(Normal and Tangential) 3/48. A 0.

8-kg slider is propelled upward at A along

the fixed curved bar which lies in a vertical plane. If the slider is observed to
have a speed of 4 m/s as it passes position B, determine, (a) the magnitude
N of the force exerted by the fixed rod on the slider and (b) the rate at which
the speed of the slider is increasing. Assume that friction is negligible.

Given:

m= 0.8-kg

v= 4 m/s

Solution
(a) FN = maN
2
4
N + mgcos(30) = maN ; aN = 0.6

16
N= [ (-0.8) (9.81) cos 30 ] + (0.8) ( 0.6 )

N= 14.54 N

(b) Ft = mat

mat = -mg sin 30

at = -4.905 m/s2

(Curvilinear) 3/47. The small 0.6-kg block slides with a small amount of
friction on the circular path of radius 3 m in the vertical plane. If the speed of
the block is 5 m/s as it passes point A and 4 m/s as it passes point B,
determine the normal force exerted on the block by the surface at each of
these two locations.

Given:

v= 5 m/s and 4 m/s

m = 0.6-kg

r= 3m
= 0 ,30

Solution:

(mv2) /r = N mg cos
2
5
NA = (0.6) ( 3 ) + (0.6) (9.81) cos 0 = 10.89 N

2
4
Nb = (0.6) ( 3 )+(0.6) (9.81) cos 30 = 8.30 N

(Curvilinear) 3/54. The member OA rotates about a horizontal axis through O

with a constant counterclockwise velocity = 3 rad/sec. As it passes the
position = 0, a small block of mass m is placed on it at a radial distance r =
450 mm. If the block is observed to slip at = 50 deg, determine the
coefficient of static friction s between the block and the member.

Given:

= 3 rad/sec

r= 450 mm

= 0, 50

Solution:
sN + mg sin = mr2

N mg cos = mr ; where = 0

N = mg cos

s = (m/N) (g sin r2 )

= (gsin r2 ) /(gcos )

= tan (r2 )/ (g cos )

=tan 50 [(450/1000)(32 )]/ ( 9.81 cos 50)

s= 0.5495
