Theme: Be a Recycling Super HeroReimagine Trash to

Treasure

Attention K through 5th grade Teachers!


Kent County Department of Public Works is once again organizing the 2017 Earth
Day Challenge. The students will be challenged to create a piece of artwork using
recyclable and non-recyclable items, BUT with a new twist for 2017! This year,
there is a theme to guide the creative process! Students are challenged to Be a
Recycling HeroReimagine Trash to Treasure! The rules and sign up information
are all listed on the back. After you sign up, more details will be emailed to you
and you may begin immediately.

Rules:
1. Artists must be in K5th grade (parents may not create or build, only supervise)

2. Artists may work in groups of 1-3 students

3. Artwork may not be larger than 2x2x2

4. Artwork must include a water bottle and at least one additional recyclable and non-
recyclable item

5. One entry per school

6. Entries must be submitted to the Recycling and Education Center (977 Wealthy St. SW,
Grand Rapids) by March 31st at 5:00 PM

7. Entries must be submitted with an official entry form (emailed upon registration)

Prizes
1st placeTrophy for the school and each student will receive a 1st place certificate along
with a year-long family membership to their choice of John Ball Zoo, Grand Rapids Childrens
Museum, or Grand Rapids Public Museum

2nd placeSmall trophy for the school and each student will receive individual certificates

3rd placeRibbon to display at school and each student will receive individual certificates

All participants and their families are invited to an open house


Earth Day Celebration at the Recycling and Education Center on
Saturday, April 22nd from 10 AM-2 PM.
