INTRODUCTION
2. Bedding
Surface parallel to the surface of deposition, which may or
may not have a physical expression. Note that the original
attitude of the bedding plane should not be assumed to be
horizontal.
TYPES OF DISCONTINUITY (CONTINUED..)
3. Foliation
Parallel orientation of platy
minerals, or mineral banding in
metamorphic rocks.
4. Joint
Discontinuity in which there has
been no observable relative
movement. In general, joints
intersect primary surfaces such as
bedding, cleavage and schistosity. A
series of parallel joints is called a
joint set; two or more intersecting
sets produce a joint system.
TYPES OF DISCONTINUITY (CONTINUED..)
5. Cleavage
Parallel discontinuities formed in
incompetent layers in a series of beds of
varying degrees of competency are known
as cleavages. In general, the term implies
that the cleavage planes are not
controlled by mineral particles in parallel
orientation.
6. Schistosity
Foliation in schist or other coarse grained
crystalline rock due to the parallel
arrangement of mineral grains of the platy
or prismatic type, such as mica.
TYPES OF DISCONTINUITY (CONTINUED..)
7. Fracture
a discrete break in a rock which is not parallel with a
visible fabric.
The terms fracture and crack uses as synonyms for
'discontinuity' when it is felt that a more concise.
8. Fissure or gashes
Goodman (1976) distinguishes fissures as the small
fractures that can be found in specimens of rock material
that can be tested in the laboratory.
Priest (1995) : The term 'fissure' is somewhat ambiguous
and should not be used to describe any specific types of
discontinuities unless the meaning has been defined
locally.
