El Salvadors government is a
presidential representative
democratic republic. A
democratic republic elects
people based on the popular
vote intended to represent the
people. The president of El
Salvador is elected through a
general election and must
have the majority vote to be
elected into office. If there is
no majority, a second
election is held with the two
most popular candidates. A
presidential term is 5 years
and there is no re-election.

Legislative Branch
The legislature is a unicameral body, made of 84
deputies, all elected by popular vote. They serve
three year terms and can be re-elected. To be elected
you must be older than 25, be a natural born citizen,

have education, and not have had your rights taken
from you in the past five years.

The judicial branch is located in San
Salvador. It is the highest court in the country
and composed of 15 judges. The judges are
elected by the legislative branch and serve
nine year terms.
