It has long been a controversial topic of whether grades should be the criteria to assess students
learning ability. While several individuals argue that the grading assessments might diminish
students performance, others believe that they can foster ones learning spirit. In my opinion,
First and foremost, by providing them with goal-setting skill, grades stimulate learners. In the
grading systems, different grades will represent different standards. For example, on the 10-
point grading scale, 5 over 10 on a test can be considered average, 7,8 is conceived as quite
good and 9,10 is excellent. From the different categories, students then can have a clear view
of which levels they want to achieve. Hence, each time they accomplish their targets, students
will feel satisfied and are motivated to reach the next level of learning.
Second of all, the grading systems evaluate students entire performances, hence trigger their
enthusiasm for improving themselves. Instead of depending on the only big pass or fail
examination at the end of the year, students conducts are measured by the whole procedures.
Therefore, not only students abilities but also their efforts are taken into account. As a result,
students will strive to overcome their own barriers to improve their study.
Opponents of the systems claim that the constant competitiveness that grades ignite can put
students under pressure, thus affect their focus on studying. However, it is undeniable that
competition can advance ones performance. As students want to prove their competence and
surpass their peers, they are motivated to work industriously and even strive to exceed their
normal limits. As a consequence, students can learn considerably more than they have expected.
In conclusion, although grades have been considered to be a pressure on students, its efficiency
cannot be ignored. It is advisable for schools to implement different marking methods to elevate
