Product Proposal

My final product will be a series of case studies that exemplify the process a psychiatrist
goes through in daily, weekly, and monthly endeavors with patients. I hope to use this to my
advantage to allow insight into the methods and behavioral cues a psychiatrist uses and looks for
in patients so that aspiring psychiatrists can have a better handle on how to train themselves for
the profession.
To start my case studies, I will be documenting initial assessments of new patients
entering Dr. Arauzos office. If the patient is willing to allow me to sit in on the session, Dr.
Arauzo will allow me to listen to the questions he asks them, follow up on any questions I may
have, see the importance of a genogram, and afterwards confer with him any behavioral aspects I
caught on to and what they mean.
For the case studies, Dr. Arauzo will pick a patient that he has treated and is continuing to
treat and will describe to me the symptoms they expressed, how they responded to treatment (if
any was necessary), their background and story behind the development of their disorder, and
any key behavioral cues he picked up on that helped him to make the proper diagnosis.
Each case study will include a depression scale test that I will complete myself based off
of the information Dr. Arauzo gives me. He will also check my test to confirm that I analyzed the
patients mental state correctly and compare my test with his. Along with this test, I will
construct a genogram for each patient and analyze how family factors could affect said patients
condition.
The only materials needed for this project are the knowledge of the patients stories
which will be provided by Dr. Arauzo and put into a story like format. Accompanying the case
studies, I will be graphing the genograms on cardstock paper, which can be found in hobby
lobby, and I will make copies of the depression rating scale, also given to me by Dr. Arauzo.
Since one of the most important parts of being a psychiatrist is being accurate and
thorough in the treatment of a patient, I feel as though my compilation of information could truly
benefit an upcoming psychiatric student to help see real life behavioral cues that demonstrate the
textbook side effects they will be memorizing in medical school and college. I hope to complete
this project with such thoroughness that I can use it to my advantage in my future schooling to
help me understand real life portrayals of symptoms.
I am also hoping that this case study booklet will teach me more about an actual session
with a mentor. Dr. Arauzo describes each patient with such detail and instructions on how he
reacts and what should be done that I feel as though I am with my patient myself. I am hoping
that this will help jumpstart my knowledge and passion in this career.
