Vocabulary of Modern Architecture. New York: Thames and
Hudson, 2000. (Digital version available via UNSW Library.)
• Janson, Alban and Florian Tigges. Fundamental Concepts of Architecture: The Vocabulary of Spatial
Situations. Basel: Birkhäuser, 2014. (Digital version available via UNSW Library.)
• Williams, Raymond. Keywords: A Vocabulary of Culture and Society. London: Fontana, 1983.
(Digital version available via UNSW Library. This book consists of a collection of words that have
been expanded on by Williams. It may give you some idea of how to expand on words, but make
sure you cover the points above in your own assignment.)
