You have 50 minutes to complete this test. If you run out of time
you are more than welcome to come back at lunch to complete. If
you finish the this before class is finished, please work on the
Sudoku on the back.

Please read the instructions carefully and raise your hand if you
have a clarification question.

Fill in the Blanks:

Fill in the blanks with a number that makes the statement true.
[Each is worth one mark]

1.) 469.16 + 187.86__ = 657.02

2.) 24.31 32.13___= 7.82

3.) 0.7 x 0.9__ = 0.63

4.) 4.6 23.46_ = 5.1

Multiple Choice:

Circle the correct answer (a, b, c, or d).

[Each is worth one mark]

5.) Five students are holding hands to make the longest

line they can. Their arm spans are 1.59 m, 1.60m, 1.41 m,
and 1.54 m. How long is their line?
A. 6.14 m
B. 6.04 m
C. 4.14 m
D. 4.04 m

6.) How many 0.35L glasses can you fill with a 1.75 L bottle
of water?
A. 5
B. 4.5
C. 4
D. 0.5
Correct the Error:
The following questions have errors in them. Read them closely
and identify the error.
7.) 5.6 x 5.6 + 5 4.2 2
= 31.36 + 5 4.2 2
= 36.36 4.2 2
= 32.16 2
= 16.08
a.) Explain the error in the solution. [1 Mark]

Problem was they did not follow the order of operations

they went left to right instead.

b.) Calculate the correct answer. [1 Mark]

5.6 x 5.6 + 5 4.2 2
= 31.36 + 5 4.2 2
= 31.36 + 5 2.1
= 36.6 2.1
= 34.5

8.) Josh made an error when translating from words to a

numerical expression.
Word Expression Numerical Expression
Multiply 6.2 by 2, add 5.8 to this 6.2 x 2 + 5.8 2
number, and divide the sum by 2.

a.) Explain how Joshs the word expression and the

numerical expressions are different. [1 mark]
The numerical expression goes in order of the word
expression. This is not the case because of the order of
operations.

b.) How can you change the numerical expression to match

the word expression? [1 mark]
((6.2 x 2) + 5.8) 2
c.) Evaluate the word expression. [1 mark]
((6.2 x 2) + 5.8) 2
= ((12.4) + 5.8) 2
= (18.2) 2
= 9.1
Short Answer: Clearly show your work and justify your answers
using words for the following questions:

9.)

a.) Create a question that this diagram can be used for. [ 1

mark for relevance, 1 mark for a clear explanation]

This is a diagram of a lawn with a pond in a middle of it. Find

the area of the lawn.

b.) Answer your question. [1 mark show your work, 1 mark

for correct answer]

A = (LB X WB)- (LS x WS)

A = (6.7cm x10.4cm) (5.3 cm x 1.9 cm)
A = (69.68 cm) (10.07 cm)
A = 59.61 cm2
10.) An elevator can hold 650 kg. Three people moving a
piano have masses of 92.6 kg, 53.7 kg, and 89.8 kg. The
piano has a mass of 403.5 kg. Will the elevator hold all the
people and the piano? Explain why. [ 1 Mark for correct
calculations, 1 mark for explanation]

92.6 kg + 53. 7 kg + 89.8 kg = 236.1 kg < 650.0 kg

Therefore, the elevator will hold all of them.

11.) A single bus fare costs $1.75. A month pass costs
$37.75.
a.) Tom estimates that he will ride the bus 25 times this
month. Should he buy a month pass? Explain. How much
money would he lose or save?
[ 2 Mark for correct calculations, 2 mark for explanations
to both questions]

25 x $1.75 = $43.75 > $37.75

Therefore, he should buy a month pass.
$43.75 - $37.75 = $6
Therefore, he would save $6.

b.) Rahul estimates that he will ride the bus 18 times this
month. Should he buy a monthly pass? Explain. How much
money would he lose or save
[ 2 Mark for correct calculations, 2 mark for explanations
to both questions]

18 x $1.75 = $31.50 < $37.75

Therefore, he should not buy the month pass.
$37.75 - $31.50 = $6.25
Therefore, he would lose $6.25 if he bought the month
pass.

12.) Susan earned $191.25 last week. She was paid $8.50 for
each hour. How many hours did she work? [1 mark for
calculation, 1 mark for explanation]
