AGRICULTURE
Orillia is surrounded by productive farmland. The soil capability in the area has been primarily identified
as Class 2 by the Government of Canada. The deep soils have good water-holding capacity, can be
managed with little difficulty and are moderately high to high in productivity for a fairly wide range of
crops. The dominant products of the area are dairy products, mixed livestock and livestock products,
vegetables and mixed grains such as oats, wheat, barley, corn and soybean.
MINERALS
The Orillia area has deposits of sand, gravel, clay and limestone. There are several limestone quarries
in the area. A major quarry is located at Uhthoff, a few miles north of Orillia. There are two other
locations east of Orillia near Brechin. The sand and gravel pits of the area are located on moraines and
beaches in the surrounding district.
FORESTRY
The Government of Canada has acknowledge the area as one having only slight limitations to the
growth of commercial forest. The Simcoe County Forest is the largest forest tract in Ontario with more
than 31,000 acres. These tracts provide environmental, economic and social benefits to the County in
addition to countless kilometers of recreation trails. Although wood no longer plays a dominant role in
the Orillia economy a number of sawmills and wood oriented industries still exist in the area.

Distribution Corporation and the Orillia Power Generation Corporation pursuant to Section 142 of the
Electricity Act, 1998 (Ontario) and Section 71 and 73 of the Ontario Energy Board Act, 1998 (Ontario).

BACKGROUND
Originally established in 1913 under the name Orillia Water, Light & Power Commission, it was
responsible for providing electrical power to its subscribers within the concept of power at cost. 70%
of the electrical power distributed by the OWL&P was bought from Ontario Hydro. Three hydraulic
generation stations owned by the utility generate the rest. One is located on the Severn River at Swift
Rapids, one within the municipal limits of Bracebridge and the third on the outskirts of Minden. In 1998
the OWL&P installed a state-of-the-art fibre-optic data communications infrastructure.
