Ms. Marstens Classroom Newsletter

What We Did, Whats Coming Up:

Language Arts:
Writing: We read the book I Went Walking by Sue Williams and began to write
about things we can see in the classroom! We found something in the classroom and
took a closer look at it to see all its details. We worked on forming sentences and even writing more than one sentence to
include many details. Our sight word focus was SEE.
Sight words: a, and, be, brown, black, blue, dad, green, he, her, his, I, in, is, love, like, me, mom, my, no, orange, of, on,
purple, pink, red, see, to, the, that, white, with, yellow, and yes.
Math:
This week our focus has been story problems with addition. We have been playing lots of games that have us adding two
numbers together using different strategies (counting on, using manipulatives, using our hands, etc.). We will be adding
numbers with sums of 10 and subtracting numbers with a difference of 10 for the rest of the 3 rd quarter.

Science:
In science this past week, we used our knowledge of the types of weather (snowy, windy, sunny, rainy, and partly cloudy)
to create murals in small groups. We made thermometers to practice reading the top of the red line to decide if it is
cold/warm/hot. On Wednesday, we created and tested out our leprechaun traps. It took a lot of critical thinking, trials and
errors, and patience to get our traps to work! Unfortunately, the leprechaun managed to escape!

Social Studies:
We compared and contrasted globes and maps. We saw that maps are flat while globes are round and sometimes have
a texture to it to show landforms. When looking at maps it is like we are flying above and looking down like birds (birds eye
view). Maps and globes are smaller than places actually are. Next week we will talk more about the types of water and
land features, that maps can show locations referenced in stories and real life, and begin to make model maps of our
classroom and bedrooms!
