The domain of India according to bhskararya-makhndra
bhskararya was one of the greatest mantravdin-s of all times, who perhaps was only rivaled by the illustrious abhinavagupta or aghoraiva deika, who in times closer t o our own was verily like how a brhmaa sage of the time of the veda might have bee n. He shone like a luminary on the north bank of the Kaveri illuminating many stra -s including the k and atharvaa ruti-s, navanyya outside the vaga country and above a ll the rkula. In the introduction to his rkula work varivasy-rahasya he says: prca kmarpd druhia-suta-nada-plvitd pratco gndhrt sindhu-sndrd-raghuvara-caritd ca setor avca kedrd udcas tuhina-gahanata santi vidvat-samj ye ye tn ea yatna sukhayatu samajn kaca mat kartum e The learned assemblies, which indeed are from kmarpa in the east which is flooded by the riverine son of druhia (i.e. brahm) to gndhra in the west which is moistened by the Indus system, from the bridge in the south, by which the foremost of the raghu-s traveled, to the kedra in the north laden heavy with snow, may this effor t gratify them; who would wish to please the lay-folk by this work of mine? Indeed this clearly expresses the extent of India as the domain of the santana-dh arma. The marh patrons of bhskararya had placed the saffron Hindu flag on the fort of Attock. He had himself witnessed closely the marh campaigns against the Portuguese in the Konkan when he was writing his magnum opus the setu-bandha. Thus, there was a brief period of hope that indeed the idea of bjrv-I, of the complete liberati on of bhratavara, might become reality. It was perhaps the vision engendered by th is hope that inspired the words of bhskararya. Sadly, the marh-s stumbled and the ext ent of bhrata today has contracted and threatens to contract even more. Not surpr isingly more than half the treatises written by bhskararya have been lost. But les t Hindus forget, they must keep in mind that this was the bhratavara that their pe ople had in mind even as of 250 years ago and if its civilizational memory is lo st all hopes of regaining it may also be seen as lost.
