Kindergarten Assessment: Kayson

Preassessment Results. Describe how the student did on the preassessment and what is
needed for further instruction
Kayson was able to sort shapes into different shapes and color, but was not able to tell me
any other way to sort them. He could name the Circle and Square, but not the Triangle.
He could name 0, 1, and 2. He called 3, 4; 4, 8; and 5, 6
He could write 1, but none of the other numbers through 5
He was able to write that there were 2 stars, but no other numbers
Kayson was able to use stickers to represent 1-3, but not 4-5
He colored the first face blue and the second red
Kayson was able to compare all groups of objects
While I was assessing Kayson, I could tell that he was not in the best mood, which I feel
may have affected his test results.
Mini-lesson. Provide a lesson plan for the mini-lesson with embedded assessment.
Standard K.CC.4.a. When counting objects, say the numbers in the standard order. Pair
each quantity of objects with one and only one number and each number with the correct
quantity of objects.
To work on number/quantity relationships, I used cutouts of popsicle sticks that had the
number on one piece, and the corresponding number of dots on the other. Self-checking
is provided in the way that each piece connects only to its counterpart.
There are two sets: 1-5 in blue and 6-10 in red; given separately
Results of mini-lesson. Describe how the student did in the mini-lesson including
assessment results.
Kayson was able to identify 1-3 without too much trouble. He had to count the dots on 4
and 5. He had to count the dots on each piece in the red group.
I found out two things during this mini-lesson. The first is that Kayson was still having
difficulties with identifying numerals to groups. The second was that while Kayson was
counting the dots, he was skipping dots. This means that he may have trouble with
one-to-one correspondence.
Reflection on assessment-instruction-assessment cycle. Reflect on what you learned about
the student in the cycle and what you learned about instruction cycles.
The thing that I took away most from the learning cycle is the fact that Kayson will need
further instruction based on this assessment. If I were to design another mini-lesson based
on this instruction cycle, it would be a lesson on one-to-one correspondence.
