Ask anyone in Taiping and they will certainly attest to the fact that Taiping is indeed a
peaceful town. The name Tai-ping itself means Eternal Peace in Chinese. This is also the
reason why people refer to it as a pensioners paradise. Taipings many wonderful charms
have attracted people from all walks of life. People who have lived here all their lives would
willingly and happily retire here in this small and quiet town, rather than in any other town or
city.

Taiping is located in Perak, less than an hour away from Ipoh and Penang. It is nestled at the
foot of Maxwell Hill, the countrys oldest hill resort, making it the wettest town in Malaysia.
Folks in Taiping will tell you it rains every evening in Taiping. People even bet on the exact
time it will rain everyday! Due to the rain, the weather in Taiping is always cool, making it an
ideal place to stay.

Besides the weather, Taiping is also well-known as the town with many firsts. It has the first
railway line, built in 1885, linking Taiping to Port Weld. Back in those days, Taiping was rich
in tin and the railway line was built to send tin ore to the port to be exported. Taiping also
boasts having the first zoo, first prison and the first museum in the country.

People come to Taiping today also to savour its delicious hawker fare. For a mere RM2.50
you can get a steaming bowl of tasty curry mee. Of course you would need to know where to
go. Many of the hawker stalls are not housed in one hawker centre but are all over town. The
best popiah, the locals say, is in the back lane behind an old cinema. For the best Siamese
laksa is found in a corner house of a small housing estate. Your best bet would be hook up
with the locals and let them take you around. You will be in for a treat of some of the best
hawker food you have ever tried.

Being a small town with lots of greenery, Taiping exudes its own charm. People are attracted
by, among others, its weather, history and food. Such features which, are peculiar to this town
of peace, have drawn both locals and foreigners. Many have in fact, made Taiping their
home. If you stay long enough, you too will be attracted to it!
