a) 0.814
b) 0.27
c) 1.5

z is the acceleration of a crate if two movers apply
85.0 N and 52.5 N force respectively, and a frictional force

mass of the crate is 175 kg.
a) 0.613 m/

b) 0.526 m/
c) 1.90 m/
d) 0 m/

 6) A 400-gram package lying on a horizontal surface is

attached to a horizontal string which passes over a smooth
pulley. When a mass of 200 grams is attached to the other
end of the string, the package is on the point of moving. Find
the coefficient of friction.
z Answer:

 Since the vertical forces are in equilibrium, R = 0.4 *

9.8=3.92 N
 On the point of moving, F = μR = μ 3.92 and F = T

 As the pulley is smooth, the tension in the string, T =

0.2*9.8=1.96 N
 This gives μ 3.92 = 1.96 and so μ = 1.96/3.92 =1/2

 7) A thief forgot to bring a safe cracking kit or dolly so is trying

to drag a 200 kg safe up a ramp at an angle of θ=20°. The
safe is currently not moving while he pulls on the rope with a
force of 400 N. What is the magnitude and direction of the
force of friction on the safe? (use g=10 m/s2)
z
Answer:

F=T-mg sin θ
F=400N-200kg*10m/s^2*sin(20)=-284N
It is in the opposite direction

 8) A car is taking a corner with radius of 100 m at a speed of

56 mph (25 m/s). On dry pavement the rubber/asphalt
coefficient of static friction is 0.8. Will the car hold the line or
start skidding?
z
Answer:
 F=ma

 A=V^2/r

 F=mv^2/r = m*(25 m/s)^2 /100= m*6.25 m/s^2

(max friction force)
 F max= M * R =M*mg=0.8*m*9.8m/s^2=m*7.84 m/s^2
(actual friction force needed)
 So, f is smaller than MR and therefore the car will hold
the corner
z

 9) The blocks shown in Fig. P-509 are connected by flexible,

inextensible cords passing over frictionless pulleys. At A the
coefficients of friction are μs = 0.30 and μk = 0.20 while at B
they are μs = 0.40 and μk = 0.30. Compute the magnitude
and direction of the friction force acting on each block.
Answer:
z

Neglecting friction

TA=3000sinθ=3000(3/5)TA
TA=1800 N
TB=2000sin α=2000(4/5)
TB=1600 N
2TA is greater than TB, thus, the system will move
to the left if contact surfaces are frictionless.
z

Considering friction
 NA=3000cosθ=3000(4/5)=2400 N

 fA=0.30NA=0.30(2400)=720 N

 TA=3000sinθ−fA=3000(3/5)−720=1080 N 2TA=2160 N
NB=2000cosα=2000(3/5)=1200N
z

fB=0.40NB=0.40(1200)=480 N
TB=2000sin α+f B=2000(45)+480=2080 N
 TB < 2TA. TB is insufficient to hold the system in static
equilibrium, thus, the blocks are moving to the left.
 fA=0.20N A=0.20(2400)=480 N
 fB=0.30NB=0.30(1200)=360 N
 B=0.30(1200)=360 N
z

 10)Find the least value of P required to cause the

system of blocks shown in Fig. P-511 to have
impending motion to the left. The coefficient of
friction under each block is 0.20.
