Chemical World- Chemical Reactions and Equations

1) Recall that all matter is composed of atoms and has mass

2) Identify a range of compunds using their common names

and chemical formulae

Atoms Compounds Formulas

Sodium+Chlorine Sodium Chloride NaCl
Barium Oxygen Barium Oxide BaO
Sulfur+Aluminium Aluminium Sulfide Al2S3
Magnesium+Chlorine Magnesium MgCl2
Chloride
Potassium+Iodine Potassium Iodide KI

3) Recall the reactions of acids with metals and acids with

carbonates
Acids and Metals
Acids react with metals to produce a salt and hydrogen gas
e.g. hydrochloric acid+ magnesium---> magnesium chloride +hydrogen
gas
Acids with Carbonates
Acids react with cabonates to produce salt, water and carbon dioxide gas.
e.g. sulphuric acid+ calcium carbonate---> calcium sulfate + water +
carbon dioxide
4) Investigate a range of types of important chemical reactions
that occur in non-living systems and involve energy transfer,
including:
Neutralisation reactions
Neutralisation Reactions occur when an acid reacts with a base
Precipitation reactions
Precipitation Reactions occur when two soluble reactants combine to form
an insoluble product known as the precipitate

Decomposition
Decomposition reactions are chemical reactions where a compound is
broken down to smaller substances using heat.
Observations:
The copper carbonate turned black as it heated turning into copper
oxide
The carbon dioxide turned the water milky

Copper ---> copper +

carbon
Carbonate heat oxide
5) Construct word equations
from observations and written descriptions of the range of
chemical reactions performed above
6) Recall that new substances are formed during chemical
reactions by rearranging atoms rather than creating or
destroying them
7) Describe the effects of factors, e.g. temperature and
catalysts on the rate of some common reactions
8) Describe examples to show where advances in science
and/or emerging science and technologies significantly
affect peoples lives, including generating new career
opportunities in areas of chemical science such as
biochemistry and industrial chemistry
