Explore and experiment mixing primary colours to create secondary colours.

Look at and discuss the colours created in the work of other children and their own
work.

Resources/Materials/Equipment: Online colours book, magic bottles, paper, paint,


paintbrushes, paint trays, paper.

Introduction:
To begin the lesson, the teacher will read the Colour Crew book to the class showing the
books on a projector etc.
The children will identify each of the colours on the various pages and list objects or ideas
associated with each colour.
E.g. Yellow bananas, lemons, sunflowers etc.

Development:
The children will watch the teacher demonstrate mixing colours using the primary colour
magic bottles.
The children will discuss how each colour from the story book could be made, sharing
their ideas and the possibilities with each other.
The ideas will then be tested out to see if the colours can be made this way.
Each colour will be gone through and the children will recall how each colour is made.
The children will consider how they could use all of these colours to make a picture.
After returning to their places, the children will begin to mix each of the colours
themselves using the primary colours.
Each child will then paint a picture of choice ensuring that each colour will be used in their
painting.

Conclusion:
To conclude the lesson, the children will finish their work and place all the paintbrushes
and materials in the middle of the table.
The children will walk around the room looking at the paintings which their classmates
have created.
The children can discuss the various paintings.

The children can self-assess their own paining to see if they have used all the colours
mentioned in the book.
