SLUMP TEST
AIM:
To determine the workability of concrete by conducting the slump test.
PRINCIPLE:
Slump test is carried out to measure the consistency of concrete, which is
a measure of workability. Consistency refers to the ability of fresh concrete to
flow, without segregation of ingredients. A concrete mix with less consistency is
termed as a stiff mix whereas that with a high consistency is called a soft mix.
The major factor influencing the consistency and workability of concrete is the
water/cement ratio. Consistency tests are usually recommended for concrete
having aggregate size lower than 40 mm.
In the slump test, consistency of concrete is expressed n terms of the
slump of the concrete mix. Slump is the subsidence of concrete (measured in
millimeters) when tested using a standard procedure.
When a standard slump cone is filled with concrete and when the cone is
lifted up slowly, leaving the moulded concrete unsupported laterally, the
concrete subsides under the force of gravity to a smaller height. The decrease in
height is measured as its slump. The following figure gives the general slump
patterns.
