ENGR 2104: Dynamics

Fall 2014
Assignment 2: Final Answers

1. The 2-kg slider S fits loosely on the inclined rod which

is spinning about the z-axis. If the coefficient of friction is
= 0.2, and the slider is located 0.25 m from A, determine
the minimum constant angular velocity such that the slider
does not slip down the rod.

Ans.
V=0.9688 m/s, w=4.84 rad/s

2. The small sphere of mass m is suspended initially at rest

by the two wires. If one wire is suddenly cut, determine
the ratio of the tension in the remaining wire immediately
after the other wire is cut to the initial equilibrium tension.

3. The two blocks shown are originally at rest. If the

pulleys are massless and frictionless, and assuming that
the coefficient of friction between block A and the
horizontal surface is = 0.20, determine (a) the
acceleration of each block, and (b) the tension in the cable.
Ans.
(a) aA=0.698 m/s2, aB=0.233 m/s2
(b) T=79.8 N
4. Calculate the necessary rotational speed
N for the aerial ride in an amusement park
in order that the arms of the gondolas will
assume an angle = 60 with the vertical.
Neglect the mass of the arms to which the
gondolas are attached and treat each
gondola as a particle.

Ans.
V=14.07 m/s w=1.2072 rad/s

5. The small object is placed on the inner surface of

the conical dish at the radius shown. If the coefficient
of friction between the object and the conical surface
if 0.30, find the maximum angular velocity about
the vertical axis such that the block does not slip on
the dish.

Ans.
=7.2 rad/s

6. Three blocks m1, m2 and m3 are positioned

as shown and a force F is applied on m1. If m2
the coefficient of friction between any two
surfaces is , determine: F
a) the maximum force F which can be m1
applied without m2 slipping over m1. m3
b) the contact force between m1 and m3.

Ans.
(a) = 2(1 + 2 + 3 ) N
(b) = 23 N
7. If the coefficient of friction
between the 20-kg block A and the
100-kg block B is 0.5, determine
the acceleration of each block for
(a) P = 60 N
(b) P = 40 N

Ans.
(a) aA=1.095 m/s2, aB=0.981 m/s2
(b) The two blocks move together with a=0.67 m/s2
