East Greenwich School District

Music Department

Rap Project
Goals:
1. Students will communicate their opinions and ideas about a certain theme
or topic in performance for the class.
2. Students will have the opportunity to perform their rap for the class.

Directions:
A rap is poetry spoken in rhythm. They have a beat and a lot of rhyming.
Students are evaluated on the following elements of a rap: strong delivery,
persuasive elements, rap/musical creativity, and content.

Choose a topic and learn as much as you can about it. You have to know enough
about your topic to rap about it. You can choose school, friends, and family, but it MUST
always be in a positive and school appropriate topics. Common topics include school,
friends, family, hobbies, pets, etc.

Create a rap with three to four verses (depending on how many members are in
your group) with repeating choruses. Each verse should have fours lines to it that rhyme
in couplets. Couplets are made up of two lines that rhyme with each other.
Example:
I like basketball. I think its neat
It makes me want to walk to a different beat.
Dribble the ball down the court.
I think I am playing the right sport.

Every member of your group will perform one verse by themselves while
everyone will perform the chorus together. Should you add dance moves is up to you,
and might increase your creativity score.
This project will last three weeks (including today). Here is how the schedule will
go:
Week One: Review criteria, form groups, begin coming up with well known topics
and write the chorus of your raps.
Week Two: Finish writing the song, write a final copy for the teacher, practice in
preparation for performance.
Week Three: Performance
