Forms of the pratya~NgirA R^ik
Posted on March 5, 2005by mAnasa-taraMgiNI
yAm kalpayanti no arayaH krUrAm kR^ityAm vadhUm iva /
tAm brahmaNA pari nijmaH pratyak kartAram R^icchatu //

This version is seen in the R^igveda khila 4.5.1. It may be used for countering
kR^ityAs via the procedure recommended by the vidhAna of shaunaka.

yAM kalpayanti no .arayaH krurAM kR^ityAM vadhumiva /

tAM brahmaNA .apanirnudmaH pratyak kartAramR^ichChatu //

This version is seen in the paippalAda saMhitA of the atharvaveda and is used in
the kR^ityA destroying atharvanic rites and the tantric pratya~NgirA paddhatis.

yAM kalpayanti no .arayaH krurAM kR^ityAM vadhumiva /

brahmaNA .apaNirNudmaH pratyak kartAramR^ichChatu //

This version is from the largely lost jalada saMhitA of the atharvaveda and is
deployed only in certain tantric paddhatis of praty~NgirA.

It is used in practice with the insertion of bIjas thus:

oM hR^IM yAM kalpayanti no .arayaH krurAM kR^ityAM vadhumiva /
hrAM brahmaNA .apaNirNudmaH pratyak kartAramR^ichChatu hR^IM oM //

yAM kalpayanti vahatau vadhumiva vishvarUpAM hastakR^itAM chikitsvaH /

sArAdetvapa nudAM enAM //

This is the version in the shaunaka saMhitA of the atharvaveda and is in the rites
of the vaitana sutra.

The atharvans may also deploy another mighty R^ik from the same sUktaM to slay the
sender of spell with two oblations with its recitation.

bhavAsharvA vasyatAM pApakR^ite kR^ityAkRi^te / duShkR^ite vidyutaM devahetiM //

(shaunaka form)
Typically the paippalada form is used:
bhavAsharvA vasyatAM pApakR^itnave kR^ityAkRi^te / duShkR^ite vidyutaM devahetiM //

The oblations: bhavAsharvAbhyAM svAhA /namo rudrAya pashupatye svAhA
