ECUR 325 Assignment #1 Reflections

For the Assignment part of my Foundation 30 unit I decided

to have a final unit test. In mathematics application of taught

content is very important and a test that is short answer base

allows the students to show the knowledge they have of the given

material and not be marked for getting a singular answer wrong,

like they would on a multiple-choice test. Another importance of a

unit test is that is it preparing them for post-Secondary education,

as this is how university classes are evaluated. The reason I

decided to stray away from a unit project as the final assessment

OF piece of the unit is it does not always give an accurate

representation of some students skills, just like the unit test.

Something that I want to make clear that before the unit test I

would include a unit project that hits some of the outcomes. This

project could be preformed in groups and allow students that

accel more at project based assignments to get a good mark that

proves they have met the outcomes. They would then write the
Foundations 30 Unit 1 Exam (ECUR 325 Assignment #1) Tyler Read Page 11

unit test and the combination of the two marks would add to

there final mark.

To address the specific sections of the rubric that was

provided for Assignment #1 I will begin with the Lesson Planning

& Assessment Outcomes. In this unit, I am focusing on Outcomes

FM30.1 and Fm30.6. The questions that have been provided

directly related to the indicators that have been given for each of

these outcomes. On the test 9 out of the 15 questions connect to

FM30.1 with the other 6 questions connecting to FM30.6. Since

FM30.1 is a larger concept it made sense in my mind to connect

more questions to that outcome. To look at #6 on the rubric the

test I have created has no trick questions. All the questions are

straight forward and if they have achieved the FM30.1 and

FM30.6 they will be able to achieve a high mark on the test.

To consider depth and breadth of planning and skills we will

start with #14. On a test the best way to show differentiation is to

allow for work to be shown, so that students that know the

concepts easily would easily achieve the marks, but also give

students that are struggling a chance to show some work and

Foundations 30 Unit 1 Exam (ECUR 325 Assignment #1) Tyler Read Page 12

show some understanding of the concept. Another way to allow

differentiation is to make sure the unit test is not highly weighed. I

would way it as 30% of there unit grade to allow 70% to be

different assessment that would happen as an Assessment AS

learning to hit the differentiation for all the students in my class.

For #15 and #16 on the rubric this would be a combination of the

final Assessment OF learning I have created, the unit test, and the

unit project I have mentioned within this project. The Unit project

would allow the students to apply their knowledge to real life and

show how the questions on the test I have created relate to there

every day life. This would allow for a create spin on the math

being learn and a greater understanding of literacy skills in math.

Finally looking at Unit Planning it is very clear that the test is

directly related to the unit as its questions are connected to the

Saskatchewan curriculum of which the unit is based off. This is

how I believe that my Assessment OF learning connects to the

Rubric items that have been provided for this Assignment

To complete this Assessment, the students would need the

abilities to calculate simple and compound interest. Know how to

Foundations 30 Unit 1 Exam (ECUR 325 Assignment #1) Tyler Read Page 13

deal with renting, leasing and buying as well as know how to

understand and deal with investment portfolios using the

formulas provide on page 2 of the test. They would also need to

be proficient in Permutation and Computations. Along with this

knowledge Assessment AS learning pieces like Quizs, Mid-term

and Unit projects will aid in understanding the content need for

the unit test. In math, a unit test can not stand alone even though

it is the Assessment OF piece. It needs the Assessment AS

learning for the students to succeed. This is my thought with

math and is why I have created this Assessment for this

Assignment.
