Word processing is the phrase used to describe using a computer to create, edit, and

print documents. Of all computer applications, word processing is the most common. To
perform word processing, you need a computer, a special program called a word processor,
and a printer. A word processor enables you to create a document, store it electronically on
a disk, display it on a screen, modify it by entering commands and characters from
the keyboard, and print it on a printer.

PARTS OF MS WORD 2013

Quick Access Toolbar It is located at the upper left corner of the screen.
It consists of the different buttons or commands that are frequently used such as save, undo and redo.

Title Bar It consist of the title or filename of the current document.

Window Control Buttons


It is located at the upper right corner of the screen. It consists of the Close, Restore down, and Minimize or Maximize buttons.

Ribbon Tabs It is also known as Menu Bar. It is located below the Title Bar
It consist of the different menus or tabs such as File, Home, Insert, Design and others.

Ribbon
It is located below the Ribbon Tabs or Menu Bar. It consist of the different commands or buttons used in working with the
document.

Help Button This is used to seek help or serves as a guide on how to work with your document.

Ruler This serves as a guide in indenting the text in your document or in setting the margins in it.

View Ruler Button It is a button that is used to view the horizontal and vertical rulers in the document.

Cursor This is the blinking object in the text area. It is where the text you typed appears.

Text Area It is where you type your text.

Scroll Bars It is used to navigate your document.

Document Information
It displays the information of your current document such as the number of pages and number of words.

Status Bar It displays the status of the current document.

Browse ButtonsIt has the same function with the scroll bars which is used to navigate your document.

View Buttons
This lets you display your document into different views such as Print Layout View, Draft View, Web Layout View, Reading
Layout View and Outline View.

Zoom Tools This lets you view your document into a bigger or smaller views.

The Keyboard
Keys and their Use

Esc (Escape)Key
It is located on the top-left of a computer keyboard that allows a user to cancel or abort operations.
Enter Key It is used to start a new paragraph in your document. It moves the cursor to the next
line.

Shift Key
It lets you capitalize a single letter or even a word. It also lets you insert the second character in
some of the keyboard keys like : < > ? and others.

Caps Lock Key It is more convenient to use if you have more than one letter that needs to
capitalize.

Backspace Key It erases one character to the left of the cursor in a document.

Delete Key It erases the character next to the cursor.

Tab Key
Usually about five spaces wide, it is an indentation at the beginning of a line of text to signify a new
paragraph in a document or to help create equal spacing between multiple lines.

Home Key It move the cursor to the beginning of the line.

End Key It move the cursor at the end of the line.

Page Up Key It moves the cursor one page up.

Page Down Key It moves the cursor one page down.

Arrow Keys It moves the cursor one character or one line to the direction of the arrow.

Space Bar
The long narrow bar at the front of a computer keyboard that
you press to make a space between words when you are typing.

NumLock Key It is a key that lets you activate the numeric key pad that lets you type
numbers using it.

Shortcut Keys It is a combination of keyboard keys equivalent to a certain command for a


faster formatting or action.

Ctrl + R - Right Alignment
Ctrl + L - Left Alignment
Ctrl + E - Center Alignment
Ctrl + Z - Undo last action
Ctrl + Y - Redo last action
Ctrl + C - Copy
Ctrl + V - Paste
Ctrl + X - Cut
Ctrl + ] - Increase Font Size
Ctrl + [ - Decrease Font Size
Ctrl + F - Find
Ctrl + H - Find and Replace
Shift + End - (When cursor is at the beginning of the line)
Select the entire content of the current line.
Shift + Home - (When cursor is at the end of the line)
Select the entire content of the current line.
Shift + Right Arrow Key- Select one character to the right of the cursor.
Shift + Left Arrow Key- Select one character to the left of the cursor.
Shift + Up Arrow Key-Select one line up.
Shift + Down Arrow Key- Select one line down.
CTRL + Shift + Right Arrow Key- Select one word to the right of the cursor.
CTRL + Shift + Left Arrow Key- Select one word to the left of the cursor.
CTRL + Shift + Up Arrow Key - Select one paragraph up.
CTRL + Shift + Down Arrow Key- Select one paragraph down.
