Thomas M. Menino, Bostons longest serving mayor, dies at 71

Boston October 30, 2014 Thomas Michael Menino, mayor of the City of Boston from
1993 to 2014, died this morning just after 9 a.m. at the age of 71 from an advanced
cancer. Mr. Menino was diagnosed in March, not long after leaving office at the
beginning of this year. A funeral procession and a private funeral will be held on
Monday, November 3rd. Cardinal Sean O'Malley will deliver a memorial Mass for former
Mayor Thomas Menino, at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on Sunday, November 2nd.
The procession will begin on Monday right before 11 a.m., beganing at Faneuil Hall and
passed City Hall, continuing by the Parkman House, Boston University, Fenway Park,
Dudley Square, Grove Hall, Franklin Park, Bowdoin, Geneva, the Mattapan Library,
Roslindale Square and then Most Precious Blood Parish in Hyde Park.
No man possessed a greater love for our city, and his dedicated life in service to
Boston and her people changed the face of the city, Mayor Martin J. Walsh said.
On October 23, 2014, he made the announcement that he would be halting cancer
treatments, as well as his book tour, to spend more time with family. Members of the
former mayors family, and Richard Gormley, a longtime close friend of Meninos and the
funeral director at William J. Gormley Funeral Service, will is handling his funeral
arrangements.
