Following the traumatic events on 9/11 a normally divided country came together

because the situation called for them to unite. It was a common enemy, and a dire situation that

made people forget about differences and rivals. The same lesson is shown in the movie Hunt for

the Wilderpeople. Both involved a huge problem that brought two unlikely sides joining together

thanks to the situation at hand. In the case of Hunt for the Wilderpeople a delinquent city kid,

Ricky Baker moves to the New Zealand bush. He stays with Bella (who likes Ricky) and her

husband Hec. After Bellas death Hec and Ricky go on the run from the police. The theme from

these two stories is that dire situations can bring the worst of enemies together. Hec resents

Ricky in the beginning, but Hec and Ricky begin working together and building a relationship,

and they become good friends in the end.

At the start of the movie, Hec resents Ricky and they usually avoid each other. In Rickys

first interaction with Hec, Ricky asks if theres anything he can do for Hec. Hec replies, Yeah

you can leave me alone. This is the only thing the viewer sees between Hec and Ricky in the

exposition. This quote shows that Hec obviously wants nothing to do with Ricky. This is their

relationship up until Bella dies. Later in the movie Hec tells Ricky that he wasnt the one who

wanted Ricky and that Bella (whos now dead) was the only reason that Ricky and Hec are stuck

together. Hec doesnt hesitate to show that he wants nothing to do with Ricky. Also, until Hec

breaks his foot he acts very cold and distant to Ricky. They never talk or communicate. Until

they get stuck in the woods after Hec suffers an injury.

After that, Hec and Ricky begin working together and building a relationship. Once Hec

has fractured his foot in the bush he and Ricky are forced to band together in order to survive.

When this happens they have no choice but to begin cooperating. They need to survive in the

woods for weeks, so they are forced to communicate. Once the police start their manhunt the two
renegades start to enjoy each other's company. They start building a friendship as they respect

each others skills and begin to find common ground amongst each other. This all culminates into

a strong friendship in the end.

After they end their time running from the police Ricky and Hec become good friends,

and they keep growing their relationship. When Hec is living at a halfway house after being

released from prison (wrongly charged with the kidnapping of Ricky Baker) Ricky comes to visit

him with his new foster family (they live in the bush). He asks Hec if he can come live with him.

Hec accepts which means that Ricky has essentially asked Hec to join his new family. Showing

that theyve created a relationship that resembles a father-son like relationship.

In addition to the events of 9/11 this theme is proven time and time again in wars. Wars

split people apart but they also bring two unlikely sides together and form bonds that may just

last forever. In the end Hec and Ricky created a strong friendship after being thrown into a

tedious situation. They hate each other in the beginning, but after an injury Hec and Ricky are

forced to work together, and they create an unbreakable friendship. The most dire of situations

truly can bring the worst of enemies together.
